COMMONWEALTH Bank has identified a way to resolve a glitch that left customers missing thousands of dollars from their accounts today.

Up to 200,000 customers were affected by the error, with many waking up this morning to find their accounts overdrawn or missing large sums of money.

In an "emergency update" news item posted to the NetBank website at 2pm (AEDT), the company said it would resolve the error overnight.

"We have a current issue affecting the balance on a number of customers accounts where transactions were performed on the 22nd, 23rd, 24th of November," it said.

"We have identified a fix to this problem which will be resolved overnight."

Looks like I've ended up with an extra couple thousand in my account. Don't think I'll be touching that.

A bloke I worked with was receiving Centrelink payments, went to check his bank account and he had $1.2mil in it. He had the ATM receipt to prove it.

It was Easter holidays, so he couldn't go into the bank and do the responsible thing...withdraw it all....so instead he was limited to maxing out his withdrawal limit of $800 for three days over Easter until they found out the mistake they made.

Day 4, security guards showed up on his doorstep. Final result was that he had to pay back the $2400 that he'd managed to withdraw at the exorbitant rate of $54/fortnight. (*sarcasm*)

should have thrown it into his saver account, interest calculated daily, could have earned a few hundred there easy. just transfer it back when they ask. nothing illegal about that right?

Yeah my account is out a few grand. Not happy as in netbank I can't transfer any funds as it says I owe them a few grand. Looking at the amounts it has taken is seems transfers I have done over the last day or so out have been done multiple times.

The funny thing is my wife is going to do her shopping this afternoon and she won't be able to pay for it lol.

Hmm... I transferred some money to trading account, money appeared in the trading account but the withdrawal disappeared from my savings account. Good thing I was transferring the maximum amount possible :)

Right. But you're severely over-estimating the intelligence of this dude. Haha. He was a brain-dead druggie who survived on nought bar weed and beer. He was a chef. Pretty normal lifestyle for a lot of chefs.

Bank error in your favour: Collect $200 not in your favour: lose $500

I would just get over it. It's not like you are going to lose your money. You are going to get it back. Things like this happen. I don't think the bank has made this stuff up on purpose as it would not gain much satisfaction (just a whole lot of work). ALL computers have glitches! I spoke with netbank today and I was provided with excellent service, the lady on the phone appoligised even though it wasn't her fault. I feel so sorry for the people at the bank who have to answer the phone cos of it. I work in a call centre with a phone company so I know what it is like. Give them a break!

Yeah and computers did fix all our problems... until people started to use them and the internet came into existence.

Sucks to be you!

And no, we wont feel sorry for people having to do their jobs. Its like saying you feel sorry for the call centre workers at insurance companies for all the claim calls they get after a big storm.
