The Inquirer have a recent article informing of AMD's intentions of dropping the much loved Socket A platform.

To many of us - it's an end of an era. To others its an event thats been a long time coming. All the same, the old Socket A sure gave Intel a run for it's money, and will no doubt be missed by many of you out there in Interwebland.

Just as a reminder, last December saw AMD update to a great new website design that allows users to organise a faster cpu replacement for themselves! It's a great idea for those who are unfortunate in having bought a cpu from a store that has gone out of business. If your cpu is no longer made, but still in warranty AMD will offer you 'current market value' for it, which is better than nothing. Actually - nothing is what your machine becomes without a cpu :/

This makes sense somehow - to AMD at least

Socket 940 has an effective data rate up to 12.8 GB/s.
Socket 939 is up to 14.4 GB/s.

Socket 940 requires the use of registered RAM. Usually more expensive.
Socket 939 does not.

Socket 939 is best for: gaming systems and just a general PC.
Socket 940 is best for: servers, workstations or if you are going to end up with a lot of RAM (3GBs+).

im quite happy with my 939 related purchases, and it's definetly going to be around for a decent amount of time to come.

yeah, 939 is the way for the future for AMD, well, as far as i can see anyway.

now just to get the money to upgrade.
