I saw a discussion on Whirlpool about Telstra's alleged upcoming policy on download quotas for both cable and ADSL: an automatic 64kbps speed-cap after 10GB.

It's creating a bit of a stir,.. with heaps of people confirming it, along with its share of skeptics. I usually dismiss these things as usual whirlpool rumours, but I really wouldn't be surprised if it were true. With other ISP's such as iiNet providing 8Mbps DSL (in selected areas) with a decent quota, would people finally jump ship?

Might finally be time to change ISP's.

While that sucks I reckon it's better that they actually tell you how much you can use instead of capping people willy nilly at different download amounts.

I always thought that was the plan in the first place? It just never happened. I cant download 10gig in a month so it doesnt bother me.

They cant cap you after 10 gig. It says MAY cap you, not will. So lets find out shall we. Telstra are tight f***ers anyway, so it wont suprise me. Dark Ages company.

any idea whats happening with the new optus plans?

assuming there is something new, I figured that once the free off peak downloads finish they'd be upgrading/changing plans in some way?

couldnt see anything on whirlpool

Big woop, Telstra are planning to enforce a policy they had in place since the start of the new plans. Chances are the only reason they said "may" is because they knew they didn't have the system running to actually do it. Let all the leech kiddies jump ship to iiNet and the like, clear up my BPA cable for those of us who just want true high speed broadband :p I had little trouble falling within the old 3gb cap, so 10 is plenty enough for me.

Optus should just keep their off-peak thingy, that'd be ok with me.

I like the way things are at the moment, but telstra must cop some massive traffic in the last day or two of people who have been tight with the 10GB and have just decided to go mental in the last few days of the month. I guess an immediate cap would stem this influx a bit.

I'm with Tls cable and if it is capped then i'm sticking with them as i can't get optus cable and i can't get adsl due to the cost of installation.

without iiphone, the change from bpa cable to iinet adsl doesn't seem worth it to me

i was just looking at cable plans 2 weeks ago... i though the 10gig cap then reduced speed was part of the plans ?? or is it people on old plans complaining ?? ffs 10 gig is heaps anyways. i had no trouble a few years ago staying under 3gig. meh.

iiNet is just getting better and better :]

1500/256 for $49.95 (phone bundle). Once they upgrade my speed I'll get an automatic increase to whatever speed my line can handle :p

Last I heard Telstra isn't the first ISP to cap the speed after reaching a limit!

Once again you miss the point kat. It's not at all about who caps after a set limit, but the fact that the current telstra setup is changing, and that people who used to rely on being able to comfortably go for 15, 20, or more GB a month now have to pull back on the download reigns and get back under 10GB. It's not about other ISPs, it's that this specific plan on telstra is changing from a "may be capped" to a "will be capped, and then raped by dialup speeds"

I would still happily switch back to bigpond cable if it was available in my unit block. I don't do anywhere near 10gb a month but prefer the faster download speeds. iinet looks great but seems to be more expensive given that you have to convert your landline phone to them (is that correct?).

that is my understanding of the iinet plans as well trog. I too will stick with bpa cable, simply because a) 10GB is heaps for what I want, and b) there is a good file server setup and good gaming servers available which I can play on free of quota usage. I just which more people would play in the TFC server ;) of and of course c) 10% discount because my home phone, mobile, and cable are lumped together into one of telstra's deals.

You don't need to have your phone lumped with iinet.
I have 1500/256 ADSL and my phone is with Telstra.

If you want the 8000/512 though, you DO need to bundle your fone with iinet.

I recently switched from Bigpond, though it had more to do with reliability and service than download limits and speeds.

We signed up with iinet a few weeks before the new plans were announced just for the faster upload speed on their dslams. As soon as the new plans were announced we switched over, and get 800k/sec downloads and ~100k/sec uploads with Iinet, we didn't mind switching phone over because a) we hardly ever use it, and b) we were still saving money switching over anyway.

Hmm, I think I might try to swap over to iiphone then if that's the speeds we can expect.
