Basically a set top box that can connect to a wireless network and you can send video to it from your computer

"Basically a set-top-box"? I think you mean "basically a set-top-box without actually being a set-top-box". It was a great idea, until apple decided to release it without even having a DVB decoder in it. Not only that but you can't even attach a thirt-party one to add this functionality.

From recent history it has been notoriously difficult turning a software based ethernet media player into an hardware appliance. I'm scared to think what their support is like ;)

possibly it just supports x264 and thats it. The site's light on detail.

You're absolutely correct, it's not a set-top box, it's a toaster!

if someone could mod it for divx etc it would be great, but as it stands it's pretty useless, the aussie RRP is apparently $449 which is pretty good compared to the $1000 listed above for a different one that doesn't have wireless, but $449 don't mean s*** when you can't play your downloaded movies and tv shows, acquired from legal sites of course.

I think its main market is people who would download movies/music through iTunes. Nice box if that's your thing.

Apple TV is controlled through iTunes, so you don't just send your downloaded divx movies to your player, you transcode them for iTunes.

And ever since video iPods came out, the compatible formats for that have become more popular for online file distribution.

This is only the first generation of the product too, the first iPod was only available for the mac, but as time goes on they put more effort into satisfying the consumer.

Wait what..having to transcode one of the most popular video formats to make it work is putting "more effort into satisfying the consumer"

I'm going to have to disagree with you there, since doing on-the-fly transcodes with iTunes is pretty straightforward. Apple are of course aiming at use with Macs, which the current ones are pretty quick (2x realtime transcodes or better at the moment).

It's not intended for storing your primary copies, just a cached version, so no big deal there. With only 40GB on it, that's fair enough.

course it's fair, there are about 80 video standards, and while it would be dreamy for it to play all of them, history shows people don't mind forking out a thousand bucks for a device than can handle exactly 1 format.
And until recently the consumer has never really been able to easily change a video's format right from his couch.

This product will only inspire people to create more software that will allow you to create your own media centre box, hell you can get a fully functional mac that is only slightly bigger than the apple TV. Dunno about it's multimedia connectivity though, but at least things are heading that way...

One more vote for modded Xbox with XBMC. Add in XBMC-MythTV frontend if you want set top box goodies.

to get divx avi's into itunes you need to recode them to quicktime mp4s. There are little apps to do it, but itunes should do it itself, but alack it doesn't.
