Going along the lines of the "Shopping advice in bangkok" thread.
I am heading back to aus in about 10days and have 2 stopovers in Seoul, Sth Korea. 8 hours on the way over but overnight on the way back.
Has anyone visited Korea and if so what is it like?? Any good shopping areas or anything else to recomend visiting??

Actually it is a real thread.
I fly into Seoul next wednesday. Will do the 3 hour tour that comes with the stopover but that still leaves a bit of time to kill.
The wife wants to shop of course, so i turn to anyone here with any idea of what to do in Sth Korea.

Mention The US are hostile dogs, imperialist scum, and other remarks for further 20% discount on additional warheads.

go up to the dmz in the north..

you will get a feel for how serious the world still is...

north korean power mogers are f***ing scary

you get to see north korean soldiers who are put into the blue room (in the middle of the dmz) because they are the scariest mother f***ers the north has to offer.. they stand in a tae kwon do attack stance for there whole shift..

they are there to be intimidating.. and you can go see them.. i dont think cameras are allowed though... its some scary s***.. remember while you are there..(the tour guides will let you know as well) the dmz is technically still a place of war.. you can be killed just being there..

happy holidays

If we had more time i would love to go see that stuff, is very interesting.
Unfortunatly with the time we do have we will stick to Seoul itself.
Has anyone here actually been there??

Been to Seoul twice on holidays, it's a nice place. Shopping is generally pretty good, depends what you're after. The places that come to mind are Nandaemon, Myongdong, and Dongdaemon.

Nandaemon is a big market place, you get all sorts of cheap and fake stuff there, food, clothes, bags, some electronics.
Myongdong is just across the road from Nandaemon, but a lot nicer. Mainly just clothes shops, lots of name brands. They're not incredibly cheap, but worth a look. You'll also find some big department stores in Myongdong.
Dongdaemon is a few minutes by subway from Nandaemon. It's another big clothes shopping area. Basically they have like three huge buildings full of hundreds of little stores. Everything here is open till about 11pm I think, possibly later.

That's all I can think of at the moment. The cost of most things in Nandaemon and Dongdaemon are open to negotiation. If you feel like doing something more touristy, you can walk from Myongdong/Nandaemon to the cable car that takes you up to Seoul Tower, which has a pretty alright view.

there's a dish there that's really really nice, but i think it might be a summer only dish. Can't remember the name, but it's chicken stuffed with ginseng & glutenous rice in a broth. really yummy.

yea was in seoul for our stopovers on the way to london and back, welly& cafes are everywhere in the airport, watch out for the red paste its incredibly hot. only had 3 hours on the way back didnt leave the airport but on the way over we had a night there, didnt actually get to the city cause the dude said it was a hour and a half ride, we went somewhere they called it newtown was pretty much a dump, we got there at about 8pm on a monday was pretty much all closed up,tho we were quite boozed, ahh free booze on planes. go to a 7-11 and pick up some cheap ass 1.6L beers and get drunk, thats pretty much what we did. but we werent looking to shop. people are very nice can only say "grood mooring" and "dank yooo". the airport has some cool building out the front of it, could be for the train, looks like a space ship.
