Hey,

Wondering if any one can help.

My main PC won't connect to the router and therefore to the net. It says 'A Network Cable is Unplugged' with a red cross beside the computers down in the icons next to the clock.

The router seems to be working fine. Laptop connects to wireless and the XBox connects ok. If I take the cable out of the back of the main pc and plug it into the laptop (and disable wireless on laptop) internet connection and connection to XBox is fine, so it must be something to do with the main pc.

I just reistalled motherboard drivers and it made no difference. I'm using onboard LAN as I don't have a NIC. (Well I do but it was causing havoc long before this problem started so I pulled it out. I did try it back in there after this problem started but the pc wouldn't boot properly and was beeping at me :/)

In device manager it says the NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller is working properly. The motherboard is an Asus M2N-X.

Any ideas on what might be the problem and a possible fix.

I want to throw it out the window.

Yeah sounds like the NIC could be fried, good luck with that.

If there is damage to the pins on the NIC that connect to the network cable then it's entirely possible the network cable is unplugged.

When the cable is plugged in, do you see the port show up as active on the switch?

No, no light goes on on the router.

I've tried it in different ports. However if I take the cable out of the desktop (the one that isn't working) and plug it in the laptop the light comes on on the router and the connection works fine.

I'll check that spook, but as far as I know no settings have been touched, it just stopped working. BTW where in windows do you get that setting?

Also, try a different cable. I have had 3 cables die on me over the last 5 years.

right click on my network places, right click on your lan connection -> properties and then go down to Internet protocol TCP/IP

Well no actually. Use the following IP address is selected with a bunch of numbers in the fields, same with DNS.

I'm pretty sure I had to change this to get it working with the router, so I don't know why that would make it stop working now?

Also, try a different cable.

He already said the cable works fine on another machine.
faulty onboard nic, faulty ram, or malware

Yes because faulty ram and malware will sit back, with the sole purpose of affecting your onboard LAN with no other side-effects.

Ah you guys suck at troubleshooting.
