I don't think Slater is over-rated at all. Inglis and Smith would be over-rated before him, they did s*** all last night. Yeah he made a few mistakes last night but that's not what lost us the match.

Rugby League died in this country in 1997 (super league) although the rot started well before then. Rugby Union has made huge ground since the super league trouble and since it went professional. Throw that in the mix with the huge popularity of soccer and aussie rules and there simply isn't any room for league to be anything more than what it already is.

Rugby league has tried desperately over the past 20 years to break into new areas and increase the profile of the game. With the possible exception of the Melborne storm pretty much every attempt has fallen flat.

The way I see it the NRL regular season is just try out matches for the state of origin (even though they extend past it) and the world crap is just a side show. There are only 3 games of League worht watching or even paying attention to each year and thats State of origin 1, 2 and 3. Anything outside of that is as exciting as watching the 100m sprint staged in waist deep mud.

erm... isn't league smashing union in ratings over last year or two? attendence at NRL games has been plummeting though I think.

i don't give a f***, only league worth watching is the odd broncos game (for the 1/4 or 1/2 of the season they don't f*** up) and SOO.

You're probably right. It's just the big matches I've seen recently he doesn't seem to do much especially when it's expected he will. Hence why I feel he may be overated. They crap on before the game Inglis, Inglis that but nothing ever happens :(

But as previously stated, I certainly don't watch all the games, I'm only basing this one the ones I've seen (ie: GF and WCF).

When Super League and the ARL called their PayTV truce there was going to be real changes in the game but 10 years later players are earning less than they did back then. No wonder the good players go to England for double/triple the money or they drift off to Union.

The game now is in a terrible state. We have an A grade and an under 20s comp.
thats the NRL. The skills side of the game is suffering too with the loss of players to England. Clubs nave no depth. Once their marquee player is injured the season is over. I was reading somewhere that next year there will be 100+ ex-NRL players overseas playing in Super League or Union.
The Salary Cap needs to go way up and the amount clubs needs to come way down.

Soccer AFL and Union are run far more competently than the NRL.
