Hi guys

Firstly i havent had an internet connection for almost 3 years, havent been in aus for 2 of those so im out of the loop when it comes to everything internet related. Soon i want to get a good net connection primarily for gaming secondly for downloading.

Ive been reading about ADSL 2 and Naked DSL and what id like to know is how many of you use either for gaming and did you notice a different in ping from normal ADSL?

Also which company are you with?

Im not really concerned with having a landline to use so it doesnt matter either way.

Naked just means you dont have a dial tone so you dont have to pay for phone line rental...

All i can say Internode... very reliable and great pings...

www.internode.on.net

they just released their ULTRA plan converting my plan as we speak :)

Also internode has usenet which so much better then torrents

They also have gaming servers in NSW so pings should be good!

iiNet Naked counts uploads also, which is a pain when you are torrenting.
iiNet regular doesn't!

as fireblood says, naked plans count uploads, which you have to factor in if you like to support your community and give back

if you dont care for giving back, its definately the go, saves you money and inode/iinet are pretty good and reliable

just remember when your internets go down, you got no phone to call people and complain though (other than your mobile obviously)

I've used Naked Internode in Sydney, no different to Brisbane (Naked or otherwise).

With the most popular games they have servers in QLD, NSW, WA as well. To be honest on my 1.5Mbps connection I've never really sat there and specifically picked out QLD servers since the latency to generally everywhere in .au (except WA) is pretty good and stable to begin with.

Plus they have good free radio streams, free Sourceforge server, on top of the awesome gaming network.

spook, not on internode it doesn't, only iinet. only iinet counts up and down, thats why they have better quotas for the same sort of money, to try and balance it out.

the thing that tipped me off to go to iinet was they bundle their voip service with it for free (called iitalk) and that means absolutely free untimed local and std calls. I pay $69.95 a month for Naked ADSL - 20Mb sync, 15/20gig peak/offpeak, free local and national calls.

4real!?

upstream doesnt count on teh node?

well that is interesting . .. . . .

id love to ditch my phoneline, considering i dont use the home phone evar, but iinet naked plans dont work for me because i upload 24/7

Stop giving back to the community (or use newsgroups!). But the iiNet Naked plans have more quota to compensate for the counting of uploads & downloads.

Normal plan for 69.95 - 4Gb + 6Gb
Naked plan for 69.95 - 15Gb + 20Gb

As said, Internode give you free access to Usenet, and if you prefer torrents (like me) you dont have uploads counted towards your quota.

I leave my torrents running all the time, I dont really care how much it uploads on my naked connection because it doesnt count ! :D

or you can get a naked plan like i have and pay

$60/month - and i get 30gb peak (12-12), 48gb off peak, 100 free local/national VoIP calls/month (never had a phone bill higher than 90c)

never had a problem with speed/connection/service for nearly a yr now on exetel. who also have gaming servers.

Just to clarify for people unaware, by free access he means free subscription.

It still counts towards your quota, but at least you have a high quality source now.

I just got internode naked - i get consistent dropouts at nighttimes - there's only been one night it hasn't dropped out at least 8 times

I also stuffed up not realising it doesn't work in conjunction with your existing phone line (the order page said 'phone order' but i had no 'order' with internode hence the confusion) and it overwrote our home telephone number. It's going to cost me around $500 for the mistake. Unfortunately upon revision the .pdf order form and the FAQ state this clearly but the internet ordering system has different wording which to me meant something entirely different.

I get a max download speed of about 380Kb/s and pings are as good as my telstra adsl1 was.

However the good thing is it's 25Gb download cap and uploads don't count so it's nice for torrents.

I've got iiNet naked ADSL.

I get good pings to most servers except WA, but who wants to play in WA anyway.

Generally pings are from 20-70. Most sit around 50.

I get about 600kb/s, It should be higher as I'm only 2.3 km's away from the exchange.
It is stable as, it occasionally disconnects around 9:30am for about 1 min.

As for the VOIP, I'm not sure if it is my equipment or not, but it is kinda unreliable. It drops out and sometimes it doesn't make calls only gives engaged signals, I have to give the VOIP thingy a power cycle to get it to work again.

Most drop outs are caused by modem issues and line issues...

And thats another thing im wondering about... Is it worth spending more money on a good modem to get better/consistand pings? or wouldnt it make a different? also u can use the same modems for all the different types of connections?

Is it worth spending more money on a good modem

It's best to approach the situation in terms of what modem models are known to be good and stable - you have to do some research. If that means paying more or getting one that's actually cheaper than what you had in mind, then so be it. Just getting one that's more expensive doesn't guarantee it'll be any good, so focus on specific models.

The best modems aren't always the most expensive.

There are 4 steps to having a solid ADSL2+ connection.

1) Live within a reasonable distance of your exchange http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au
2) Choose a quality ISP
3) Have a central splitter professionally installed
4) Use a modem with a good reputation for quality.

380Kb/s downloading from internode has been my max speed.

The random drop outs I have no idea how to fix short of calling them about it.

edit: not discouraging you, my only warning is make sure you don't overwrite your phone line with it - get it installed on a completely line that you don't need anything else on ><

There is something wrong with your line... or have you changed your profile on the internode website?

i am little closer then you around the 3km mark i get
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 7,5 / 19,5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 20,0 / 38,0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24,0 / 6,0
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 384 / 6.720

ATM im on Internode Plus plan (8000/384) with these settings getting around 700k/s

Its not a professional splitter... its a professionally installed Central Splitter.

They go straight after the network boundary (generally a grey Telstra box on your external wall). You generally run Cat6 from the splitter to a wall port that you will use for ADSL.

They're more important for people who are further away from the exchange, but they help pretty much anyone. Internode generally recommend that its the first thing done when trying to improve a connection's stability.

Deeper - what are your connection stats? eg. SnR/Attenuation and Sync speed. Log into your modem and check.

This is the information I wanted... Attenuation is very high. You're in a similar situation to me.

Mine is
Upstream 942000
Downstream 4399000
SNR Margin 4.5 dB / 5.5 dB
Line Attenuation 45.5 dB / 31.0 dB

I am 4.5KM from the exchange. Pretty much achieving my max connection.

What it tells me is that you're not pushing the connection too hard (are you on ADSL2+ High Reliability?) cause your SnR is reasonably good... Your line has an issue for you to be getting 55.8 attenuation. For the record, Telstra decline new connections at 56db on their network.

Personally, I'd look at a new modem... Maybe a speedtouch or something. I'd also look at getting a central splitter installed ($200ish installed by an electrician)

not sure what you mean by high reliability. I'm on an internode Naked ADSL2 plan (not naked extreme, it's not available in my 'regional area' =p)

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/808533.html

There's some reports there about others using the same modem with non telstra ISP's

Here's a quote from it:
"I plugged the unit in and having already read up to page 3 of this thread I anticipated some mild complications in using it with my Internode account. I input my username and password but seemed to be getting nowhere. After I truncated the address of the modem login back to 2wire.gateway.net it went through fine.

First impressions.........I'm actually very impressed! I've got better sync speed now then I have in the past with any other other unit I've ever tried (this list includes a NB5580W, NB5plus4W, NB9W, DG824G, DG834GV, RTA1025W, RTA1046VW and a 7401VGP-M).

Prior to the 2wire unit, my best stats were with the Netgear DG834GV.
Line sync = 5100/816 kbps.
Actual line throughput (measured against speedtest.net) = 4400/616 kbps.
Ping time (Newcastle to Sydney) = 35 - 45 ms

2wire 2701HGV-W stats:
Line sync = 5833/818 kbps (my up speed is capped at 820 as I'm on an Optus DSLAM).
Actual line throughput (measured against speedtest.net) = 4800/693 kbps.
Ping time (Newcastle to Sydney) = 33 - 45 ms

So there's clearly an improvement. Could probably get more out of the unit upon tweaking settings I expect."

Different modems deal with poor lines differently.

You have pretty much as bad a line as you can have...

Poor lines definately make a huge difference, the qld'er had old old lines with the old sockets even, and my noise was crazy, now it's pretty low and speeds = teh win

My house is 30 years old, and I can see that the oil or whatever it is that they put in the lines to stop moisture is starting to ooze out. The link between the line running down the street and the line that goes into my conduit is clearly rusted to s***, and yet Telstra "just" make the line work for voice, and don't really worry too much about actually maintaining the line, or preventing future issues.

Deeper - since you'd be on Optus, I assume there mustn't be any profile selection available. I didn't realise you weren't on Extreme.

adsl will probably be fine (especially if its a 1500/256 plan)

adsl2 is way more sensitive to distances, as per this graph!

Seriously, what is the diff between 8 or 24. It is really not that noticeable.

Unless you are warezing like a monkey you are not going to be put out.

They have unlimited over here in the US and it is much the same as over in .AU. We are at Internet parity.
