Hi ladies and gents.

I've got heaps of footage off a digi camcorder (already put onto my computer) from my ski trip to Canada and was wanting to edit it (eg. chop bits, slow down crashes, fast forward bits) and make a movie outta it with music, etc etc, and was just wondering what the best program would be to use to do this.

Thanks for any help.

Adobe Premiere is a name that comes up now and then.

Depends your level of skill. I prefer Adobe Premier, but if you want something fast and simple, Ulead DVD studio/ movie creator is pretty good.

Yeah, I really like Premiere, but if you haven't used it before its not really something you can easily just pickup and use.

I've never used it, but I've heard that Sonic Foundry's Vegas isn't half bad either.

Just use Microsofts Movie Maker, it does everything you'll be wanting to do and its nice and free.

Auto scene detection, titles, transitions etc etc etc

We have at work both Avid and Premiere, and most people after trying all 3 just go with movie maker it does a good job pretty easily. Where the other 2 can do FANTASTIC jobs but they are hard enough to use that even doing an ok job is difficult (in comparison to movie maker).

if you have access to a Mac, use iMovie. One of the easiest movie editing programs out and will import all your clips with minimal hassle and cut them into each clip for you automatically. You can then import it to iDVD to create a dvd copy of your movie. it's Mactastic :P

Its very easy to do a good job, and with a little patience you can do a pretty awesome job.

Ulead VideoStudio 9 for the win.

It seriously rocks. I fumbled my way through the wizard and made an impressive DVD. Adobe is too complicated for simple people like me. I just wanted impressive results without doing a training course.

And it even crashes at random intervals, allowing you to lose your work! What a bargain.

Well, it's been 2 formats since I last used it, so it probably doesn't now.

Sony Vegas is easy to use and quite powerfull for video/audio editting. Avid is a more proffesional package, but you might take a while to learn, unless you have someone showing you the ropes. Both programs have a shareware version on their websites.

Adobe Premier, Video Vegas, EIDUS or AVID
