Hey all!
Got 2 lans in the next 5 days...so thus its time for me to get my computer running now before im the dreaded formatee of the lan. First up, its been a long time coming, been putting up with my dead gf4 and my replacement 32mg GF1 for too long! Its time to get a new card!! :D Lookin at getting something in the 200-250 price range. I dont play many games, and mainly play WoW. But i want it to be able to handle UT2004. Lookin at somethin like this, might be able to get it cheaper too :) http://www.gamedude.com.au/prod_show.php?art_no=viASn6600_256 Edit: btw i have an AGP slot only... that says its an AGP 8x...but sif i can see anywhere that says if its PCI/AGP. So this? http://www.gamedude.com.au/prod_show.php?art_no=viALagp6600gt_128 256 vs 128? 256 is slower ram but more of it? better for high res? Or am i completely off base? Also computer problems! Basically having a lot of errors poping up that s*** me. When i start computer i get like 8-10 win32 services crash errors. And ill have popup errors saying problem with "00000x0011 memory address" (example only). Plus my computer makes a weird whirring noise (like a hdd accessing at like 1000000x a min) but i unplugged my hdds and it still happened...unplugged my cd rom drive still there! Yet when i scroll up/down itll stop! :| I am thinking its the vid card (gf1 old as f***) But its a bit strange to me :S I downloaded the WD drive diagnostic (both drives are new/RMA new) but cant find it on my hdd so i am downloading again. Probably gonna have to reformat to get rid of the errors, but thought some of you gurus might be able to help :) Oh and my virus scanner is updated and i run a microsoft antispyware scan every night at 2am :) |

I'd personally go the Asus X800 Pro, but that's just me. Plus it also costs over $600 still. I guess if you're after something cheap, those 6600GT cards are half decent.

Or perhaps even something like this:
http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=6&&bid=2&sid=6726 ? Seems decent enough, supports Dx9.0. 175 bucks. I play f*** all games atm and dont wanna spend the earth on something i wont use much. http://www.teamhardware.com/reviews/00015/index.php - review said it didnt go so well in hl2 etc :S last edited by Fireblood at 20:23:34 28/Jun/05 |

That'll run Unreal fine, my old ATI 9700 pro used to so this shouldn't have any difficulties.

i have a 9600 xt, there pretty good value for money, but i disagree with the hl2 review with the 9600 xt, i have a 9600 xt and it just doesnt cut it with hl2 and bf2 etc...any older game should be fine. Something about the 9600, it can render shaders, lights etc, well it can look nice, but the fps is shot to all hell, even when i turn down my detail (i usually run hl2 on low settings), i get only 30-40 fps, i got a gig of ram and a p4 2.4, but go the 6600 GT, its much better and its ddr3. Does processor speed between 2.4ghz and 3.2 have much of an impact whengaming? the 3.2 has hyperthreading the 2.4 does not. I am thinking my cpu is my problem.

somethings f***ed with yours then lol, i played hl2 and bf2 and i had no fps problems what so ever....
i have a amd 2000xp, 1gb of s*** ram and mine works fine on low and works fine on medium aswell, apart from the odd chug. saying that, i wouldnt buy a 9600xt now tho.. nothing under the 6600gt if i was getting a new card last edited by sc00bs at 00:47:30 29/Jun/05 |

Another vote for the 6600GT. They are great value and even on GFX whores like BF2 they produce good performance.
If only you had an SLI board they're even more tempting - save up a bit more cash down the track, whack in another 6600GT and you've got a s***load of GPU power for a reasonable price. EDIT: Just checked the link to Suhaib's sale. Same card as I've got, good performer (running at 580MHz core & 1150MHz RAM), only complaint is the fan is too frickin loud (I sleep in the same room as my PC). $220's not a bad price either. last edited by mongorian at 12:56:40 29/Jun/05 |

Then turn it off when you go to sleep, if you have to leave it constantly for d/ling reasons then you download to much porn, movies music etc, plsu your wasting power if the comp is doing nothing just sitting on, i know everyone seems to have this complex of never turning off a pc, thats just silly business. |

256 vs 128?256 will out perform the 128 at higher res and of course higher AA/AF settings. |

thats right, the card has more room to stick textures, so in games like bf2 with large maps, you wont chug when you fly around the map quickly, the textures load quicker.

Tiny: I have an off-peak quota to make use of, hence the PC staying on downloading overnight. What I download is up to me, as I pay for net access. Have to get those *nix distro's somehow.
I've had plenty of GFX cards before with reasonable fans (GF256, Powercolor GF2 Pro, GeCube 9600XT eXtreme), I'm kinda annoyed this one is so much louder. |
