So basically I've been playing with this idea of a side project ever since I was involved with TNN, but back then APRA couldn't offer a license to do what I wish to legally. It's something I'm still giving some thought, but for now I just wanted to get some feedback on prerequisite understandings of peoples buying behaviors and attitudes to purchasing music. I've picked you guys as a small sample of non-typical/non-target people.
First off, I'm aware there'll be a few (perhaps even a majority) of people here don't listen to chart or popular music because they simply don't like it. That's fine - and simply saying so will give the feedback I need from those people. I have a few things I'm curious to find out regarding the ARIA, Billboard, and other popular charts. What I'm trying to find out though is a) Whether or not people actually listen to popular/chart music b.i) Whether people actually listen to shows that play chart music or countdowns. b.ii) If not, why? (eg, in my case I don't only because I haven't listened to FM radio for years apart from when I'm in the car, which is rarely) c.i) Do people have popular music in their MP3 collections or digital media players (eg iPod, Zune) c.ii) Do people also copy music which might happen to be in the charts but they don't necessarily or particularly like to their MP3 collections or media players, simply because it's either part of a compilation they *cough*own, or because they just like to have it there for whatever reason? d) What percentage of music in your collection comes from paid download services, whether subscription or perpetual download? e.i) Do you purchase tracks which you might not ordinarily listen to at all. e.ii) Would/do you, if they are significantly cheaper than other tracks? f) Would you ever pay a significantly reduced fee to be able to play tracks for a limited period of time (ie, subscription license), if this period time was defined at the time of purchase (for example a perpetual download might be 99c per track, a 45 day license might be 10 or 25c?) g) What pricing do you believe is acceptable for tracks, whether they are old/archived songs, current popular/chart songs, b-sides, album-only releases... give me some numbers, I want honest opinions. Seriously - I'm after any or all feedback on these kinds of topics. Hopefully it provides some constructive ideas. |
