Hiya my QGL Brethren.

I was just out playing at the local park with my family and we got around to playing Handball.

The little fella, in Grade 3, brought up these new skool rules. I'm pretty sure they are school specific.
Adult, Children, Baby rules. Basically Adult rules: You cant speak.
Children rules: Normal rules.
Baby Rules: Can call grab, then grab the ball and throw it wherever you like. And other overpowered rules like that.

It got me wondering into the other random rules that other people have heard/played with.

So bring on the old skool rulez, come on you know you know them.

If f*** up you get punched in the face, If you fall over you get kicked in the guts, If you say something retarded you get punched in the face, If your gay you get punched in the face, If you touch the ball you get punched in the face. I'm pretty sure thats handball.

Always go for the closed-fist power shot. We also developed the low skidding kick, delivered from the arch of the foot in a grubber kick style.

Apart from that, just 'lines' and 'intos'. And the king as server.

Cherry, you could call cherry and basically do a full?

What is bridge?

I think screwball is that sort of grab thing were you basically return a mid/high ball as a really low shot through a twisting of the wrist and arm?

around the world (or til server says break)
rally to death/server says break

If you can time your shot until its just about to bounce in your court you can hit a shot that skims like a rock on a lake. it'll go like a bullet and about 5 cms off the ground.

yep

What is bridge?

bounce it in you own court then underarm hit it into someone elses

screwball: usually a serve where you spin the ball on the full into anothers court so that when bounces it goes in a random direction.

we also had rallies.

ok there is two main variants to handball (classic era circa 1994) wallball and handball.

wallball is played against a single wall, or in some cases two insersecting walls (a corner). usually played between 2 people, wallball can include more than 2 participants. the ball must be played towards the wall in a downwards motion, allowing it to hit bounce off the wall. it may then be played either on the volley or by allowing it to bounce on the ground before being played by the next player. a person wins a point by forcing the other player to not complete a legal shot.

the rule of INTOS is very similar to the interference rule in squash, except there is never a penalty against the interfering player. simply an INTOS may be called if the players whose turn to act is prevented from reaching the ball because their line off access was blocked by another player. a replay occurs.

INTOS also occurs when a foreign object enters the court or the teacher asks you to tuck your shirt in/pull socks up.

rolls is where a playing action occurs so low to the ground as to make the ball roll instead of bounce. a replay occurs.

jacks occurs when the ball hits the point between the wall and the ground simultaneously and is a replay if called.

double bounce up ball is optional but purists avoided it.

there was an interesting variation floating around from memory where in a certain circumstance a player could direct the ball towards an opponent instead of the wall and in effect "brand" them, forcing them out. i cannot fully recall this localised rule.

handball is a similar game which uses a series of squares marked on bitchumen or concrete in order to facilitate a similar form of the wallball game.

then we had bashball which was played against a very high brick wall on science building. each player must throw the ball high against the wall and the players would take turns trying to catch it on the full. if you dropped it you had to run to the wall (bar) as fast as possible or you could be bashed for approxmately 20 seconds by the group of players. there were few other rules to this neanderthal version of the game.

Wall Brandy was great.

A bunch of people stand against a wall and there is 1 thrower. He throws the ball as hard as he wants at the people against the wall. If you got hit, your out. Last one standing gets to be the next thrower.

our two main things were

grabs - you held the ball for a few seconds for noob reasons
ghostie - you knock it into someone's court on the full, gently and in an upwards fashion

if you don't actually say 'grabs' or 'ghostie' you fouled, but if you said it you were fine...

serve ace!

oh I remember another one "round the world" if you said that, then the ball had to go in a circle for the rest of the round. And there was another one where it would force the game into a duel between two people... maybe it was "duel" - can't remember..

After many years of bulls*** rules we finally went back to basics.

Lines is out + don't be a lamer, that covers pretty much everything. Regular serve, no carrying... just plain old battle.

I remember back in grade 5/6/7, certain kids would hold the Kings spot for multiple months because the rules were f***ed. "Taps, everyready, poison, moving" or some random s*** and then they peg the ball in your square.

Yer I spent the afternoon teaching him how to bend the rules in his favour.

Pretty much use the Grab rule whenever you can, couple it with cherry and then you can pretty much get anyone you wanted out.

Hopefully this will only last a small amount of time before the rules are self-regulated.

damn, I thought this was going to be about real handball.

I have people I've worked with for 5 years who still think I go off to bounce a tennis ball around every monday night :/

Back in grade 12 stinky, I forgot to turn up to sports sign on day.

The only option was handball, by myself with the other grades... I managed to convince 2 of my mates to switch from rugby.

Most fun I've ever had. Our handball coach was from the Australian side and had 2 (yes TWO) lazy eyes... I've never LOLed so hard in my entire life, it never got old.

Every session ended up in the 3 of us getting fouled off within 5 minutes for f***ing all the younger grades up.

So many falcons.

My younger kids tell me of the most bizarre rules...

If you serve/hit the ball into their square while they're eating, your out. There's a name for it, can't remember.
Indecent <-- I don't even know what that means in relation to handball, but they occasionally call it out to each other when playing. Doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe it's really crap smaq talk?
And a bunch of other wierd tules I can't think of.. Oh delegating serve, so king can give the serve to someone else if he wants, but then he's got to death rally that person or something?

yeh it was way better in year 10,11 and 12 no bulls*** rules except lines was a replay as if had always been since forever...

indecent used to be used back when i was young for if someone did a retarded unplayable serve you could call indecent to get it served again

Seems to me that handball is more about shouting out the right thing at the right time than being able to hit the ball well.

When I were a lad, it was much simpler. Full bad, doubles bad, lines were play on and you had to hit it with your hand. That was it.

hah handball at terrace went off.

I remember that we had mainly 6/8 square courts and from highest to lowest there was Ace, king, queen, jack then just other squares.

Ace, the server, had the option of serving on the full if he called it, we had lines, out on the full, poision (which is when the ball cant be hit into your square for a legit reason, grabs, powershot rallys, death rallys.

there was something about a rule called 'double over rule' but i cant remember what that was.

ah school days.

i play a game of handball with my son most days.

i find it funny all the rules he comes up with.

i especially like it when he calls 'old skool' rules then comes up with some random rule.
i'm like 'you cant do that'
he's like 'yes i can its old skool rules'
i'm all like 'yer i went to school back then champ'

i find the secret to hanball is to bulls*** your way out of any situation requiring you to go to dunce or the back of the line. they only way this is overcome is by shear weight of numbers and usually 3 or 4 frustrated handballers dragging or pushing you out of the square.

p.s. i rock at handball!
