Having been recently unemployed and thusly played to death DoA3, DoA:Ultimate and Soul Calibur II I'm looking to buy a new beat em up game, preferably while the sales are still on. Any suggestions worth mentioning or do I just wait for SCIII/Tekken 5?
Oh don't bother to recommend any of the recent Mortal Kombat games since they make me want to throw my consoles out the window, or alternatively beat someone to death with a controller in some bizarre geek finishing maneuvre. |

What console have you got?
Apparently Guilty Gear XX got a release here for Xbox and PS2. The series is supposed to be one of the best 2D fighters around but I've never played it personally. If you've got a PS2, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution is good fun as well. |

Buy an arcade machine, or even better, make one. I have a USB controller set up to my TV computer running most of the old arcade emulators, does that count? Neo Geo FTW! What console have you got? All the latest generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube, and I have a GameBoy but not a DS) |

Character's can have up to three different styles at the same time and the more styles you have the more moves you unlock.
- 70 fighters (40+ are celebrities) - 30 licensed sound tracks - 20 venues - 10 game modes - Storyline is awesome - Choreographed moves look stunning. Oh and it's available on all 3 systems (yes and that includes gamecube). last edited by Booyah at 17:30:02 24/Jun/05 |

Yeah, Def Jam Fight for NY is an awesome game, lots of fun. Even if you dont like rap its still awesome, its just got so much attitude you can't help but love it :)
If you want something fun and light hearted, try Kung Fu Chaos on XBox. Its not strictly a fighting game like DOA3 is, its more like Smash Brothers Melee on Gamecube, or if you ever played them, the Powerstone games on Dreamcast. But its awesome awesome fun and really entertaining. Its all done in a style of a dodgy old Hong Kong Kung-fu movie and makes fun of Titanic, Independance Day, and a bunch of other movies, its pretty cool. Its also pretty cheap now cos its been out for a while. And I know you said not to mention Mortal Kombat, but the new Mortal Kombat game, MK: Deception is a really, really good fighter. The fighting system is nothing like the Mortal Kombats of old, it resembles something more like Soul Calibur now, with multiple martial arts styles per character, styles that use weapons, and generally a much more indepth system of moves and combos and stuff. It also has interactive arenas like DOA3 does, where you can punch people into/through parts of the level, and multi-tiered levels where you can knock people off rooftops onto the ground below and jump down after them. Deception is also packed full of extra content, with a single player adventure game, a multiplayer Puzzle Fighter style game, and a version of Mortal Kombat chess. Dont beat me with any controllers, but I reckon its prolly the pick of the fighting games out atm. last edited by Khel at 18:13:16 24/Jun/05 |

Tobal No. 2 (Tobal No. 1 was awesome to but compared to the enhancements of tb2 i can't recommend it over 2)
Tobal was the first real full 3D beat em up where the 3D wasn't faked. You can move all directions over the combat zone not just in different 2D panes simulating depth for a particular move. The controls are simple, and a verteran can get stomped by a beginner (a key requirement of any good fighter in my book, so it's fun for all) but the advanced grappling and recovery/counter options are awesome. Well worth your time and the single player adventure game gives great longevity and is more than just 'now fight 2 guys at once' type thing of other fighters. I agree with Khel, even though you said not to mention it, Mortal Kombat: Deception has my vote. I really had a great time playing that game.
