12 hour shifts are not fun. Also depending on the operator and the type of pay you get you may have to pay for gas and other expenses, everything is pretty much tax deductable though.

I'm looking forward to the free laptops, mobile phones, tips, chix and brix launched at my head.

Actually both black & white and Yellow cabs are short on cabbies and are in high demand for drivers. The course actually used to be around $600 (at yellow) but they weren't getting as many applicants for their liking. So if you've got your open's and is looking to earn some big bux on the weekends then why not pay $133 for a taxi driving course including first aid and a mini defensive driving course at woolongabba yellow cabs and you'll have your taxi license within a week, provided you show compentancy in the various assesments.

haha no... the cab company doesn't pay for it.

if you're working for another person who leases/owns the cab he pays for fuel, etc etc, but that just depends on the owner.

My dad owned a taxi for as long as he's been working I believe.
He owned it in New Zealand and when he came over here he bought one. :)

It used to be so much fun to get into a taxi and slip in "How's your night?" "Good" "cool... my dad's out driving too.. I think he owns a taxi" "Oh.. what number?" "650" "OH! PAT! Yeah" *turns off meter*
:D

He's such a social bugger, thinks he's funny :P

But he sold the taxi a couple of years back... sold it for $300,000 !!!!! Bought himself a house at Depression Bay and now he drives yellows up at redcliffe. :P

The only bad thing is he'd work days which means up at 3 and home at 3. And on his days off (which were few and far between, he'd even work 3-12 on sunday) he'd still get up at 2am and make himself a coffee.

I'm not a cabbie yet, but i soon will be.

I'm a mechanic's hand for Yellow Cabs. I love cabs. The taxi industry is like one big family. Everyone is everyone's mate, and once you're in, you rarely ever get out and stay out.

I'm still on my P's, got a year to go then i'll have my opens so i can get my taxi drivers licence (HDL). I've never had a crash or a ticket and i'll do a full defensive driving course, and they should let me in early.

Which base do you drive for Booyah?
What are the pay rates like over there?
Night driver/day driver?
Casual/Full time?

Most cabbies don't do a full 12-hour shift.
Most only end up doing a 10-hour or so.

Friday and Saturday nights are different, some cabbies (usually the gun drivers) end up going from 4pm to 8am. Silly nutters. But then again, $300 for 14hrs of sitting on your arse in someone else's 4L Ford Falcon ain't too bad.

if you only make $300 on a friday/sat night you've gotta be doing something VERY wrong

Mr Hardware i actually haven't driven yet and i'm still yet to decide who i'll be driving for. I'll prolly go for the 50 50 commission on the sedans as i'm still not experienced enough to go on set pay. Alot of my dad's mates own taxi's and licenes so i'm thinking of working for one of them. Yeah rubba chicken i'm still at QUT and i'll most likely only work 1 or 2 nights on the weekend. I've never sat on my ass driving around for 12 hours but i know if i can get enough for a days work i'm turning back to base to drop off the cab. By the way at yellow you're allowed 16 hour shifts max as opposed to previously being 36 hours or some crazy jazz.

Take some time deciding. Drive for a few people if you like, just find whoever suits you better.

I'll prolly go for the 50 50 commission on the sedans as i'm still not experienced enough to go on set pay.
You're a wise man.

Usually owner/operators are good, but just be careful, they can be dodgy too, especially on insurance and doing deals under the table, which can be both in your favour or against.

Yeah, remember tiredness beats money every time. We had a cabbie fall to sleep at the wheel in the maxi and completely flattened a keep left sign at a fair rate of knots. He said, if that was a person, the person would not have lived.

Take it easy for the first couple of shifts. We have had young blokes come drive for us and three nights later they've smacked the back of a Magpie on a rank because they've been too worked up. Don't try and pull a big 600 on your first shift, knock off early.

at yellow you're allowed 16 hour shifts max
if you turn your computer off, you can't be tracked. If you are wanting to pull a big single, turn your computer off from about 10pm to 2am and thatll allow you to do a 20-hour shift.

We got the maddest taxi driver last nite from the Valley. We got him to drag a pulsar next to us (but lost) and he's like "alleh-ew-yar". Was f***ing funny and we're like "Ya know what would be cooler - if you turned off the meter!" and hes like "alleh-ew-yar"

haha it was gold. We gave him a tip he was that mad :D (go B&W!)

alleh-ew-yar ? meaning what ?

I was going to go with B&W but they wanted a 3 year open license so i went yellow. Now that i have yellow i can also get my B&W. By the way i accept nothing but $50 tips.

i had a odd cabbie one night ...
from city to whereever was the destination that night ...

indian bloke... we got in and he started talking about how he was a singer and stuff.
me being drunken idiot said great mate could you break one down for us.
he goes one step further.. within a second he reaches down side of his seat, pulls out a lyrics chart. had one for both of us. presses play on his cd player and out comes this thick, thick indian accent. the lyrics of the song were "im a fair dinkum aussie, yer yer. etc etc . kinda repeated that a bit. sung about kangaroos and koalas and stuff.

kinda listened to the required amount without being too rude then gave him a "thats good mate" what else do you do.

he then reaches over and pulls out piccy of his wife and him shaking hands with jonny howard. very proud aussie this bloke ..

but anyhooo. in relation to driving for a living. i just started couriering again (after 2 1/2 yrs licenceless) after expenses (fuel, running costs etc) take home about $800 ....$1000 some weeks can be more. thats 10 hr days monday to friday.
i say this has gotta be better than night work and those sougghta hours.

Let us know when you start driving booyah
and let us know what number.
Ps the AU1s are s***
the AUIIs and AUIIIs are nice
the BAs are the KING
and the Camry 4s are fun cos to get anywhere you need to rev the crap out of them, and camrys have the sweetest sounding engines, especially around 4500rpm in 2nd or 3rd with your foot flat to the floor, they just sing with this amazing raspy purr.
Camry 6s are good, torque steer!
Wagoons and 5-seaters aren't everyone's cup of tea, just stick with a 4-seat sedan at first.
Oh and by the way, the cars are 5 and 6 seat, the taxi industry refers to them as 4 and 5 seaters because of their passenger capacity apart from the driver.

Cabbies are the best
There are so many funny c*** cabbies
I f***in laugh every day at work cos the cabbies are so piss funny
Calling each other old woman and trying to run each other down
and blasting their horn at each other, smacking the corner of the cab whilst the driver is doing a tricky reverse
f*** they're funny
they get me good s*** like phones etc
however there is the odd arsehole
we fire them
but otherwise damn the cabbies are cool
we have one cabbie who we call larry
short for larry perkins
cos he drives like hes in the bathurst 1000 and also he did drive in bathurst in the 70s
and he does burnouts in the yard on the gravel
hes a nut
and all the other cabbies say
oi larry
have you taken your pills today
and he says
why dont you shut your mouth you f***in arsehole
and everyone laughs
its funny.
huuh.

I usd to drive for yellow about 6 years ago when i was at uni.

Back then the cars were s*** the hours were s*** and the money was s***.

Usually would work a 12 hour shift for $50-$80 in your hand.

The only good things about it were that there was always lots of work and that it was easy as s*** to avoid paying any income tax, once the GST came in that went out the window so I found a differnt s***kicking job.

And the airport rank was s***.

You like this thread, yes rolo?

TMWNN, what were you driving? f***in EDs and EFs and s***?
Yes those cars were s***.
Nowadays an average day shift will have you earning $150 before tax a day for a 5:30am to 3:30pm (10hr) shift.
Fri/Sat Night shift is a good old $300 before tax. Oh and the GST s*** has settled down now, it aint so difficult now.

Airport rank is still s***.
