Haven't heard anything about this although there is a big thread over at Overclockers in the TV/Movie section.

I dunno what to think of this just yet.
I've watched the entire series (well up to ep 16 or 17 or something) to me it seems really hit and miss. Some episodes are pretty cool and other just appear to be an SG1 episode with different characters. If you like SG1 you'll probably like this I guess |

Its pretty crap I reckon, they've pretty much written the same cast, renamed them and then hired new actors....
Concept is good, could be done alot better. |

I've quite enjoyed the first season (it's not "finished" in the US, but has aired in its entirety via Canada)
The difficulty with the spinoff is that it's coming after many many years of its predecessor, so expectations are pretty high to begin with. The advantage though is a well-established mythology base (The Ancient could do anything), and a top-notch post production crew. Some episodes were a bit tedious, but on the whole, I'm really looking forward to season 2 in July! As for Australian audiences - ch7 are apparantly going to begin airing SG:A immediately after their run of season 8 SG-1 is finished (few weeks to go). Even better news is that the AFL states are continuing to run two episodes on the Thursday to catch up - they were years behind and now, season 8 starts this week! |

Thoroughly enjoy it. It's a bit odd the timeline of it though as it runs parallel to SG1 from Ep 12, yet you see events happening on Atlantis that haven't happened on SG-1 yet an vice versa
SPOILERS: ^^ ( *cough* zero point module *cough* daedulus *cough*) |

That's because we're dirty naughty people downloading episodes instead of watching it on tv in the USA - they're getting the episodes in the order they're meant to be shown.

Haven't been watching SG-1 for a while, what's the premise behind this show? Do they set up another SGC with that other Stargate that they found on the southpole?

jackson figures out that another symbol is needed to open a hole to atlantis. they do that and send a bunch of civilians (mainly scientists) and some soldiers through to take up residence in the city of atlantis. they encounter new technology, allies, enemies etc.

The premise is that they find the lost city that the Ancients came from (Atlantis) but its in the Pegasus galaxy, and they only have enough power to open the stargate to there once. So they open the gate and send through a huge big team of scientists and soldiers and all sorts of people and equipment to explore the city and setup a basecamp there. And then the show is set in the Pegasus galaxy and is all about what happens there. They introduce a new big, bad evil race called the Wraith that almost wiped out the Ancients and stuff, and generally its pretty cool.
Its basically Stargate: Voyager. |

Yeah, part of it is them trying to get back. When they get there the city is running on really low power and all their ZPMs (Zero Point Modules, ancient power source thingies) have run out, so they dont have enough power to open a wormhole back to earth, only enough power to open wormholes to other places in Pegasus. So theres an ongoing thread of them looking for ZPMs to power up Atlantis, as well as trying to stop the Wraith because the Wraith feed on humans and have found out about Earth and want to get there to feed on everyone because there aren't enough humans left in Pegasus to sustain them.

haha stargate voyager.
Personally I can't wait for sg:a but don't think it'll be as good as the original, even the original is quite s*** now that jack's stuck in HQ, they all just sit around and do nothing pretty much. Is there any sign of the asgard in atlantis? Also how can they only have enough power to open the gate once? Jack built some generator thing that let them open the gate to the asgard home planet, why can't they just keep using that? Sounds like plot holes out their asses. |

Its pretty crap I reckon, they've pretty much written the same cast, renamed them and then hired new actors.... Actually Brett, you'll find that the majority of the Atlantis actors have been in SG-1 in minor and even major roles for some episodes. I find it quite enjoyable, more of the same entertaining stuff really. |

The instrument jack built was only built for one time use.
Season 1 of atlantis is ok, it has quite a bit of promise. |

The instrument jack built was only built for one time use. bzzzt sam figured out how to make it work again, so by that she SHOULD be able to make it work again and again and again etc etc etc you get the idea. Look for the episode with 2 samantha carters in it, one with long blonde hair who was married to jack in a parallel universe. Between them, the 2 sams got the thing working again by doing some stupid thing with the decay rate of the nadquaid (yeah I know that's not it's name). |

Eric I'm well aware of there previous roles etc, but it still doesn't mean that what they've done is just duplicate characters from SG 1 and then stick them in a different galaxy.....

Yeah, the character archetypes are similar in ways to SG-1, but I dont think thats a bad thing, the dynamics between the characters in SG-1 are part of what makes the show good.
Shepherd is basically the wise-cracking military "Jack Oneil" type character, then you've got the Rodney Mckay, the nerdy scientist (albeit, much more sarcastic and cynical than Daniel Jackson), you have the token alien who has joined the team to save her people, but then theres new interesting characters too. Like the scottish doctor whos name I've forgotten, hes a pretty cool character. Then you've got that russian scientist guy, Dr Zelanka (sp?), and Lt Ford, who while at the moment is kind of a bit bland, at least adds some more action into the mix. I think the show has awesome potential, I mean its only just nearing the end of its first season so its only really still finding its feet, and already I'm hooked. It took a bit to warm up, but around episode 10 or so (the two part one, with the storm) it really picked up. |

At first, when I watched SG with Jack Onieal I kept thinking maguiver. Now when I see him its all Jack Oneil. I've seen little bits of Atlantis and it looks interesting. Will they air it here after SG or during SG?

Is there any sign of the asgard in atlantis? no and i doubt the asgard have ever been to the pegasus galaxy otherwise they would have helped find atlantis. my friend has seen the entire first season (20 eps) and he said the last couple of eps are awsome but also sad. |

Apparently there are 2 maj0r races in Atlantis, The Humans and The Wraith, with possible hints at a third, maybe the antiants. I Have this crazy idea that the antiants are from the future, that traveled back in time to seed the various races for some reason or another, so they arnt really all that old. Crazy I Know.

Yeah, you find out a lot more about the ancients in Stargate: Atlantis.
*** MINOR SPOILER *** Theres one episode where through events I will not disclose, one of the Atlantis members ends up going back in time 10,000 years to when the Ancients still inhabited the city. At that stage, one of the ancients is working on a time travel device, and its all new and stuff, so I dont think its something they had messed with previously (as they would have had they come from the future). As for seeding other races, yeah, they're responsible for some of that. Actually, you find out more about that in the next couple of SG-1 episodes (as in, the next couple that are due to be shown on tv here). **** END SPOILER *** Theres also another "faction" that crops up throughout the first season of Atlantis. They're like this militaristic race of people who are hell bent on finding a way to stop the Wraith, and the Stargate people (or the "Atlanteans" as they come to be referred to by the other races they meet) piss them off and get in their way, so they keep cropping up as a kind of secondary minor enemy. Some work is going to have to be done expanding the mythology behind the show though if they want it to have legs. Sure, they have their main enemy in place (the Wraith), but they're going to need to add more depth to the show if they want to have enough material to draw upon to make more interesting episodes. It didn't take long for SG-1 to start introducing things like the Replicators, the Tokra, and the Asgaard which gave them a lot more depth to work with and a much richer mythology. Stargate: Atlantis though just seems to be so far be about Ancients and Wraith, which is cool, but they're going to need more. |
