WC3 Grand Finals? They play Wing Commander 3 at WCG? That's wierd.

Ohhhh, you mean War3.

f***ing acronym thief, that game. No, don't give me this "it's more popular" bulls***, it was 6 years too late to the party.

Having been to WCG quite a few times, it still seems to be at the same level as what it was a few years ago aside from the "ohh some guys make money from computer games" there is no real interest in it.

I'm guessing that is because the world at large still can't easily watch it and understand it like watching a game of Soccer.

I came back from Europe today - when I was in Singapore a few hours ago I ran into 4 guys coming back on my flight in Team Immunity who had just been in Cologne competing (all coming back to Brisvegas), 2 CS players, a War3 player (who said he lurks on QGL, so hi if he's watching), and a Halo player.

I was going to duck over to Cologne to check it out but ran out of time to get it organised (...and frankly didn't want to make the trip just to watch CS1.6 :)

The competitive version of wc3 (other than dota) is melee. It involves building your base, hero's, and a mixture of units for your army.

4 Races: Night Elf, Human, Orc, Undead.

Hero and unit mixes are different for each matchup.

Kinda like starcraft but with hero's.. and they play a very big role with harrassment etc.

Put it on Channel 9, Channel 10. Put it on a Saturday or a Sunday but not too late as Good Game is on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Maybe they could put it on digital TV but I am not sure. Could it be a promotion for the move to digital television? Once again. Not sure.

Would be good to see this balanced up with football in Melbourne, try putting it on during the summer (considering summer television is a pretty dull period.) See how it rates.

*shrugs* Ideas? I am fresh out.

You can get a good sample at any arcade around a dance machine.

YEAH! Sure to be a ratings winner. Call up me mate David Gyngell "hey mate instead of having football on friday night.. how about we show a bunch of nerds sitting in front of a monitor?"

The notion of 'geek' is getting pretty blurry these days though.

Like i said 15/20 years who knows.. Some aussie gaming is getting TV air time in melbourne sometime soon i think.

i dunno... even as a gamer nerd i find watching other people play computer games pretty fkn boring. there are exceptions like the qgl q3 final with boba n lobby was pretty action packed n was close enought to hold my attention. the i98 (i think) quake final between reload & tim was a larf! but the thought of watching ppl play rts or rpg or roundbased fps... yawnsville imo.

There is such a huge market in esport i cant believe there hasnt been a game developed that specifically targets professionals and making it exciting for spectators.

There simply isn't a way to make it exciting, the only people who find it exciting are those who understand the technicalities involved in what's going on. Not many people get that and even then some games are just down right boring.

Python's right. I think most of the FPS games are too complicated. I used to think CTF would be the best way to do it but still couldn't figure out a way to make it easily understandable or watchable in real-time - there's too many focal points that are critical to the game. Maybe one-flag CTF would be easier or something.

I think a game that had "made for pro-gamers, by pro-gamers" on it wouldn't even sell to pro-gamers

You almost need a second rendering engine (or specific rendering mode, anyway) specifically for spectator enjoyment. Including lots of fancy camera angles and programmable zoom and pan features and whatnot. That way the player can focus on winning and the crowd can watch the nice visuals.

If you took an average sport (say soccer for example) and removed all the different camera tricks they use during a live broadcast (say they only used a single fixed camera overlooking the field) then a certain amount of visual appeal would be lost. Obviously different games have various spectator modes but they are usually afterthoughts in design and offer little in the way of features and adjustment capabilities.

In terms of game type, would maps focusing on a single control point be easier to manage? (Take and hold victory type of thing.)

There was a game being developed by the Cyberathlete Professional League and ID Software. I think it was called Severity? Ment to be designed for professional gamers with features for spectators... Dunno what happened to it because CPL died :(

Speedball 3 would've been the go.

Otherwise, I'm with Trog - CTF all the way just as long as that lame punisher.rc keeps out of it

A "professional" game wouldn't work. You need amateurs/newbs to play a game to build a following.

A comparison would be like professional shooters in the Olympics, the only people who REALLY watch them are those that are someway involved in the sport (through some form of shooting) as they really know what it takes to be accurate.

That's why games like CS are rather successful because newbs can go "YES! I've got leet skills camping in the corner and killed a guy!".

Computer games can be broadcasted very well with commentating, Americans have a nack for this and I've watched quite a few games where the commentating has been very very good and actually interesting. They've also done it with different angles/replays etc.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on who you are!) computer gaming will find it hard to ever break the mold of 'nerds playing games'. Computer games miss that human touch of being involved, all you see is a game being played out with computer elements and humans controlling it. Any sport you watch has a human being in control on the focus of the sport (ball, cricket bat, tennis racquet etc). Can you imagine watching a real soccer game with robots and having humans control those robots? That's essentially what computer games are.

The real reality is that everyone should be playing CTF!
