Topic: Tidal Wave hits Asia!

An underwater earth quake is the cause of a Tidal wave hitting the coast of Asia today. The death toll is approaching 4000.

DEATH TOLL CONTINUING TO RISE AFTER EARTHQUAKES AND TIDAL WAVES IN SOUTH EAST ASIA
The full extent of the unfolding earthquake and tidal wave disaster across South East Asia is almost impossible to comprehend. The death toll is now approaching 4,000. Sri Lanka and India appear to be the worst hit, but 6 countries in total have been seriously affected. The disaster was triggered earlier today by a huge undersea earthquake, off the northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The quake measured 8.9 on the Richter scale, the strongest in 40 years and the 5th strongest earthquake since 1900 it was followed by powerful after-shocks and generated a series of major tidal waves. Hour by hour the death toll is continuing to rise, this is the latest on casualties as we understand them. Sri Lanka and India appear to be the worst hit. There are reports more than 2,000 have died in Sri Lanka and 1,000 in India. Hundreds have also been killed in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Maldives. Thousands across the region are also unaccounted for. There is no information at this stage on Australian casualties but the department of foreign affairs has set up a hotline for anyone worried about friends or relatives overseas. That number is 1800 00 22 14.

Fark thats big...8.9...I heard that the south pole also had an 8.8 a few days ago that was felt in Hobart!...maybe mother earth is just adjusting her skirt at the mo.\

I was in San Fran two weeks after the big one in '89 and while we were driving down south thru Santa Cruz we had a 3.2 quake...I thought I had blown a tire until I realised it was the road that was wobbling and not the car. Didn't really know what had happened until the radio reported the quake in the area we were travelling in. They are scary events..I can't imagine what a big one would be like.

this is pretty cool to happen right after christmas too.. :S i don't reckon it will be the end of this though.. there was already one close to us like a week ago but the lines didn't go vertically or something hence not causing a tidal wave and just an earthquake.. otherwise we woulda been farked

its horrible to see and hear whats happened in asia. I dont wanna be an antzy pants but just for PC -> tidal waves are caused by the tides, tsunamis are caused by undersea tremors or earthquakes

Right, if I said "OMG I BET THEY'RE ALL DEAD" I'd understand your point..

However, I'm saying, I bet they are fine...
Stop being a bunch of pessimistic losers, fine if you wish to assume the worst, by all means go ahead, don't let me stop you, however, I think they're probably fine.

Whatever.

if you were in the situation you'd be different.
Yeah uhm, actually no, but of course, you'd know if I have been in any situation where it's possible someone I know might be in trouble and/or dead, and how I reacted.

"I bet" is a figure of speech.
It's effective to saying "I'm so sure of it, that I'll put something on the line if I'm wrong"

Had I said "I'm sure they're ok" it would mean the same damn thing, it was 4am odd in the morning, like I was paying particular attention to choosing my words so wisely.

Yeah, let's get up in arms over what I said which essentially said positively that they're ok when other comments float around that have harmful intentions.

gee i really feel for these asians, what a shame. not

My auntie and two young nephews had just gone to shri-lanka for a short holiday. We haven't heard from them yet.

There's quite a few pictures from Thailand over here Pretty horrible.

My sister was off to the Maldives in June, guess that'll be cancelled now, and that is what will cause a significant amount of long term hurt for a lot of these communities, just how long it will take tourists to return.

Everyone needs to settle the hell down.

I think people are pissed off because Loki was only betting a measly $50 in his original post. I'm sure if he bumped it up to $100 or maybe a few $1000 things would have been different. When you gamble, you really shouldn't start with low bets, you must go all out first time or not at all.

I remember a while ago an old friend told me this very important saying and it goes a little like this...if you

actualy, its teh fact that he has no simpathy about it. im sure there fine is the same as "sheel be right".

the statements lack compations about the subject, someone who has had there car reposesed doesn't want to hear "sheel be right" or "i bet you 50$ that you will be fine"

im sure your motives were good loki, just the way you said it was abit blunt

FYI, being out on the ocean in a boat is a pretty safe place to be. So long as you keep a sufficient distance from the shore (sorry, had to do it). Tsunamis on the open ocean are pretty safe, they travel real fast in the deep ocean, but aren't much higher than normal waves. When they hit shelfs they slow down and get taller and more dangerous.

That's because google's image cache predates tsunamis :)

Also, I don't know why people still call them tidal waves, as they have nothing credible to do with tides.

A tsunami (from Japanese 津波 meaning wave in port or "harbor wave") is one or a series of ocean surface waves that occur after a large earthquake (having a vertical component of movement), seaquake, volcanic activity, slumps, or meteorite impacts in or near the sea. The term tidal wave is sometimes incorrectly used in place of tsunami but the two are different and in scientific usage tsunamis are not related to tides.

dude you've got no idea, I stayed on patong beach - kinda freaked me out a bit.
if a tsunami hit patong beach you would know about it, the whole town would be basically destroyed because of the low beach wall and the fact that its not very high above sea level to begin with.

Well we have tried a few times today to contact (Emily) over there but no mobile comms or SMS seems to be working? We can't contact her parents as they are in Melbourne somewhere and I guess they would be trying to contact her anyway. WE are hoping that she was doing what she said se would be a week or so ago when we saw her for Xmas drinks prior to leaving for Sri Lanka. She said her and b/f would be hiking most of their stay, which hopefully means they were inland and at some elevation when this s*** went down. And not anywhere near the beachfront at all. fingers crossed.

The numbers are kinda getting meaningless at this point, and the fact they rise exponentially every day just adds to that.

They should just say "tens of thousands dead", leave it at that, and concentrate on the relief effort. *Then* give us the final figure when they have it.

i saw on the news a guy carrying his only son in a blanket.. was a little baby.. babies would of had no chance unless on high ground and kids virtually no chance even if they did no how to swim they would not of had the strength to keep swimming and would most likely swim against it instead of go with it and consume energy

On the kids thing - there is no way most of them would have had any chance of survival. But that would be the same for a lot of people who couldn't swim/elderly people/people with disabilities, etc. On top of that, the initial impact of the wave would have caused a lot of head/neck/back injuries from people getting thrown to the ground or getting hit by debris. Scary scary stuff.

Do you know the sick thing about all this... that there is a 31 MILLION dollar lottery jackpot tonight. WHo the f*** needs 31 Million dollars? I bet i can think of a few million people who would benefit more that one Australian. I think that OZ Lotto should donate say 20 Million at least to the appeals and reduce the prize money to something less. No doubt there would be feral AUstralians out there that would kick up a stink but meh - i think it's ridiculous that we offer that amount of money to a single person when there are so many others so much more in need of it at this time.

Also, seeing news about asia and then people out buying fckloads of s***e at the myer stocktake sales... meh it is just such an eye opener as to how different two countries can be. (Not that i was not aware already but i'm sure you understand what i am getting at).

Auslotto is a private, non-government, business organization.

It's they're money to give away how they please. The more the offer as a prize, the more tickets they'll sell.

aw when ever it is... but still private organisation or not - it is a ridiculous amount of money that one person could not possibly use in a lifetime. It is the Australian public that supports said company so if the Australian public rallied to have the funds or portion of donated then there may be some consideration taken. Maybe they would sell more tickets if the money was to be given to an appeal?

Hahah go Grunt.
I'll tell you why I can joke you f***en prat. It's as follows: every day people die worse deaths, in both bigger numbers and far worser manner,(and the homeless in your rich homeland USA), than this, yet you don't blink an eye. It's like when DI died (ahah), every one periodically starts f***en bawling. f*** that. Selective sorrow falls on my deaf ears.

Hah, if anyone really gave a flying f***, they would be doing all they could, everyday, unpublicised, for everyone, not just CNN publicised victims. f*** off with that showing compassion s***. You ppl are startled, nothing more. It's pathetic. Stop swapping sides, at least stick to the capatalist pig side you have chosen/been bred into, no holds barred, then at least you posess resolve.

To have compassion is to want to relieve people of suffering, 30 million isn't anywhere near enough money to do all that much, and even people with compassion I couldn't imagine giving 30 million dollars away.

Do you know the sick thing about all this... that there is a 31 MILLION dollar lottery jackpot tonight. WHo the f*** needs 31 Million dollars? I bet i can think of a few million people who would benefit more that one Australian.
f***. thanks for the reminder - I was going to donate some money to unicef or something in aid for sri lanka etc but now I'm just gonna go buy $100 worth of lotto tickets.

you just cost them a donation by reminding me of the lotto you hearltess bitch, how can you sleep at night with that on your conscience?

actualy, if they advitised it, they could say something along the lines of "the next lottery will be half as big, half of the sales of lottery tickets will go to the rescue effort in asia."

probably get twice as much tickets as usual, because there is still the "i can win 15mil" but also, yes, i will buy for the people.

also the chances of $31million dollars going to one person is pretty slim isn't it.. i'm not very learned on the lottery.. but that money needs to be split between other division 1 winners + div 2 and so on.. if someone did win $31 million dollars then good on them and it's there choice to do whatever they like with it.
if i had the money i still would prefer to help out in a hands on way, rather then giving my money and not really seeing anything happen, being an armchair sportsman.

Interesting, with a jackpot so huge, I wonder what the cost would be to buy every single possible combination in the draw..

Which would ensure you win every division at least once.
I'm thinking it would be quite a few million dollars to do (and usually the cost would outweigh the reward) but in this case, hrmmm.
cbf working it out.

Finally heard from our friends Mum and her and b/f are ok...for now. Amazingly they spent a bit of the day on the beach and then went on a hike into the hills and thats where they were when the s*** hit.

They are ok, but they are staying up in the hills as there is some water and some food, but they will try and get out of Sri Lanka asap which will be no mean feat considering the chaos that is down at sea level, let alone trying to get a plane out of the place. But thankfully they are alive and amongst the lucky ones.

just for the record, it would cost roughly (well exactly) $4,072,530
to pick every single game once. (assuming 50 cents a game, which you can actualy get for less if you play systems, but we wont go into that) which would guarantee you winning the first division and every other division as well.

So going on that if you had the money it would'be worth it, assuming no one else wins, which they probably will.

Well it's already been up your ass so I don't want dirty seconds.

^ err, yes NF, as in, the odds of you winning division one are next to nothing, particularly winning it alone.

I don't know -exactly- how many numbers there are, but I know there's somewhere in the order of 40.

That makes the odds, from six choices out of 40, that ALL six come out, even out of 40... PRETTY s***.

In short, that means I can't -accurately- work out how much it would cost, so what would be the point.
Yes, that's right, I still know enough about the game to know that the odds are useless.

CNN are reporting the figure is at 80,000...this is just a devastating thing to happen, apparently a third of the dead are mainly children. I was watching BBC1 last night and they had this Geologist expert on saying that the force of the quake was equal to or in excess of a million Hiroshima A-bombs. I hope the world community can dig deep because its going to take Billions to recover from this disaster.

i feel for thies people, but "As soon as the brown water started coming to the sheltered pool area, Mr Williams' mind returned to 8o'clock that morning when he felt the earth move.

"I saw the brown water coming and thought `a river's overflowed' . . . then I thought `Christ, that tremor'."

The next thing he saw was a stunned-looking couple being washed through a window while lying on their bed."

its hard not to smile...

Lottery winnings aren't taxed, fyi.

I thought that if you take all the cash in one big payment it is taxed, but if you take it over a span of years it is taxed less?

Also I would be awe struck if the Lotto organisers decided to give the 31 million to the relief effort, that would tripple? Australias initial donation...

Also arnt the chanes to win the lotto 1st div, assuming 40
numbers, 40*39*38*37*36*35= 2,763,633,600 to 1 ?
