For those that missed it, the 7:30 Report have posted a transcript of their segment that was filmed at August's MPU and which aired a few days ago, titled "Computer game violence challenges censors". If you are interested, the 12 year old, Andilizer, that they interviewed to try and show how shocking it is that children have access to violent games posted in this thread saying his parents dropped him off at MPU and gave him money to attend. Which sort of says to me, that if anyone is concerned about violence in games, they should be looking at what parents let their children view, not working at hindering adult access to the material. Thanks to BSS for the link. |

Too bad they didn't report indepth any of the findings from that study... It's a good read, and basically puts the whole argument to rest... |

I thought this bit was rather good: PROFESSOR KEVIN DURKIN, UNIVERSITY OF WA: There have been a number of studies conducted which have usually been designed by people who believe that violence in computer games will cause children to behave aggressively. |

Unfortunately I missed Monday's episode of the 7:30 Report, and am less than pleased that they (allegedly) substituted footage of SoF for that of CS. As the episode mentioned, the government is accepting submissions on the legislation from all concerned parties. Here is our only chance to "stick it to The Man", so to speak... We're scrambling to collect signatures for our petition (located at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ozgamers) before the October 31, 2001 deadline. Further information on the campaign can be found at http://www.ozgamers.cjb.net Signing the petition only takes a few seconds, and remember, it may be another 5-10 years before we get another shot at changing the legislation. Stand up for your civil rights, people. |

Yeah, if anyone wants to know, the study they refer to is: "Computer Games and Australians Today" Written by Kevin Durkin and Kate Aisbett © 1999, Office of Film and Literature Classifcation ISBN: 0642704619 I got my copy free from the OFLC after writing them a letter for a Year 12 assignment. You can probably find a copy at a library though. |

You cant close the case on what computer games does to the human mind. It still has to be FULLY researched, as we still have no idea what is really happening. We have a 'best guess' of whats going on, but I bet it's wrong. I belive that there are, just like anything, harmful effects if you dont play moderatly. We need to know what these effects are, how to deal with them and how to prevent them. We also need to know what good comes from games. Then we can focus on promoting these and bulding a better race.... :D |

CS is MA15+ I think. If your parents let you play it, they are legally responsable. |

No law against playing MA+ games or watching MA+ movies at below 15 years the MA+ rating is just for places selling it. Society bases too much on age anyway. It's a convenient medium, but not a very accurate one. |

Typical and Pathetic! f***ing 7:30 report is turning into a Curret Affair with it's sensationalised gutter Journalism. Games with Violent looking red sprites dancing on the screen would have to be the easiest target for poor quality Current Affairs programs. Good work Kerry! You unprofessional Tool! As soon as the report gets ripped to mpeg or .avi let us all know cos I missed it :/ |

heh, not monopoly money proper money. I practically used all my pocket money to buy my computer. I've saved up for a few years now.... think about it, if i get 15 dollars a week $15 x 54 weeks in a year x 3 years = $2430 obviously i didnt save ALL of the money i got but alot of it anyway. |

As long as guardians accompany children they can see MA15+ material at the cinema. If i purchase MA15+ material my child can watch it. Just like i can purchase R rated stuff for them - I'm not sure i could take them in to an r rated movie though. The issue comes up of allowing other people's children to view MA15+ material. If you have Mary's kids over for the night, and whack on some MA15+ movie, it's not illegal - it's just not nice. This is why LANs don't get in trouble - yet. The legality of it is at point of sale. LANs may soon have difficulty though as they could be seen as culpable for allowing minors to be exposed to MA15+ material that is present on other people's machines - there's lots of talk in the draft guidelines about 'exposure' to material - which is why we either ban anyone under 18 from LANS once/if an R category is introduced, or get parents to sign something at the door :-) more administrative fun! You may want to include concerns about children at LANs and the LAN admins responsibility for material being 'displayed' on lanners PCs at a LAN in any submissions you send to the OFLC. If WE aren't commenting from a LAN perspective on the draft, absolutely NO one will be! |

Actually, When i bought halflife at Harvey Norman a while back they just sold it to me. No parent or guardian needed. When i bought Deus Ex, they needed a 15 year old to accompany me to purchase the game. So I got my dad to come with me, he has no problems with violent games. I guess it depends on the person that sells the games. |
