During my travels around the internet i stumbled across this video on the peta website. for those that don’t know PETA, thay are a radical vegetarian organization . you can visit there web site here http://www.peta.org/ . being a vego myself i can appreciate what these people are going on about but i don’t really endorse the way thay go about it. I don’t believe that there is anything wrong with humans eating meat, i just have a problem with some of the methods that we obtain the meat. Anyway this is a video that shows how KFC in America farms the chickens that go into the bucket. Its hosted by pamela anderson and its an interesting watch though not for the faint hearted. http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=pam_kfc_long&feat=pam_kfc_long&pos=fp4
again, i don’t support peta, although i do agree with there views on ending the torture of animals, thay have a far to unrealistic view on vegetarianism BTW. in Australia Steggles provides the chickens for KFC and thay use a similar method to that which is shown in the video. |

PETA are as bad as any other extremist group - they twist things around until they have "facts" and use scare tactics.

If we stop eating animals then they will rise above us on the food chain we can't have that. |

Yes former KFC "chef" here too.
The chicken is pretty dodgy. Although I have eaten it a few times since, I was strictly a burger boy on the very few occasions that I frequented KFC. But as long as you know that the gravy in the Potato and Gravy is scrapings from the bottom of the fat fryer mixed with water, and the chicken is pumping more steroids than Ben Johnson at the 84 Olympics, then it's up to you. Having said that, I must admit I have eaten it recently. I feel dirty. Hold me. |

it is rather cruel but like the others said, thats just the food chain, given the chance im sure an uber race of chickens would gladly breed us for kentucky fried human. furthermore, humans are meant to eat meat, its unatural not to do so.

yer, i dont have any problem with people eating meat at all, i just choose not to, and have a squeeky clean bowel for it :). but i was just wondering, would any of you have a problem with paying a fraction more for your chicken, beef and dairy if it ment that the animals didn’t suffer on the way to your plate ?. one thing i hate is judgmental vegetarians thinking there somehow better than everyone else.

I think by definition every vegetarian thinks they are somehow superior.
ps. In my experience, most people can't stand vegetarians becuase they are essentially fusspots with attitude. Atleast I understand where the concept of halal food comes from (it was a religous public safety measure) even if today saying pig is dangerous is kind of a bit whacky. |

i dont have any problem with people eating meat at all, i just choose not to Tehn you'd be about the only vego I've ever "met" who doesn't have a problem with me eating meat. I've not spoken to a single vego who didn't say something like "omg, how could you eat those poor animals? You're so cruel, blah blah blah." Yet, they don't have a problem with lions, tigers, etc, hunting down antelope and eating them. Now why is that? |

actually tiny, there are a few things which point to humans not really being built for eating meat. the shape of our teeth for example is more condusive to eating plant matter than sharp canines of predominantly meat eaters. also, carnivores have a markedly shorter digestive period than us and a large steak will take a long time to break down, effectively sitting in our stomachs for longer than it should.
if there is anyone here who could speak on this who knows more about it ie. med student/dietician? edit: btw, i love meat. last edited by z0r at 13:51:29 18/Jun/05 |

So it's a fact that the gravy is made from the scrappings of the fryers? I work at HJs and when I was getting trained to clean/filter the friers the manager commented that it looked a lot like the gravy at KFC. So if that is fact then that is pretty disgusting and I'll have to think twice about eating in future. Then again I hardly ever eat there anyway so I think I'm safe.

hey, corn fed chicken is good, why wouldnt corn fed humans be also.
That video was pretty nasty, the beak thing sucks. I gotta say, those guys were awesome at throwing those chickens into the crate. The slits are barely wider than the chickens and they barely missed. You think about how much it would suck for the birds, but imagine working in a big ass chicken hut. If the birds suffocate on ammonia and s***, so do the workers. It would be stressful as f***ing (haha, obviously I meant 'f***' but Ill leave it there cause the typo made me laff) with all the noise, constant wing flapping and generally depressing environment. Im sure that if i worked there id get pretty insane and stop giving a f*** about the chickens too. last edited by Qmass at 18:08:25 18/Jun/05 |

But as long as you know that the gravy in the Potato and Gravy is scrapings from the bottom of the fat fryer mixed with waterwell, that's the basic technique to making a sauce... deglaze the stuff on the bottom of the pan with some liquid (anything from water, stock or wine) and then use something to thicken it... |

Hey did anyone see A Current Affairs story about the hormones they pump into Chooks to make them grow faster??
Anyway they had these two chicks (1 on roids the other normal) that they filmed over 6 weeks etc. By the end of the 6 weeks one was twice the size of the other and can only be described as an 'uber chook'. Ive now officially sworn off chickens for good, cos I dont want that f***ed up chemical s*** in my body. |

The s*** at the bottom of a deep fryer is not either. You can hardly compare the nice brown action in a fry pan to whats in a deep fryer. |

The sauce you get on a nice steak at a restaurant is just excess meat scraps chucked in a massive pot kinda like a 'stew'. Anyway its nothing new, still tastes good eh.

actually, its not at all.
You are talking about jus. Jus, for steak in this case, is beef stock (made from beef bones (with some but not a whole lot of meat which can be roasted first or not, boiled in a pot with vegetables, non starch - because starch makes the stock cloudy will contain nine times out of ten onions, carrot and celery as well as other stuff, its called mire poire) and then the stock is reduced many times over until when you pour it out on a plate it holds its shape rather than runs everywhere. It is IMPERITIVE that stock is made from bones, becuase the collagen in the bones is what thickens the jus. Its obviously very diluted in stock hence boiling it down to remove most of the water. Its why when proper jus is refridgerated it turns in to jelly and youll often get jelly forming on the top of a bucket of stock when its been in the fridge for a while. Having been an aprentice I know about making stock  edit: Forgot to mention that before the stock is reduced to make jus its strained so that its only the liquid. last edited by Qmass at 02:22:39 19/Jun/05 |

well its not jelly. Its a liquid/runny/sauce when its served. Anything above pretty damn cold will melt it. For this matter, most 'decent' gravies for eating with roasts will also turn into jelly when refridgerated. Gravy is a similar thing. Its just thickened stock/drippings. If I can remember its called jus lie in french. I have totally forgotten the french terms for most things now because I havnt worked in kitchens in over a year now. Cooking f***ing blows, im back doing science again :(
Jus is seriously awesome. If you dont try it you are stupid becuase most good food is kind of weird stuff. Soup is essentially based on the same thing as jus. So its the same thing. last edited by Qmass at 02:57:11 19/Jun/05 |

Yeah this PETA group are also are up in arms about australian sheep farmers using millsing(cutting the skin from around the sheeps ass) to keep the sheeps rearends clean and not get fly blown. They have successfully stopped a number of stores in the US from selling aussie wool products.
/meanwhile thousands of children die in 3rd world countries from disease....sad. Whats next? Animals having more rights than humans? |
