How awesome does this game look set to be? That flamethrower is ubelievable, never seen such good looking flame in any game ever.

One question though, I noticed that 'compressed textures' was on as a default in the setup and this is not so in Q3a. Is this because they have tweaked the engine for such? and does it make that much of a difference. Im running this on a GF3 card.

Scale of 1 to 10 the game is a 9 for fun value.
A downer though, was Wireplay's inability to even maintain a cable player's ping below 100. The server's performace was nothing less than appalling.
This took away any form of enjoyment the game it self offerred.
60/60 players is hardly a load even on 1 monster system.
There is no excuese really - except for maybe the fact that they are part of and continue to associate with Telstra.

*shrug*

The map(s) are considerably larger than Q3a. Large map == large memory

Maybe because gfx cards are faster they can decompress the images on the fly and thus save valuable texture memory.

anyone's guess

texture compression in stock q3 is disabled cause when you turn it on it increases performance but you get some artifacts with certain cards and systems.

I would assume that if its enabled in wolf32 that they've done some engine tweakage and fixed the problem.

hmm, i realyl foudn it practically impossible to judge hwo good this game is due to the shockign lag, it was realyl really f***ed when i was playing it at like 5am.

it seems pretty cool, but like i said, i realyl can't judge at all while its so god damn laggy, i'm keen to play it on lan.

i think the wounding and medic system is really really cool, its great when you get healed and can keep fighting if you've been doing really well at a position.

i didn't play it for long... but where are the light infantry weapons from dod??? i wan't to see them, i think that mini gun is stupid, and i'd liek it better if the two teams had all different weapons. the sniping system was realyl cool and different, it made sniping a lot ahrder, but at the same time, not being able to move while zoomed doens't really have any justification except to make sniping harder, there is no real world excuse for it.

i hope when its done all text and all messages and everything do NOT look like they are ripped straight from quake3, i have no reall reason for saying that except i just don't like them.

oh yeah, one more thing, i was runnign it in the lowest detail and 640x480, so this may be different with high detail, but i found that unless shooting at dirst and stuff it was generally pretty hard to tell where your bullets were impacting, one thing that is good about cs reguardless of what you think of the game, its really easy to tell where your bullets are going.

anyhow, that's my thoughts, until i can play i in a lag free enviroment i'll stick to dod though, plus, i'm bored of that map already =]

a few points.

The minigun is VERY useful, a few times i've faced a well placed defender with one and it just stopped half our team advancing because anyone that ran out was immediately cut down.

It's hard to make judgement on the netcode when your ping is consistently over 250ms. It does seem to have prediction, which is EXCELLENT (i hate the totally non-intuitive non-prediction system).

Sniping is pretty good. It all seems much more toned down and realistic (although i'm no fan of realism). Not being able to move is a good thing, it stops people zooming then creeping up to ledges for quick shots. The 'bump' when you fire, throwing out your aim, is a good hinderance also. At least in the one map we got, despite it being VERY open, snipers were not a particularly strong class.

Damage was pretty balanced too i think, one shot kills from every weapon are kinda stupid in some other games. It takes a bit of a beating to kill someone (unless you've got a minigun :) ).

The flame thrower did quite much rock. It has it's place in combat and doesn't supersede guns - they can still kill you before you get a chance to fry them. I guess it's main use is in clearing rooms or causing a bit of panic (hehe i know i escaped with the docs a few times by spraying flames all over the place then sprinting away).

Sprinting is balanced well too, you get enough to be useful (handy to rush to the sea wall at the start to plant dynamite) but not enough, and it recharges slowly enough, that people just zip all over the place.

One thing i noticed is that strangely spam doesn't work so well. Despite the awesome airstrikes, it does require some degree of targetting to hit people - which is good.

MEDICS ABSOLUTELY ROCK!!! OMG how handy are they? It's just such a nice feeling when you are lying there dying and think 'fark i'm gonna have to wait 40sec to play again' then some nice medic comes and heals you back to half health immediately. Heh, one time i remember a fight in the front bunker with about 4 axis medics and 2 allied soldiers. The medics ran outta ammo pretty quick so were pretty screwed and the soldiers were chopping in to them, but whenever they 'killed' a medic, one of the other ones rushed over and revived him. I think i revived about 4 people in that fight, it was like we were indestructable :)

Anyway, i absolutely love it and once everyone works out the objectives and how to play a bit better as a team (in general), it'll be an awesomely fun game. The big annoyances were TK's, everyone playing soldier, lack of engineers on 1st section of allies' assault, lieutenants not dropping ammo (medics get only 32 bullets [1 clip] to start with!), the huge nasty lag, the time it takes you to learn how to manage your deaths better (ie. if reinforcements come in 3 seconds it's probably better to die than wait for a medic), people not knowing how to defend the radio room, people OBVIOUSLY going for frags (*ahem* to a few snipers out there) rather than things that give them good scores. Much of it is to be expected from a new game and i look forward to the full game.

They didn't actually plan wolf to be a multiplayer game did they? They certainly did a damn good job though.

A few recommendations though - GET RID OF THE Q3 CROSSHAIR NOW (perhaps the biggest give away that it's Q3 based and causes everyone to scream 'lame q3 mod!'), perhaps make dynamite quicker to defuse (allies weren't even defending it properly and i still only ever managed to defuse it ONCE out of many attempts).

yer the pistols are a bit weak though :p

Flame Thrower rocks, all though I hvnt used it. And the mingun is great fun (hint walk around with the moter constintly going but not firing...)

The sniper rifle is kinda s***ty, bu thay could be because of uber-lag.

Well I know the map back the front now and it could make for some interesting fights.

1 Smart medic, 1 Leutenit and 2 or 3 soldiers makes for a VERY tought team. But the medic must stay alive (this is the important part medics, stay alive!!)

The rounds are a bit short though :/
Its REALLY easy to tell the differance betweer teams too. All that tking is just stupid.

the flame thrower makes insane amounts of computer lag, displaying all those sprites, i belive it will be much faster in the final, cus at present 10 people flaming is pretty bad :)

from the readme..
The use of a flamethrower can impact the performance of the game at this time. If more than 2 players per team use the flamethrower at the same time, players may experience various performance issues.

hmm i donno but i must have set up my rates and snaps and such as I havent got any bithces about the leg or networking. I gad to jump on a distant server last night because all you bums were hogging WP . I was sitting on a ping of abut 190-200 and it played very well indeed. Lucky I guess.

I have noticed that BPA has been somewhat gay the last couple of nights playing Q3UT with pkt loss appearing to be the main culprit. Normaly Q3UT plays very well also and I never use to get Pkt loss at all previously. I think these might be issues that affected most in the RTCW test last night, give it a day or two for BPA to improve and I think you might find its fine.

P.S That flamethrower rocks. And I reckon the single player game will own. Lets hope MOH has a demo soon too hey.

Yeh Koopz im on adsl. As for graphics I suppose the only thing the gf3 does is higher res and smoother like you say plus, the FSAA improves textures and such too.

Just had a bash again just now for a while on a server with 150+ pings and it was pretty good. some models jumping about a bit i guess, had trouble sniping. On a better connection and definately lannage it will rock i reckon. I cant wait to see some of the daytime maps as well to really get a good look at what Greymater have done with the engine.

Just had a bash at it for a couple hours, was great fun. Last night it was seriously arse because of the 300+ pings wireplay was dishing out. Today I was getting about 50-100 so it was very playable.

It is lots of fun when the team actually plays as a team too. It was even better when people got over the flamthrower, sure it is a kick arse weapon but when every man and his dog has one team killing is rampant.

Also I found that it really is quite crap when 100% of your team are soldiers, perhaps it should force you to be medic or engineer or something if there are none.

Perhaps when the final version is released they could limit the number of certain weapons ?? Maybe that would ruin it a bit, I dunno. It still rocks a lot.

Very nice game.

Acid, and other quakers who hate cs, the thing is that wolf has very similar recoil and accuracy to cs from what 've seen, it even has the expanding crosshair thing from cs.

but somehow the features you hated in cs when appearing on the quake engine will suddenly be good not bad in your opinion.

anyhow, i what i really wanted to comment on was this post by scuzzy "Im just waiting for excelent SP, screw multiplayer, Since quake2 i have only enjoyed one other FPS SP game max payne, And i hope to all hell that SP RtCW will be good."

OMG!!! YOU MORON!!! you think that quake2 and max payne were the bes single playere fps games?!?!? ffs how boring was quake2? it was s*** single player game, compare it to half-life or unrael that actually had atmosphere and storyline, there is no competition!!!! ok you might have liked max payne, it looked ok, but ffs man, quake2 omg, and i think half-life and unrela were much better than max payne, and i hear system shock2 was pretty awesome and in depth, your a fool, a complete fool, you must have the smallest most limited mind if that your idea of top single palyer games.

Ever seen how people complain that CS has sloppy netcode AND that the Q3 engine has sloppy netcode? Interesting, considering that both of these games have some of the BEST netcode EVER. If you feel the netcode isn't good enough, feel free to recommend the changes to Valve and Id as to how they can reduce your ping and packet loss. (hahaha)

RE:Axis
Scrap the Max Payne bit, but Quake2 was just one of my long term favorite Single Player games, and theres nothing to chage my point of view. Quake2 had a awsome feel to it, the map design was incredible compared to past games. and it realy had a dept to the game, you felt like you were there.

I have yet to have a SP experience such as Q2's, sure HL is awsome, with its plot and detail, but it never got me addicted asmuch as Quake 2 did.

I thought Q2 SP was pretty good when i was playing it, but then I got Unreal and Half-life and it really is boring compared with those two. Then there are a multitude of SP FPSs that are even BETTER:
System Shock 2
Thief 1/2
No One Lives Forever
Deus Ex
Soldier of Fortune
Serious Sam
Daikatana (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA)

Of course, these games came out much later, so if they weren't better, it'd be pretty sad.

q3 players hate CS coz its based on half life, which looks like a turd, plays like a turd, in fact, it is a turd.

q3 on the other hand is a slick engine, that can be adapted to suit whatever the developer wants, and still looks and plays a s***load better then HL/CS. i know youre gonna jump on me for drawing comparisons between 2 engines developed years apart but who cares, smart ppl dont live in the middle ages (ie taliban/CS players)

i for one still dont understand how my frames are absolute s*** in CS, while they never drop below 120 in q3.

anyway, i have a bitch about the players playing wolf, it seems most are CS players because alot of them have the mentality of a 14 year doing their own thing. *some* people dont understand that u _need_ and engineer to blow up the walls, u _need_ liutenants to give out ammo(its annoying when youre a medic and have no ammo and a lieutenant just walks past u not giving a f***) and direct air strikes, u _need_ a medic to heal people(which can be quite annoying when u have to wait for a minute to play again). as well as the people who dont have a clue, who dont understand theres an objective to the map, or they get the objective and run down the beach, ive shot some dick in the back and taken them to the correct place once coz he obviously didnt have a clue.

i guess the wire is there for exactly that purpose, just to get in your road and be annoying :)

What ABSOLUTELY s***S ME is the servers with FF off. What axis then do is camp the war room with 4 people with flame throwers and there's not a thing you can really do to stop them. It seems flame damage is accumulative? As in, if 2 ppl flame you, you get double the damage rate as from one person - including the lingering flame damage. From 4 people it is pretty much you = dead in less than a second and they can't hurt each other. Not to mention the gratuitous grenades in close quarter combat, since it wont hurt your own team. Sure tk'ers are annoying but i've only ever seen one that was doing it deliberately and i sorted him out after a short while. Wolf was obviously designed with FF on in mind.

Yep correct Cainer and Randolphe...a lot of people trying out RTCW at the mo have zero idea about 'team work'. Many just going off gung-ho and trying to win the map themselves.

I think some of the old school HL TFC players might do well in this game as it did encourage people to work together as a unit. Attackers, defenders, engineers securing points ect..

I would love to see the final game of RTCW allow the enginner to lay mines in fields or areas ect.. or perhaps even be able to rig booby traps like the ol trip mines in TFC. s*** even the Nazis use to booby trap or mine defences once they deserted them and dropped back to further defensive positions.

Also the leutennants are great for distibuting ammo 'in the field' but I think an armoury of some sorts in the installations might be another good idea as well, even if the armoury only had a limited
amount of supplies.

Plus an enemy discovering and armoury (especially and engineer) would be able to blow that sucker to devastating effect.
