Games Domain have a piece on whats coming in 2005. With a snippet about Qauke IV...
"After destroying the Strogg's collective brain and leader -- the Makron -- the Strogg have quickly regrouped under a new and more powerful Makron. However, with the Strogg's planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time you're not alone. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal. Quake IV delivers you deeper into the heart of Stroggos." And two officially released pics..looks like the team at Raven might have something cool for us next year. I like the mention of 'vehicles' being at your disposal. http://www.users.on.net/~dwegner/Pics/Q41.jpg http://www.users.on.net/~dwegner/Pics/Q42.jpg |

Let's see what kind of comments will likely be posted by the cs kiddies:
1. Too dark 2. Looks too plasticky 3. Doesn't look scary 4. If it doesn't have a gravity gun just like in HL2, it sucks 5. Quake 2 sucked It's perfect though, the less cs players purchasing the game, the less of them on the Quake 4 servers. This can only be good! ~ All that aside, the Doom3 engine coupled with the Strogg universe ... seems like an awesome combination. I'm interested to know to how integrated the storyline is, and what form it takes. I immensely enjoyed the PDA aspect of Doom3 as I really got to feel what the NPCs went through, but that was a somewhat passive approach to the storyline. Not everyone liked it though ... seems like alot of people were after a no-brainer arcade-style game or hollywood-type blockbuster. Standing and taking in the atmosphere was taken badly. From what I remember from my Quake 2 days, most players enjoyed the atmosphere the game created with its new technology, as opposed to craving a storyline. The heavily-supported multiplayer aspect kept the game alive for years (Q2CTF @ powerup anyone?). I really hope this lives up to its name! If it doesn't have story, at least have a complete and moddable multiplayer component! egads McKinley Revival memories ... |

(Q2CTF @ powerup anyone?)...ahh the memories...every night of my life on there. awesome times indeed. egads McKinley Revival memories ...the carnage and chaos in that map was great especially when they removed the BFG from the centre wet area. If Raven can make Q4 half as much fun MP wise as those days I'll be a happy man. |

especially when they removed the BFG from the centre wet area Yes that BFG! The funniest moment I've ever had with Q2CTF was when a team-mate hastily charged his own base and quad-BFG'd me (his team-mate with FF off) at point blank range and splattered his own guts all the way down the base ramp :) Anyway, someone posted on bluesnews about a glitch in one of the screenshots. jpg artifact or wtf? http://www.powerup.com.au/~boldajis/images/q4_artifact.jpg |

1. Im not a cs kiddy
2. It looks dark but I bet after the backlash (ductape mod!) of D3's excessive darkness, they wouldnt dare make it that dark again. 3. It does look plasticy but that has never really bothered me. 4. I hope it doesnt have a gravity-gun. God help them though if they dont come up with some original gameplay concepts. 5. I dont love q2 but I did like it. I think it was a very good game, much better than Q1. |

That artifact might be in the pic caused by a strobing red light and just captured at the wrong time as the light was moving across that surface maybe?

What the hell. It looks like they copy and pasted the marine from the magazine scan below into their own 'exclusive' shot. Where the magazine cuts off the screenshot on the left is where the glitch line is on the 'exclusive' screenshot on Page 1 of this thread.
But Why? http://quake.gamevision-network.de/images/q4/09_04/Quake47.jpg By the way, if anyone is interested, the original magazine shots can be found here: http://quake.gamevision-network.de/forum/thread.php?threadid=560&sid=5f133c1259b0fcaf188f817bdf837f1 More here: http://games.tiscali.cz/clanek/screen.asp?id=1923 Edit: Another possibility could be that the game had a glitch (it's in development of course), which they cut out and didn't include in the magazine scan. last edited by parabol at 01:13:42 29/Dec/04 |

They should just make q4 ctf, exactly the same as q2ctf No they shouldn't cause then retards will complain its exactly the same but with prettier graphics and proclaim even the smallest variation from the original to be heresy. You can't keep q2ctf fans happy. |

looks pretty cool. it's kinda funny seeing everyone holding tight to thier older game of choice, stubbornly refusing to accept the new game unless it meets thier old game's standards... wouldn't catch ME doing that! ;D

All the people clamouring about "I hope it has great multiplayer !!!one" - its great to see you guys gearing up to be disappointed already and I look forward to reading your complaints when the game is released without multiplayer! Quake 2 (like Doom 3) was a single player game first and foremost - from memory it didn't even frickin work when the game was released? I assume Quake 4 they're focusing on the story of the Stroggos some more. How bout you don't get your hopes up just yet so the rest of us don't drown in a torrent of Doom 3-esque whinging - I don't think I can go through it again! |

When a developer releases screenshots in a teaser-esque fashion, publishes interviews such as the one in PCPP recently where they boasted about the multiplayer features, great vehicle action and awesome atmosphere they can't honestly expect the hordes of Quake fans not to get slightly riled up. I mean, with how much publicity first-day sales are getting lately, hype seems to be key to successful game sales.
If they didn't want us to get our hopes up and instead wanted us to look at the game through new eyes, without expectations they'd be damn-well better off creating a new game world instead of using the quake lisence. How bout you don't get your hopes up just yet so the rest of us don't drown in a torrent of Doom 3-esque whinging - I don't think I can go through it again!B&. |

Can someone summarise all the inside goss on this for us You can read the magazine article here: http://quake.gamevision-network.de/forum/thread.php?threadid=560&sid=5f133c1259b0fcaf188f817bdf837f1 If anyone wants a higher-res version of the magazine article that is easier to read, drop your email here and I'll send it. I'm not sure of the legality of it, hence I won't dump any more of those pics in this thread. They pretty much said that they are focusing on adrenalin-pumping action rather than horror. The article explains it all. Edit: The article is around 3 months old and has been covered in a previous QGL thread. last edited by parabol at 15:14:21 29/Dec/04 |

I call 2004 THE YEAR OF THE COLON. I'm planning a post soon which lists all the titles that came out with a colon in the title (ie, titles that they're trying to 'brand' so its easier to pump out expansions and sequels). |

Every industry becomes bastardised and exploited, with a steady drop in average product quality. Though in my opinion, one thing separates the gaming/software industry from the others. Software can be developed with a much smaller startup cost than many other products (visit Sourceforge for thousands of examples)
You can start off using free or low-price tools to code/develop, with time as the only major cost (if you have plenty of it, who's to complain?). If the project takes off, you team up with a publisher, then invest in better tools and work on it full-time. The more hype your software creates, the more money and offers are thrown at you. Although the positive side is that new developers with good ideas can end up releasing their original software to the masses, more often than not they are swallowed up by a big company (EA anyone?) and have to play by their rules ... destroying the creativity which spawned their company/software in the first place. Hence the burst of originality, then the predictable wave of sequels. God damn. (Edit: The above is an opinionated, simplified view) last edited by parabol at 06:52:20 30/Dec/04 |
