I have tried to Google this question but to no avail.

Can anyone tell me how to tune in free to air HD channels eg, Channel 10 HD?
We have a new Samsung tele and currently have Foxtel through Optus box.

I am guessing you can't get them through Foxtel without paying for Foxtel IQ or whatever, but given that the TV has a built in HD tuner do I just tune them in like a normal channel? Presumably they would need to be tuned separately to Optus/Foxtel.

Make sure you have set your TV to digital rather than analog.

If you've got foxtel and are like my parents you have no external TV antenna and won't be able to pick up the free to air HD channels. You need to install an external TV antenna on your roof (internal ones can work but usually don't unless you live really close to the transmitter). Once you have that installed or if you already have one and its plugged into your TV's antenna input just find the auto tune menu.

What's going to suck is if your foxtel was installed by an idiot who used the Rf out of the foxtel to the antenna in on your TV instead of using the a/v plugs. You can still tune them in but just plug the antenna into the passthrough thing on the back of the foxtel box if it even has one, it's been like 10 years since I looked at the back of that box.

I didn't think that you could tune in digital channels. When I first turned on my TV, all of the channels were just there, with their correct numbers. Have you tried just going to something like channel 10 and seeing what's there (or channels 1 or 12 for Ten HD)?

Hmm. Ok well there's no aerial plugged in.

I have a SCART cable that goes from Optus/Foxtel box to component cable into the back of the TV.

I assumed a built in HD tuner meant you didn't need an aerial or set top box to pick up the extra channels.

I have even read the manual and tried to tune manually and with auto but no go.

Wouldn't the HD channels be separate from Foxtel altogether?

A built in HD tuner is just that, a tuner capable of decoding hi-def broadcasts built into the TV. As with all television transmissions you still need an antenna though, since when have you ever been able to pick up 7, 9, 10, etc without one?

Foxtel/Optus cable is data sent down a cable that runs into the back of the Foxtel/Optus unit and is NOT an antenna. You're probably confused by the fact that you can get 7, 9, 10, ABC on Foxtel but actually you're not watching those channels directly. What you're seeing when you watch them through Foxtel is Foxtels re-transmission of those channels over their cable/satellite network. Your Foxtel unit isn't picking up the transmission from 7's transmitter.

Success!

The antenna did the trick. Yeah I guess I was thinking the TV had a built in antenna or something. Kinda weird having this fancy modern TV with the old rabbit ears, but it works fine. When I think about though it seems logical, of course you would need an antenna. What was also confusing me was that I had Foxtel plugged in to RF and Component, so I was getting Foxtel where I should have been getting FTA.

Thanks Whoop and Spook!

Confirm, which was kinda gay (not that I actually watched it) so I guess that movie was filmed in that format?

And yes you need an arial.

^^ What gets me is that when you watch some TV shows they're in 16:9 but when you buy them on DVD they're only in 4:3. Why the hell do they do this :( So far I've had a tv series and a couple of "made for tv" movies do this to me *shakes fist* Makes me wish I'd just downloaded them.

Anything other than original format is extremely frustrating, especially when we pay money for it. Most people these days have the ability to "zoom" if they don't like a wide screen cut - give us the original ffs!!

I hate those f***ing ads filmed in widescreen, and then broadcast in 4:3 so you get a massive black box all the way around the tv. WHATS THE f***ING POINT.

Our Mythtv isn't fast enough to let you watch HD tv live. We have to record it and wait for it to recode

^^ what the hell? Surely if it can record you should be able to watch it at the same time. Try turning off time shifting if it's on.

What are the specs of the machine?

Anyone know if Channel 10 are going ahead with their sports channel. I heard they were going to launch a 24/7 HD sports channel.
