Internet Explorer 6.0 is now available for download from Microsoft. Anyone brave enough to test it should post their comments for the rest of us who are sitting back waiting to see what happens!

Ungoliant,

There's an option there to download it to install later. a little tick box sort of on the right somewhere when doing the 'customise' install.

My install failed twice, then rebooted with out asking me if it was ok to do so.

Now the AGN Bar works so I'm happy.

It's ghey-ed up the mouseover script on the MPU site though. It now appears somewhere out of place, like not near the cursor.

It sucks that you have to use that stupid installer-off-the-net thing though - I just want to download a 50mb self-extracting thing and thats it.

Had no problems with it in XP, and the few hours that I've used it under Win2k I haven't had any problems either.

I've been using the beta for quite awhile with the only problem being the Explorer file-tree bug (mentioned earlier). Otherwise it's been more stable than IE5 or 5.5.

But it $hits me that MS have screwed around with the installer again. I can't just do a download of the files here at work because I don't have the latest NT service pack on this PC. And I don't even want the NT version - all I want is the Win9x version so I can take it home and try it there first. Stupid MS!

Mine shat itself just after the 9 meg mark....it died at the mediaplayer setup bit.
i didnt find any option to download the full thing =( can someone please point us in the right direction if there really is an option to do a full download then install, rather than a web install

I've been using it for about 2 weeks under Winblows 98 se and havent had any problems. It seems to be more stable than some other versions.. though it does seem to start up a bit slower.

I would help out, but 'a previous install is pending requiring a reboot...' no chance in hell of me rebooting for another month, did the 'oh s*** my accounts expired' monthly reboot yesterday, and ie already rebooted me once today :(

When i saw it, as i said earlier, i was going through the 'customise' install and on the right was a little click box, something like 'download this to install later (full)'

That's interesting... I just wandered over to a Win2k machine we've got running here and tried a download there. When I tried running the setup it didn't give any customize options - it just wanted to do the straight up 11Mb install.

At least the old web install let you pick which OS(s) you wanted to download for and customize whether you wanted to install or just download.

Well i don't know what your problem is. I clicked on the link above. then frantically clicked on anything that said 'download' as i was dieing for a piss.

When i got pack it's downloaded 508,240 ie6setup.exe. I run that it says i gotta agree to some huge policy statement which i just clicked. It then gave me a choice of: (from memory)

Normal Install (which included dildophic tools like Outlook Express)

and

Minimal - custom (which let me chose not to install outlook express- and had the click box i'm talking about)

SURELY SOMEONE ELSE HAS SEEN THIS OPTION TOO?

That doesn't help if it stops at 9 MB. They want to not have to download when you install it, but download a complete self contained download.

I saw the click box but it dies downloading it. it get to 20MB and says it can't download the rest.

natslovR I get an error message saying I don't have NT 4 Service Pack 6a installed when I try and run the install stub on my work PC and then it stops (and I can't install the service pack). If I try it on the Win2k PC here at work the install stub works but I get no customisation options, it just downloads and installs the Win2k version. Are you doing your install on a Win9x box?

I want to be able to download all three versions in one hit like the old installers did. And BTW, thanks Jim lotsa help :)

sKryBe,

I'm running Windows NT Version 4.0.1381. I can't imagine that i installed many service packs.. cause i'm lazy.

I was running ie5.0.2 something prior to this as the upgrade to 5.5 never worked for me.. it always whinged about something.

Setup has determined the following components were not installed: -

Inter Explorer 6
Oulook Express
Internet Somthing or other
Something else

I then reset and it coems up telling me the previous instsll wasn't finished, do it again, same thing happens.

Reset, pressed cancel when annoying window telling me about my crappy isntall coems up.

ofcourse Internet Explorer 6 is running fine.

I am dazed and Confused.

The icon is a crappy colour blue too.

The install is kinda dodgy I have tried it on 5 pcs so far. And so far none have gone on perfectly first go.

Firstly you have to untick VBScript support (it will autodownload it once its installed anyway). But even ignoring that it comes up with either install errors (ie. files are in use errors) or it doesn't clear out the "runonce" reg stuff properly ending up with you being continually told you didn't complete installing it (hit cancel and its fine.. basically its whinging that it couldn't install VBScript support).

It works ... but I wouldn't bother just yet.

Do you people really need IE6? If your current browser still does the job then why bother upgrading to some s***heap that doesn't?

oh, a stunning new feature. which happens to absolutely spastic, is pics. well resize themselves to fit into the ie window you have open.

the size dont matter, it will go as big or small as your window.

to view its actual size you have to wait for a lil toolbar to pop up on the bottom right of it.

sigh.

OK, I finally managed to get the damn thing! Did the download at home on a Win98 box and it worked perfectly the first go, even gave me the option to select which OS I wanted to dl for etc. So I grabbed the Win9x, WinNT and Win2k versions in one go. Maybe it's only the win2k install stub that's fuxored...

Anyway, IE6 is much more stable than IE5 or 5.5. I could consistently crash IE5 & 5.5 (a couple different ways) but they've finally stamped those bugs out. It's probably crashable some other way but I haven't found it yet. And it's smaller than ie5.5 was so maybe it should be called 'shrinkware'? It seems faster but that's not through empirical testing. And to be honest the small improvements are useful if not earthshattering - and if you don't like 'em you can turn em off!

Peacekeeper, have you downloaded IE5.5? Have you seen how big that download is? If you start out a windows install with the default (ie4 I think) then it's better to go straight for ie6.

I think abandoning Netscape plugins was inevitable. How many netscape only plugins do any of us use? I for one don't use any (that I can recall). We've just abandoned cross browser compatibility here at work because the number of netscape users is dwindling steadily while the IE users increase.

I know it pisses off some people but [shrugs] it cuts development time significantly.

The problem wif installing IE 5 or above on Win2k is the fact taht, as u guys have noted, u only get one option, INSTALL, nothing else. Whereas on win9x and ME, u get all the options. Why it is like this I don't know but when I was building IE kits wif the IEAK, it told me that and I thought, well this is pretty s***. Anyway, that's why u don't get the options in win2k. It's pretty s*** but that's the way it is.
