Got an athlon XP here. I transfered my PC box to the inside of a desk and now its running at 42 celcius. Thats not good is it? Considoring the fact that the only application running is IE. I took the hood of as well and that didnt do much.

I'd like to know at what point it does set on fire though.

My AMD 3000+ AthlonXP Barton is currently 38 degrees C. It's been running for quite a few hours.

I wouldn't worry about that sort of temperature.

Start worrying when it gets over 70-80.

I used to have a amd thunderbird 1200, and that ran idle at around 60.

My amd cpu runs at about 70degrees (85degrees in summer), it will ocassianlly crash when it hits 90degrees in games buts it is still going stong after 3years.

My 2600 Barton sits at a steady 50something degrees. Stock cooler. If i pound it hard it will go up to 60. Thats the worst it ever gets. No big deal, really. Never crashes. Most stable computer i've ever owned.

The generic 'CPU temperature' or 'ABS-II' temperature?

While some people here might be boasting 70'C, they are likely referring to ABS-II, which would imply a 'CPU' temp of about 50'C.

It's like the kilobits/kilobytes conversations. If you don't specify the context in which you are talking, all your numbers are meaningless!

my AMD64 3500+ (according to system properties, I assume that's what it is - I know nothing about AMD CPUs) usually clocks in around 37-39 degrees. I have bog-standard cooling afaik.

My 2700+ sits around mid 50s, high 50s to low 60s under load.
The important factors in the temperature are speed, core type, and that you're running standard voltages etc.
Things like thermal paste and the HSF on it matter in what's "good" etc too.

They're rated to 90C. Start worrying in the mid-high 70s.

Hell, my Pentium-M 1.7 (Dothan) is running at 37 at 600MHz atm. Push 1700MHz and it'll jump to high 50s straight away, mid 70s under load. You got nothing to worry about.

I've a Barton XP3500 and have observed temps from 35 to 39 deg. On my old motherboard it would report the temps incorrectly and say it was about 10-20 deg hotter than it really was so don't take the values as gospel.

would any of you dare put silicon based (usually white) thermal grease on the bottom side of the cpu? (ie, all over the pins, and the centre part)?

my vapochill book says to do that to avoid corrosion or condensation buildup beneath the cpu.. but im scared to

No, because it would void my warranty with AMD...

My mates 2400+ TB runs at around 40-50 no OC. My 2500+ Barton runs at around 40-60 with a 400mhz OC on stock cooling. I've never had problems and neither has he.

wouldnt corroded pins void the warranty too though?

(although, it would be one f***ing job and a half to clean the s*** out of the cpu pins aswell as the mobo pin holes)
