I just watched this amazing video. It's called "Unwrap Mosaics" and was just featured at SIGGRAPH 2008. In a nutshell, you take a video, and it will create a 2d map of a face or whatever (much like an unwrapped 3D texture), which you can then paint on and have it automagically composited back into the video, with some pretty impressive results.
