Something those of us using the free version of AVG antivirus will need to know.
On December 31, 2004, full support for AVG 6.0 will be discontinued. Virus database updates will be released for AVG 6.0 until January, 31, 2005.So, either pay for it which im seriously thinking about or go somewhere else. AVG Professional Single Edition - maximum protection for a single computer.2 years is good for USD 33.30 in my opinion. Ive never used the pro edition, is it the full bloatware version or is it still the great sit in the background dont chug down and forget about prog?? where are you going to go or what do u recommend? |

I bought the V7 Pro and it works great even on a "Server" software (I run Win2K Server as my desktop PC).
$33 USD for 2 years is cheap compare to the likes of Symantec etc. And it seems to work just fine. It's not a bloatware, scan quite fast as well. I recommend it. http://trog.qgl.org/up/avg.png last edited by Opec at 09:53:21 31/Dec/04 |

Yes, compared to the other offerings out there it certainly s***s all over them. The current version of the product that my employer distributes is DOS based which makes life difficult normally, and even more so when you add AV software to the mix. McAfee was good for a while for us, then it steadily went down hill. It always reduced a system to a crawl and had a number of wierd bugs.
Norton was pretty much the same though its even worse now. AVG does use a sizeable amount of RAM but that is acceptable, it doesn't seem to put anywhere near the load on the CPU that the likes of NAV or McAfee do. And I'm yet to see any of the wierd bugs with MS-DOS applications that I've seen before. And I've not had it fail to detect a virus before either. last edited by sikfalcon at 09:54:58 31/Dec/04 |

PC-Cillin is like the worst AV ever made HOWEVER looking at that list I think those results may be by popularity and not by actually how good they are.
I saw some stats on Trend micro the other day and they are a taiwanese based company and they are by far the biggest company in taiwan. Every single Asus notebook and mainboard is shipped with PC-cillin as well as a few other MB manufactures as well. |

I haven't found anything wrong with nortons, macafee however did decide to delete my entire system folder one day a while ago (not system32, it was a win9x machine) for no apparent reason other then because it could. I scanned the files again later and they were all clean even though macafee thought they were infected. dongs to you my friend.
I can't remember what I didn't like about avg, was it that even if you disable it, it's not really disabled? does it keep scanning s*** even if you tell it not to? |

Yeah pc-cillin shipped with my brothers asus notebook... and it was borked from day one.
Email scanner thingo would take 100% cpu, even though he had never even tried to use email on it.. then the f***ing thing wouldn't uninstall (uninstall app would crash). Fun times. |

And what makes you think that they didn't just get a better deal from trend saving them $$$/year without any care to weather or not the product actually works
