Couldn't find mongie's thread on this so I thought I start a new one:

Mitsubishi LaserVue L65-A90: First Tech Review of LASER HDTV-HD GURU Exclusive

Very detailed review, basically if you think TL;DR then here's the summary:

To wrap up, the L-65A90 has its place among the best HDTVs in the market today. Price wise, it is comparable or less than competing size flat screen displays such as the 65” Panasonic Premiere. The HD Guru awards the Mitsubishi L65A90 its highest ♥♥♥♥ rating.

Mitsu hurry up and make them cheaper already damnit.

Nah doode, that's 7k USD... that's converted to a fair bit more in AUD. But yeah basically comparible. But I don't have a house big enough for that screen size LOL. I was looking at around 46". Hopefully they release that modle in AU for around the same price as the LCD/Plasma.

Erhm... I know you're trolling me so I'll bite:

Off-axis viewing confirmed an acceptable viewing angle of around 130 degrees horizontal with a gradual drop off in brightness as one moves from center. There was no color shift seen as one moves off center. The viewing angle compares favorably to many LCD flat panels and is far better than any of the LED backlit LCDs observed to date. Plasma is still is the king in uniform horizontal off-axis viewing. Vertical viewing brightness drops off considerably as one shifts above or below center, this is similar to many LCD flat panels, once again, plasma is the best performer in this category.

But plasma set couldn't touch this thing in any other catergory so. I think it's a win win.

The specific phenomena I was refering to is right in the paragraph you quoted...

the review i read of the 60" kuro v 65" laservue said that the only thing that the laser vue had going for it was colour reproduction and power consumption.

I concede that the technology looks great, but I could not stand a rear projection tv personally.. I just cant get over the vertical viewing angle issue.

That article I posted ticks many more boxes though, now that he had time to do a proper review.

Also may I ask, why you're worrying about vertical viewing angle? I don't understand, as most people normally watch the TV sitting down and probably straight on / on slight angle?. Nothing will be perfect but IMO this comes close.

This is as far away from perfect as you can get when it comes to viewing angle.

130 degrees is poor as it is, my plasma basically give 180 degree viewing...

Vertical viewing angle is important because it means you don't have to adjust the hight of the TV to suit how you sit... With a RP, you would need to have it nearly perfect...

Ok well I can see that could be a problem for some people that have funny TV console.

But personally everyday Joe would see this set and be totally blown away with the image quality. According to that review, apart from that (small) problem, it's awesome. Bang of bucks IMO I still think it's better value for money.

180 degree viewing eh!? how would you see the screen face at all if you were at the extents of the 180 degrees? all you would see if the side of the facia... unless the screen is curved or suhn.

My apologies... I figured you'd get that 178 degrees is similar to "basically 180 degrees".

My opinion is that the LaserVue's colour reproduction and contrast capabilities look very promising, but in its current form, its ruined by the fact that you still have to deal with rear projection viewing angles.

There is a reason why you don't see rear projection TV's for sale anymore (and a reason why they were never particularly popular in Australia) - they're not as good as plasma / lcd.

My girlfriend has a big f***er of a panasonic rear projection TV (admitedly its not HD, not LaserVue) but I cringe when I have to look from even the slightest angles... you get a grey tone over the entire picture.

I couldn't stand spending $7000 USD and still having - at the end of the day - a rear projection TV with good colour reproduction.

Buy a projector. You can look at it from any angle and it's bigger.
