One of those fun telemarketer types just called up my place, and just as I was about to say "sorry, busy" she sprung the news that she was calling up regarding some new policy changes that are apparently in the works for Brisbane regarding Sunday shopping. As a result, I ended up sitting through the survey, getting asked a bunch of questions the general gist of which was "do you think Sunday shopping in Brisbane would be a good thing", to which I answered "hell yeh!"

Personally, I can't believe that we still don't have Sunday shopping. Working full time makes it very hard for a lot of people to get to the stores, and having to slug it out with everyone else on Thursday night or even worse, Saturday, isn't anyone's idea of fun. Sunday shopping would (in my mind anyway) alleviate a bit of the stress and hopefully distribute the shopping load a little more evenly around the week.

Anyway, if they call you up, make sure you do the survey and tell them Sunday shopping is where its at!

I think the main arguement against Sunday shopping is that small businesses make their money when major retailers aren't open i.e Sunady... But yea, shops on Sunday is a good idea :o)

Just as long as there are rules in place so that poor buggers can't be forced into working sundays when they don't want to.

And I don't see the problem with shopping as it stands now. I do most of my shopping on a Monday or Tuesday night at about 8:00 on the way home from work. Grocery shopping that is.

Consider that I have lived in three states.
Brisbane: I lived there for 8 years, and left. (choice)
Launceston: I lived there for 8 years, then left. (job)
Both these places have the old "No Sunday trading because of small business."

The reality is that you don't buy stuff on a Sunday. Thursday night shopping is usually the go in both places.

However, I now live in Canberra.
We have Sunday trading (and in some places 24 trading).

And the really nice thing is that you hardly ever see a chockablock supermarket. Also, you find that people tend to spread their shopping out.. with most people going on Friday night or Sunday.

It's great. Then again, small shops don't exist in Canberra :P

There's Sunday shopping at New Farm, and the City.

They started doing surveys there because Sunday shopping at Coles was so damn popular.

But who is happy to work the Sundays to provide these services?

Not having a weekend sucks majorly, and I know, working in a store 7 days a week.

I dissaprove, Sunday is traditionally a rest day, let it be that.

People have 73 hours during the week to do their shopping as it is. Those of you who can't get an hours shopping stuffed in there somewhere arn't doing it right. I work six days a week now, i'm sure as hell not working Sunday. When there wasn't late night shopping people cried. Once we had late nite shopping people cried because of not enough time on Saturday, so they lengthened Saturday shopping. Then people cried because there wan't enough time during the week, so stores get to open till 9 every week night now (guess which night is still the busiest?). Now they want Sunday trading. Who wants to bet it won't stay at 6 hours or so? Why don't we just go to 24/7 trading, and all the corner stores can close now, and save themselves the trouble.

I don't think it's a good idea. Sunday is my only day off usually and it would totally suck if my 6 day a week 11 hour days got turned into 7 days a week 11 hour days even worse if it became 24 hour.
I may not like this idea for selfish reason but hey who in this stupid excuse for a world isn't selfish

whatever like anyone would take what i thought into consideration anyway

Hmmm..the problem with Sunday, and then by extension 24 hour shopping, is that someone has to work those hours. It isn't a question of someone being forced to - someone short of cash will. In any case employees will of necessity work much more flexible hours, the structure of the business etc will ensure this. Then you have a whole heap of other effects which extend through society..some are good, some are bad, few are understood.

For instance some studies have shown nighttime work puts stresses on the body that you don't get used to over any time period. Otoh it would allow people working in such areas to fit in more work hours around study perhaps..although it's debatable whether this is a good thing. There would be less crowding at tourist destination on weekends..but goodbye to the Sunday lunch with Mum and Dad ;)

You will also find that a lot of small convenience shops and even 711 frachises disappear from the suburbs in preference to larger more centralised stores. This is good if you have a car and can drive. Very bad if you have no car or are drunk :)

Even today the proliferation of 711 and McDonalds et al has sounded the death knell for the Milk Bars of yore. Just think, you could get a milkshake made of milk, and a nice Hamburger with bacon and egg and fresh lettuce and tomato and mince that had been formed into a patty on that day, ensconced twixt bread from a bakery. I didn't realise until now how I took that for granted..there are none left around here.

Without belabouring the topic I think it's not such a good idea..we really do not need it. There are enough 711s etc to tide us over during supermarket closing hours, and it is good to have a day when everything is shut and we can be guaranteed of having time to do something different.

Trog's momentary convenience does not quite outweigh the benefits of a nice quiet Sunday in my mind, I'm afraid :P

I haven't read many of the posts above (mainly because theres too frickin many of them) but has anyone noticed that things always run out on Sunday? And if its something essential like toilet paper, you end up paying waaay too much from an independent store? Some of the price differences between independent grocers (or whatever you want to call them) and supermarket chains are massive to say the least.

Sunday shopping please, I'm not a Christian (or any religion for that matter) so I don't have any sabbath day, well come to think of it, every day is a sabbath day for me. Besides, all those people complaining about it being a sabbath day or whatever, how does it affect you? I mean if you're at home lazing about like you should be you wouldn't notice would you?

Coles down the road is less than 10mins. walk. If I had to shop, they are open late (at least til 7) everday.

I don't think I'd have a real need for Sunday shopping, but I still want 24/7hrs, for times such as this.. (note time of post). :D

let me tell u the story of my fist visit to Melbourne (i live in Sydney)

We did all the tourist things, went drinking at night, and thought "lets leave the shopping until our last day there" (u guessed it...a Sunday).

Walked out of the motel at 10am that Sunday and thought...s*** the place is quiet...too quiet...

The whole city was friggin DEAD. No cars, no people. Just 2 stupid Sydney people walking around.

HOW BACKWARD CAN A PLACE BE ? NO SUNDAY TRADING !!!!

The main people bitching in this thread are those who work in retail. Understandable. This can be bad or good for you - IMO extra hours are good but only by choice - just nominate that would would rather not work Sundays.

But you have to realise those who cant access stores during the rest of the week.

I study fulltime and work part-time - Which means I pretty much have no spare time to leasurely shop. Sundays would also stretch the horrible packed shopping centres of Saturday and provide access for people who have to work or study on those "Thursday Nights" and Saturdays (Both extremely packed shopping times). Its quite hard being a student and a worker - Spare time is quite small and when you do get it its past 5'o clock. I can't remember the last time I actually met the 4pm bank closing deadline.

Sunday shopping is a good idea.... however I'm not sure if you remember but a while ago the new rule came in that the major stores (super markets and the such) should stay open till 9pm every night. Now as useful as that is to the general public, all the small and large companies alike were quite upset...
mainly because they had to pay the staff, maintain the store ... there are quite a few expenses and I'm sure sunday shopping will bring around the same vibe.
However... it'd be pretty f***ing useful to have every day a shopping day when u have to work stupid hours every day of the week.

Even if they did implement Sunday trading, those of you who work in retail may not realise that you are only able to work a certain amount of time a week. I doubt they'd get one of their current employees to take on extra work (correct me if I am wrong). If anything its more likely to create more jobs, but we couldn't do that could we.

Not a single person at my work is willing to work Sunday's. Not even for half an hour at the srart or end of their shifts.
