PSPUpdates have word of a working firmware downgrader for the v2.0 firmware which will (apparently) downgrade you to the homebrewable v1.50 firmware. The comments are cautiously optimistic, but I'd probably be inclined to wait a bit longer before you risk turning your PSP into a $400 paperweight. |

My brother is doing it now and he says it is sweet and even if you f***ed it you could still send it back to Sony and get a replacement because (I have no idea nor do I care enough to check on how to do the downgrade) somehow they won't know if you've tried it or not.

Of course, Sony couldn't just open up the PSP to all development. That would kill off their USD$10,000 developer license fee, and hurt those companies who pump out s*** games because the general public are producing better products than the corporate giants.

I have a PSP with v2.0 firmware, but what is this homebrew thing there talking about with v1.50 firmware? The homebrew thing means you can run 'unofficial' code off the Memory Stick. For example, someone has compiled up a version of Doom from the Doom source that will run on the PSP. So, basically, you can play a heap of different games without having to buy them at $70 a pop. |

If you can run Doom, trog will make it legal.

Its legal as long as it's not copyrighted code....
Btw, there's news that Sony is bringing out a new version soon which fixes the overflow 'problem'. So if you're thinking about buying a psp, I'd do it in the near future. |

Copying a potential port of Doom to your PSP is legal* as long as you own a copy of the full game to be allowed to copy the media (textures, sounds, etc) over.
Basically you just need the IWADs (doom.wad or doom2.wad). (* = legal from the point of idsoftware. Who gives a s*** about Sony) last edited by parabol at 13:18:55 28/Sep/05 |

doom is open source now so it doesnt matter anyway The code is, but the graphics/sounds aren't 'open' and are still protected by law. Like I said, you still need to own a copy of the full game for legality, unless you retexture the game from scratch, nexuiz style. last edited by parabol at 13:33:21 28/Sep/05 |

I guess why this would garner so much interest here is if you've bought an australian PSP, you can now upgrade it to 2.0 with the sony provided disk, then downgrade it to 1.0 and upgrade it to 1.5. Once done, you can copy a little bit of freely available software plus any of the ISOs you see on the net to a 1 or 2 gig sony memory stick, and bobs your uncle (if your uncle is a psp pirate).

Whoop. You do know that there is a browser exploit for Wipeout Pure don't you? Granted, its not as pretty as the v2 browser, but I'm sure the massive amount of homebrew that's about easily evens the score. 1.5 ftw.
