Lately I'm finding myself want to access certain files I'd usually work on at home at work. I'm looking for a shared solution of some sort.
There's a few options out there, but having not used any I thought I'd try get some feedback from others. The key requirements are: - Has supporting software that works with Apple OS X 10.4 (Tiger). - " with Windows - Requires no manual sync - Must auto-connect/auto-mount if desired. In particularly this means reconnect if the client system goes to sleep or is disconnected etc. - Offline access to files with later automatic upload/sync. Nice to have features: - Driverless install Windows/Mac clients available - ie, something I can put on my USB drive to use from anywhere. - Reasonable subscription fee. - Ability to specify files on either systems filesystem for sync, rather than saving directly to the WebDAV folder, and it will auto-sync. The main one I've looked at is MobileMe, but it's 10.5 only. I really don't want to a) buy 10.5 and b) put 10.5 on a Core Duo iMac. I'm quite happy to use just an application that uses my own webspace, if the software is straighforward enough, as I pay for decent hosting - no point paying another $100/year if I can use existing resources to do the job. I know recently there was talk of some Microsoft service, but I don't know much about it - maybe someone else has some further feedback. Opinions? |

I presume you have a login domain at your work? The way we do this at my work is from home, just log into the network domain as usual, because it obviously won't find it, it'll just work in offline mode. You can use some kind of vpn client that will auto connect or if the pc/laptop goes to sleep, auto-reconnect. Openvpn can do this. Atm this org uses the built in windows vpn client which uses pptp and I'm not overly happy about that, I'm planning to move them over to cisco ipsec based solution sometime in the near future.
Once the vpn is connected files will sync up but only files in that users "My Docs" folder as everyone's account here has been set up with their My Docs folder on a central server. Network shares won't work until the vpn is connected though. I've also set up webdav for another org in the past as it was a requirement at the time to get Mozilla Sunbird to share calendars. This of course was for local use only so I'm not sure of webdav security across the net unless you ran it down an encrypted tunnel. edit: oh, and nfi how well any of this work with macs. last edited by Nailbomb at 09:26:21 22/Aug/08 |

Not this might be way off the left field but how about something like SVN ? You get the client for just about any platform that'll let you check the file in / out, and obviously it supports off line etc. ?
Not sure about driver-less thinga thing _but_ you can certainly get SVN to run with web access with Apache, obviously user/pass protected if need be. Just an idea :) |

Have a look at Amazon S3 - online storage. You can get clients (JungleDisk) for Windows, Linux & Mac.

You get the client for just about any platform that'll let you check the file in / out, and obviously it supports off line etc. ? The (important) feature this misses is you still have to do a manual sync (ie, an svn commmit or svn update). I can see how a *nix fstab could be written to use and do this automatically, but it would be a pain for windows - and I don't know of anything that already exists. I presume you have a login domain at your work? No. The systems this is to be used with would not connect to any kind of domain. |
