I got a new computer a few months back and have had no issues with it until about 2 weeks back where one time, after being turned off, when i went to turn the computer back on it would power everything up in the box, but stop there. It wouldnt send power to the keyboard or mouse and would beep and boot up.

That time i just opened it up and f***ed around a bit (removed power and ide cables from the hd's and then put them back in) and after a few goes it worked. This has happened twice since then and both times ive been able to get the computer back up but it happened again last night and i just cant get it to boot. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be or know how i could go about fixing it? All help greatly appreciated.

my pc is dying, and wont start, unless i unplug the main molex plug, while its turned off (obviously trying it while it was turned on wouldnt go so flash)

so i just leave it on now

Leaving your PC on all the time is stupid, replace the power supply or buy a new PC, it'll be something simple.

to save power
to reduce noise in house during night
to shuffle power leads around
to reduce temptation to use computer
to move it to another room
to take it to a lan
to reduce chance of damage during bad storm
to comply with laws of physics during blackout
to what-the-fook-ever!

deathwalker, sounds like it'd still be under warranty if it was purchased a few months ago

I vote for new psu, try to unplug any usb devices to see if it will at least power up.

If its powering on ALL the time and just not POSTing its unlikely to be PSU.

Possibly dirty RAM. I see it quite a lot especially with older machines, but it happens every now and then to new ones. The gold contacts tarnish when exposed to the air so if theyve been sitting around a warehouse unpackaged in a tray theres a good chance they'll be grubby.

1. take out RAM and get an eraser (yes the type you use with a pencil)
2. erase along the gold contacts, if they are dirty you should now see nice shiny goldness
3. brush off left over rubber bits (don't use ur fingers - body oil=bad)
4. reinstall RAM and see if thats fixed ur problem

I had to keep doing that to some ram I had, is there a way to stop it from tarnishing like perhaps some sort of non conductive oil? Mind you this ram was pretty damn old.

I had a computer that did this kind of thing, turned out the power caps next to the CPU had leaked & buggered up the board, see if any of them look funny like they've expanded or if there's any leakage.
