It still looks like a fukcing cheese wedge. But millions of lemmings can't be wrong..
Is it still one of the most environmentally unfriendly cars to manufacture and dispose of? |

who cares? and no they changed the batteries. The only reason it was so bad is because normal cars have 1 battery and these have several.

hehe top gear rocks, that is the first gen prius tech though. Things are a little different these days 10 years on. There is two diesel golfs at work and they are both horrible and have a lot worse fuel economy, been told about 8L/100k's. This is actual city driving too not bs factory figures.

Why can't they make them look better? Why does the environmentally friendly car have to look like a piece of s***? Surely its not only because of the dual engines/space etc.

I don't know s*** about cars, but I sure think the Prius is one ugly-ass sucker. Surely they would have sold a billion more of these if they didn't look so chumpy.

any ICE car gets horrible mileage in the city, it's because you're moving a heavy lump of metal from 0-50 repeatedly. 8L/100 is a bit sad for a small diesel though, they must be caining it or maybe they are only second-gen common rail or something. my '08 diesel weighs 2200kg and uses 9.6 with leadfoot city driving. I can maintain 8/100 city driving across a two week period (one tank) of commuting from the southside to indro + weekend running around if I even remotely attempt to drive efficiently
regarding the prius looks - dunno why it has that ugly design, there's no reason it has to look ugly. look at the honda civic hybrid, it's exactly the same shape and look as the petrol version. and normally toyota make decent looking cars |

ara, those figures are always fudged. They just take the best possible consumption rates. Very different when you actually have to break and stop. On redbook the 06 onwards prius's are listed as 3.5.

Another happy prius owner.
I also have a VT clubsport. Guess which car sits in the garage depreciating all day. I used to drive from Dayboro to Northgate and back every day, used 3.9 l/100km in summer, 4.1 in winter (has to keep the engine running more in winter to keep it warm, and for heating the interior). Now I live in cashmere, so no 100km/h stretches of road. 3.7 l/100km. I'd definitely consider the volt when it comes here, even if it is a chevy. But what I'm really waiting for is this |

Green Credentials Fuel Urban (l/100km) 10.0 Fuel Extra Urban (l/100km) 7.0 Fuel Combined (l/100km) 8.1 I get around 10.5l/100km in regular driving around town and have easily got it down as low as 8.5l/100km for highway/country driving. That's running 10psi instead of the stock 7, too. But I only fill up once a month, if that, even though it's our only car. We both walk/ride to work, and don't normally drive very far on the weekends. That's our way of beating fuel prices (forget this global warming/climate change/dragons fad that's currently going on) |

I thought it was a 990 adv too. I've ridden to work in shorts, have to say my knees feel pretty exposed when I do though
I have a hybrid Honda civic, its ok... quite possibly the most boring thing to drive on the planet so I never use it but it uses 4.8 /100 My 990 adv is probably about the same, maybe a bit less efficent, the honda civic has a 1300 cc engine and my 990, as you'd expect is about 990 odd cc, vash would know for sure since hes a serial lc8 purchaser |

Hey skitza!
Oh and please refer to previous posts for my reBUTTle. I drive to and from work everyday, usually bumper to bumper. If you stuck an m3 and prius in those conditions, well any non-hybrid car it would be no contest. You can't use fuel if the motor is never on. And the battery manafacturing he was talkng about was a very old study. Actually seeing that makes me think a little bit harder about what the guys say every week. We all know the curly hair guy does not believe in man made climate change (like me) so I wonder how much he just bag's stuff out as a pet hate. He does it nearly every week! You buy a car that suits your needs and everyone's needs are different. As I mentioned earlier I have massive genitals so I just wanted an economical car, comfy seats, gutless engines, buttonless entry, beefy aircon and lots of gadgets to play with. |

in fact if you put an m3 and a prius on the same track for 10 laps with stop start traffic the prius consumption would be 0.00. Funny how they didn't do that test.

it's not meant to be serious, it's just your usual top gear manner of making a point - which in this case is that, generally speaking, it's more about how a vehicle is driven than the type of vehicle it is. to go to the ridiculous lengths they did (and always do) when doing something like that is the reason the show is so awesome
and no, you can't take anything clarkson says without a grain of salt :) |

its on the internet.. it must be true.. i mean ross said on the internet he has massive genitals so it must be true (i believe ross, he's a believable fella, oh and handsome..)
I really do think everyone should be using the most uneconomical cars possible.. that way we'll get the hybrid performance technology quicker.. |

I think you're all missing the point - Toyota Prius looks FUGLY and people that buy them:
A) Have little care for appearance, and probably wear tracksuit pants in public B) Believe they're saving the environment, when in fact, owning and driving a car will still 'harm' the environment C) Like to sniff their own farts :) |

One thing I will give the prius and toyota credit for is how the prius operates under the bonnet.
Granted, that its probably over-engineered for what it does but still it's rather interesting how it all works. The prius is a combination of a Serial Hybrid (Chevy Volt) and Pararllel Hybrid (Civic Hybrid) but closer to the Parallel as you cant plug it in. Hence, the marketing term 'Hybrid Synergy Drive' a hybrid of a hybrid. It runs an 1.5 litre 'Atkinson Cycle' (not otto) 4cycl engine and an Electric motor they get these 2 engines to work through a 'Power Split Device' (CVT) that uses a plantery gear system. Then to top it all off it uses regenerative braking to charge the battery. To me this is what makes it unique ... and that it looks like a something that fell out of an Autobot's arse ;-) |

someone told me about people using priuses as 'generators' - ie your at home in a blackout, you use a 240v adapter, use power from it and the motor is off. when the battery is becoming low on charge, the petrol motor turns itself on to charge and off again when charge is complete. pretty clever hey. But hey, its not the real answer.
