Valve have released a trailer showing off the Soldier class in the upcoming Team Fortress 2. Check it out, but prepare to be impressed. Interesting to see juicy gibs in it as well, showing they're hopefully not sanitising it to get a lower rating or anything. Also on the Team Fortress 2 front comes another trailer showing off some of the rendering technology and how it relates to their art direction. Probably more interesting to people with an interest in game development. |

Hahha that soldier video is great, I cannot wait for this game /agreeing with the gibs remark, thats what made the original tf so glorious, Quake gibs have always been the best from any fps |

That is one of the funniest game trailers I've seen in ages. Absolutely love the angle they have taken with the comic style graphics, should help them to get a better rating not going for realism.
This game is going to rock. |

Episode Two has been repeatedly delayed but is set to be released on October 9, 2007 in North America for PC, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3. For the rest of the world, the release date is October 12. |

Yeah now see the TF2 in action on the XBOX 360... Filmed at the GC 07.
HERE These videos give a look at how it might look ingame? Just seems better. I love these quotes (from the comments section):
and this
As for me I have no complaints about how the TF2 gameplay looks. It looks new and freaking awesome and I used to play TFC from 2001~2004 but I will leave that for the rainy day that and the above quote is pure class. Adapt or die. Bunny hop, no grenades or grenades and bunny hop. Take it what you will. last edited by Kimbo at 01:11:27 02/Sep/07 |

If TF2 doesn't have uber conc jumping, it fails.
s*** it's so long ago I can't remember... but you could conc jump from the water on fort into the enemies base right... and then conc jump from the top of the enemies fort to your fort with the flag to cap? |

It'll be good to see what other maps are included, a jungle level could be pretty cool. The map that was shown in that video was a little dull looking, reminds me too much of a CS map.

I assume they're deliberately not going to perfectly re-create TFC - they're going to be trying to make a mass-market-accessible shooter here. The unique style is obviously going to help, but if they just recreate TFC gameplay I don't think that's going to be enough for people to really get into? |

Public TFC just sucked. It was a bunch of heavy weapons/soliders that were chasers... stupid noobs didn't realise that if you were attacking the enemies base, you don't turn around a chase a medic/scout that happened to slip past, resulting in a s***fest game.
Proper wars on TFC rocked with designated offense/defence teams, no homosexual chasers and high action gameplay. |

Well people would argue "why would I just let him run pass and go get the flag?", sure you can chase him back into your base and kill him... then you get a f***ing lame deadlock game where nobody can capture flags.
In the wars I played it was 8 vs 8, 4 on defence (stayed in base entire time, engineers, soliders and heavy weapons) and 4 on offense (good fast soliders, medics and scouts). Offense teams would pass eachother non stop, but do you see the problem if an offense team runs back into its own base chasing the other offense team? Nobody ends up capturing flags... because it's 8 vs 4, and the other team doesn't win either because they have nobody getting flags. Hence s***fest. |

Well if the game was designed where strategy and teamwork could win it, you wouldnt need to introduce a rule like "no chasing"

The team that used strategy did win it, that's the point, they won it every single time without fail.
When you have 0 people going for the flag (team of chasers), you got 0% chance at winning, no matter how good a team of chasers is or how many frags they get, they will never win a game of CTF. Instead of having an exciting 30 minute game where each team would capture 10 times each... the chasers would get 0 flags and the other team would get 2 or 3 (the only reason was because non chasers were typically more pro players). |

Khel I just explain it all perfectly clear.
If they chase, they have 0% chance of capping flags, hence they will never win. Would you play an online game where you can never lose? I sure as hell wouldn't. |

It sounds like a softcock way to play CTF. If I'm running into the enemy's base, and I see one of their guys with our flag, I'm gonna kill him (or at least try to). If I see an enemy running into my base as I'm running out, I'm gonna kill him (or at least try to). Granted theres exceptions, say for example they're doing a massive rush at my base, I'll ignore the people attacking and go attack their base instead because it'll be weakened, and if I get their flag, they can't cap my flag, but a blanket "Don't shoot at the people on offense" rule just sounds soft.
And I don't see how it means they'll never cap flags, if player A is better than player B, and player A runs into player B on the way out of his base, player A will kill player B and continue on with his job of capping the flag. How is that a bad thing? How is that making him lose the game? Hes just scored a kill for his side, taken out a threat to his flag, and hes still in there continuing on with his job. Nobody ever had problems winning CTF in the days of Quake and Quake 2 before these silly "no chasing" rules sprang up. A flag cap should be a big thing, it should take a lot of work, it shouldn't be something both sides get to do 10 times in a match. Inventing rules to make it easier to cap flags so more people can feel like they don't suck at the game is just soft. I can tell you now, I'm going to shoot at everyone I see, and if they don't shoot back because they think they're under the imaginary protection of some "no chasing" rule, then all the better for me. |

Did you play TFC Khel?
I'm not sure how Quake CTF was played, but I pretty sure there was no class system? And I don't see how it means they'll never cap flags, if player A is better than player B, and player A runs into player B on the way out of his base, player A will kill player B and continue on with his job of capping the flag.No he won't, fullstop. A medic or a scout (the only people that can cap flags, rare exceptions are pro soliders on extremely small maps) takes multiple clips of ammo to kill another medic/scout and will end right the way back at there capture point. By the time they get back out to 1/2 way, the other offense has already respawned and they pass eachother again... s***fest continues. Player A will never continue, they always pass eachother at half way... A will always chase B back into there base and kill them, by the time A is 1/2 way B is respawned and already back into there base. If you want to frag people and play defense, pick a class that can kill somebody in 3 seconds, not chase them around the map for 45 seconds with multiple clips of a pissweak gun that's built for capturing the other persons flag. |

Ok just the quick final word on TFC as a gameplay mechanical model. The major problem with the old model according to Robin Walker when I was talking to him at the AGDC in 2004 (what he told me when he came to Melbourne and did the talk on the source engine) was that the classes didn't have any specific roles. So you'd just have your medic capturing the flag cause his health points would regen. Which is why he got rid of the concussion grenades and put more emphasis on whos doing what. It was just a case of how do you change class structure to make it work. I am ALSO sure that people will server side mod (people being the type of people like Billdoor who did www.planetNeoTF.com or Drunken F00l with the www.adminop.net) their server to be unique as well. That is the OTHER thing thats so versatile about the HL2 Engine that you can still HOOK the server functions and change things. Take for instance Counter Strike 1.6/Source in this day and age. When was the last time you had a proper game of CS? Because most of the servers I've observe are either climbing servers, surfing maps, rpg servers, warcraft 3 servers... So as my favourite quote always goes "CS isn't really CS anymore its more CS FPS RPG". I am not a big fan of CS and I never will be. I am a 'TFC/2/FF/UT2k4 player/Quake 3 Pro Mode/Insert FPS thats not your one shot kill here bar railgun.' and maybe some of the Battlefield series. But thats where I limit my self to. I don't want to go down the road of Crapper Strike/Cheater Strike/Camper Strike no brainer. The other problem is with the bunny hopping you'd have all the Quake style DM people just bunny hopping around negating the effect of running fast with the scout and there had to be more influence on "class" based gameplay. Not so much the Quake DM fragfest with all the bugs that only the supposed pro players knew. Now Bunny hopping works in a Quake 3 Style DM environment because you've got 1v1 all the weapons have advantages and disadvantages and thats the gameplay ideal. In TFC you've just got classes which aren't refined they are rough around the edges. People will still play Sniper but then you get people who play Soldier complaining about the sniper or the heavy weapons guy and you get the medic doing the job of the scout and not actually supporting the heavy weapons guy and this is where things get messed up. So if you had people only playing medic and capturing the flag and doing the job of the scout. You'd have no emphasis to play the scout and even though the rocket jumping with the soldier is still in there, it has a trade off that you loose health when actually rocket jumping. So unlike bunny hopping that has no trade off (where you just move fast like a d******* and stop the scout from being effective) the rocket jump for the Soldier still has that aspect off not being exploitable. So in a nutshell. Team Fortress Classic is not DM. All classes needed refinement hence TF2. Gameplay mechanics only work well when A: Certain things have tradeoffs & B: Everyone can do them. If everyone can do it then it doesn't become an exploit it just becomes a quirk in the gameplay or what is formally known as the proper definition of gameplay bug Take for instance Counter Strike and the AWP with Desert Eagle quick switch thing. This could be classified as a quirk in the gameplay but at the same time it would also be considered an exploit because its not in CS Source and we know that CS Source doesn't really have the option to do this but. People can still run fast with the knife. But that quick switch thing has been toned down. The weapons now have more purpose. So depending on which weapon you buy. The price in theory determines usefulness. Makes CS bit more level and boring just the same. *grins* But at the same time we have the whole server side mod thing. I won't say Fortress Forever got it wrong. In fact www.fortress-forever.com may even have it right. What I am saying is that we have been focusing on graphics for quite a few years now -- 8 years to be specific if you look at it from HL1 and TFC and now with the releases and likes of Crysis, HL2 DM -- we might probably be moving back into gameplay mechanics and some really AWESOME way features in games. EG: The moddable nano suit in Crysis. But on the bright hand side Fortress Forever will appeal to the Quake DM style of people with improvements and TF2 will appeal to the people who want to take the TFC adoptive gameplay further. last edited by Kimbo at 10:19:35 09/Sep/07 last edited by Kimbo at 10:22:53 09/Sep/07 last edited by Kimbo at 10:30:37 09/Sep/07 |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDUiN5jpEmg Have a look at the blue medics... 2:00 to 2:10 that blue beam is the medics healing thing. TEAMPLAY? Absolutely :) Sorry about it being in german but just looking at the gameplay you get the freaking idea... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OmOUNkbIDE or maybe with music and I don't need to emphasis the second video I think it pretty much summarises what TFC is all about. Good laughs, good times, ridiculousness and not the annoying "Go Go Go" every time the round restarts in Counter Strike. Whats that? Freedom of choice in TFC? Absolutely. last edited by Kimbo at 10:45:14 09/Sep/07 |

This is the first game in a long time that I have looked forward to.
The best bit is my old beast looks like she'll even run it (P4 2.4, 512, 9600XT) although I might go snooping for a little more RAM. |

Need we say more about Counter Strike? One shot kills. Now people play surfing maps cause they are bored. Oh did I forget to mention HACKING! YES THATS RIGHT. HACKING!. Yes I did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFrwcbvD94Y Which just screws CS's gameplay model -- well ok what's left of CS's gameplay model over totally. Talk about initiative and exciting gameplay. *grins* Ok steps to play Counter Strike and stuff to learn: 1. Download Counter Strike Source off steam. 2. Learn to run with knife. 3. Learn not to plant bomb, rescue hostages, etc 4. Download client dll hook 5. get banned buy Counter Strike cause Im so addicted again. Please... and you're calling this a "tactical based shooter" with "strategical elements" erm blargh? I am sorry where is the strategy in deciding to rush or not to rush? *scratchs head* I am confused. Sorry for the emotional icons but I just find it cynically funny, no second that I find it hysterical. last edited by Kimbo at 12:09:31 09/Sep/07 |

I don't really know what kimbo was talking about, but he seems to be against CS and in support of TF2, so he sounds like hes on the winning team.
