I'd heard the admins thought they had left sufficient gap to find a venue for the next lan, but in the end they couldn't locate one in time.

lighten up kat, i get s*** thrown at me all the time, i laugh because it's funny

last i heard about the qgl s*** was the technology park and some very appealing figures as far as public liability goes. i'm pretty sure venue is fine, you just need admins with the will to restart this old car

I had a talk with khel about it; apparently no-one seems to be all that interested in spending the little free time they have to organise QGL at this time.
So...
Bottom line is... no QGL yet.

The biggest problem of QGL Lans is the size they would be.

Big lans need big venues and big venues have lots of rules and massive costs.

I did some ringing around last week for venues that could hold 400 people in what they call a classroom configuration.
1. There aren't many that will hold that many. (not only does it need lots of space but power as well).
2. Lots of them demand you leave at a certain time and those that don't won't let anyone "sleep" there, Fire Department regulations or some such
3. They will expect you to hire there staff for security and directing people and stuff. Making them quite expensive.

Small lans would be much easier to find venues for and run.

ps. I am in no way an admin of QGL or anything, I just wanted a lan to happen etc etc and the venue is the sticking point.

Heaps of other organisations including brisbane and around australia are having lans like once a month or atleast every 2-3 months...

For a large lan organisation (QGL) with a high rep to barely have lans ever, I find it pretty embarrasing!

I think QGL should setup a knotch and try to satisfy their returning customers (us the gamers).

age group 15+ to allow all people to play these rated games... SIMPLE

or

Case scenario: If we have to pay alot more to hire out a hall with security and all that sorta bulls***, how much would it cost for the entry fee....

Please tell... it might not be that much...

I was never in charge of it, I offered to do it because I had spare time. Then my spare time ran out due to uni commitments and nobody else continued looking, so nothing happened.

The biggest problem with running another QGL isn't a venue, its the fact that most (if not all) of the admins dont have the time, energy or inclination to run big lans anymore.

No exis is right .. if thats the excuse then yeah .. get out of the road and hand over the controls

If only qgl was like other club/interest groups with a big membership so you could elect new executives when the old ones stopped doing what was needed (cos everyone burns out eventually when doing hard work for free)

yep, so appoint a few new admins to get the organising done.
Then on the day, the old school admins that actually have a clue about how to run a lan can take back the reins.

I've worked in all sorts of 'event management' capacities and I'd be very happy to help, but as far as all the technical side of things with regards to power and network infrastructure I'd have zero clue.

Appoint a panel of people all with relevant experience and contacts and it could easily get off the ground.

zactly what we did with MPU - we've been without a venue for 9 months....

I am in spidz's shoes - altho not event mangement, I am a good co-ordinator blah blah, I got zero 'techincal' skills (as we can all attest to, with my newb threads).

However, a f***loads goes into orgainising a LAN....

Plus MPU isnt 400+ and isn't overnight/2 day LAN

I am not here to s*** on QGL admins, just want a lan, so I can fly up there and meet some of you f***ers :p

Well QGL would probably still be around and going strong if people just did a few simple things that the admins asked many, many times.

1. Cleaning Up after yourselves, and help clean up when you leave.
2. Having you puter set up correctly
3. Paying to get in..
4. Settling down on the leeching..
5. Cleaning up.
6. Cleaning..

I remember seeing a few posts by admins after lans saying how it sucked so much to clean up after everyone and how it sorta made hosting the lans painful and joyless.

Now the admins have moved on, why bother setting up a LAN where heaps of people will leave rubish everywhere, even though bins are everywhere. Where people will blatently break the rules and so on. Who can blame them for not wanting to give up there spare time.

After the last ex-QGL lanner has died off many generations from now, it may start to dawn on peeps that QGL is nothing but a web site, no more no less.

CY 2102AD: And yet I can still picture some 105 year old peep still posting in the expectation a LAN may still be organised. :D

not going to happen folks, if they were going to "appoint" some new admins, i'd be among the first to be picked

i've been helping for years here and there, as well as being involved with other large lans. would you seriously attend a lan run by "einstein" ? =)

the qgl lan is dead in the water guys, get some initiative and build your own lan and reputation up from scratch, it's not that hard, just a lot of planning and f***ing around

i'm helping with yerongalan at the moment, trying to get it off the ground

who knows? it might turn into the next qgl if we get enough people turning up, we certainly have enough terabytes of "incentive" for people to come.

A lan could still be organised under QGL auspice.

All it needs is a venue, public liability insurance and a little work to organize the actual day.

The hard parts are
1. A lack of interest by the current admins to do the above
2. A lack of interest by the current admins in giving the reins to those who will
3. So many people wanting to go
4. Not so many people willing to become admins and do the hard work

I suggest if you are serious about wanting to help get a lan going then email qgl@qgl.org state your case how you can help, prior experience. Maybe even just start doing stuff like finding a venue and public liability insurance quotes.

Being an admin is no more then who is willing to do the work.

Maybe if enough of you show interest they might call a special general meeting or what the f*** ever they are called and get some of you new people involved etc etc

I'll be having a LAN at my place in 2 weeks on Saturday. Need about 6 more people to at least have about 14 players for some good multiplay action.

Strictly no CS either. Be some Desert Combat and anything else worth playing I guess.
