I run a small linux file server at home to store my data on. On it i have all my DVDs ripped to divx, all my CDs ripped to mp3, all my digital photos, backups of my desktop, laptop and gf's laptop etc. I have the media files there because i stream them to my media centre pc, or my laptop or whatever. Currently the server has an 80g drive for the OS and 2 300g drives for data, but I have just started to max out the storage on these, and as it is a slim line device just adding more drives internally isn't a viable solution. Im thinking of just replacing the 250g drives with 750g ones but thought i would ask if anyone else had a simular problem and have other solutions? |

USB externals ... only problem is ... linux has lame ntfs support.
So either you format them to fat32 for best portability, or you accept dodgy ntfs support Been thinking about making a mini-atx pc to run as a USB/NTFS capable file server. (Running 2000 probably). They only draw about 40 to 60 watts and cost about 600 or so. |

I'm currently in the process of altering my array and will have a bunch of 400Gb Seagate SATA drives within the next week to sell. Selling for $200 so if your interested, let me know.

Slugs are slow tung they max out at what 32megabit/s (4MegaByte/sec)... fine for a web server... and maybe streaming music off.
Do they support NTFS properly yet ? If not still stuck with fat32 and all its ugliness. Last time I checked, the linux ports didn't have ntfs-g3 running on them. |

ara, how about one of those 100CD/DVD spindle thingies? That'd give you the ability to put 9.7TB in a USB connected DVD changer. They're pretty cheap... <$200 I think. I just wish I could think of the manufacturer or product name so I could be more helpful on this :(
Here we go, found it: The Imation Disk Stakka. http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/20476 last edited by Raven at 19:54:45 29/Nov/06 |

Lacie == I'll break in 3 months after you've bought me.
Buying an CM 830 + 2 more 320gig's this week, should do for a while. Swap your drives with bigger ones, cheap and easiest way imo. |

Looks interesting but $469 seems a lot for something that a linux box will do. last edited by ara at 00:32:19 30/Nov/06 |
