Topic: When did this happen in HL2?

Something I just realised, I never saw the scene with the blue tentacle thing nailing the Combine soldier. You know the bit, it was in nearly all the videos they released, and the screenshot of it is even on sierra's website here. But I never actually saw it ingame, does it happen? Did anyone see it?

it wasn't.. as stated in one of the hl2 threads i think someone said they took it out because that particular monster was kind of pointless and boring to fight

also the welding gun. remember the one where you could weld metal together, for eg. weld a better rollcage onto the buggy?

it worked really well. i remmeber playing with it in the 'beta'

hey I remember hearing about that welding gun, you mean it's non existent? You see why people warez games? because they're so much better than the final product ffs. (not that I've seen the juarez version so the above statement is pure speculation)

I think that tentacle thing was called the "hydra' section..they pulled it for some reason.

Another thing I noticed in HL2 was the absence of mirrors in the houses/bathrooms ect... I thought it would have been cool to walk up and see Gordon all decked out in his HEV suit after so many years. I would be surprised if Source couldnt do mirrors ect..ala Doom 3.

i was just mentioning this to a friend today, where the f*** is this bit... its not there which is a shame cause in the video i saw it in it showed the ragdoll physics at its best.

it also looked like the kind of monster that hl had.. you know the 3 claws that you had to sneak past then turn on the big beam and zap his ass... i was really looking forward to something like that again.. but nope.

It's called the physgun and Valve have hinted in the past that it'll be added to the full SDK when it's released. So expect a mod that integrates it into the main game at least.

Also, that blue tentacle is called the 'hydra' and yes, it was removed because it was an insta-death monster that was boring/frustrating/stupid as all f*** to actually fight.

I wish people would stop complaining about the bits that were cut. They were all removed in order to make it a more enjoyable game; with better pacing, more balance and more fun. If I had a dollar for every forum post or friend I've talked to that complained about the missing hydra scene I'd have $12

I remember an example of a "puzzle" that got removed also, you're above a group of combine soldiers and you shoot out a rope with your pistol swinging a big piece of 2x4 down that takes them all out. Thats gone to, and I was looking out for it.

Psycho: I imagine there weren't any mirrors for the same reason that the player model wasn't textured. Valve wants the player to be Gordon and to look however the player imagines him to look. That or they couldn't be stuffed texturing the Gordon model and so removed mirrors to avoid showing it up :)

(Of course that first theory doesn't explain the photo in that Doctor's lab of all those Black Mesa scientists including Gordon)

Also doesn't explain how theres a picture of Gordon on the box, and in nearly every promotional picture out there...

But yeah, I'm not complaining that the scene was cut, I'm sure they had a good reason to cut it, I was just suprised because it was one of the things that stood out in the video as really cool looking, and then I realised it never happened!

As makavelli was telling me there were a few things cut out, the hydra, trap town which has the swinging 2x4 and other things.

I must say, this game had an initial *wow* factor,.. perfectly laid out by the brutality and atmosphere in City 17. It drew me in and layed out a foundation for something that never came.

The interesting and fun bits (eg: grav-gun, striders) were evenly balanced by the less interesting parts that I wished would just end, for example the hovercraft scene and Ravenholm. I almost emailed and thanked Valve when those sections were finally over.

I also already knew what was coming in the section under the big bridge since an almost identical scene was presented in Painkiller.

I'm still trying to pinpoint the exact underlying flaw with this game while the CDs gather dust.

They probably should have left it in the game. the only thing i didnt like about hl2 is that their werent enough aliens. there was like head crabs, head crab zombie dudes, ant lions and that was about it.

the first one had so many more aliens thats why i liked it.

all of the E3 vids were just vids showing off what the game would look like and the physics, not vids from the actual game. its was explained in the big gamespot write up about valve

I thought ravenholme was cool. Playing through it again, and setting zombies on fire and shooting saw blades at them is such fun. I liked the traps.

i loved shooting those blades, did anyone end up trying to shoot them at combine soldiers?

try this once you've finished it.
SPOILER!!! (highlight to read)
'Once you've finished the game open the console then type in map map d3_citadel_03 then hit Enter. Once loaded wait for your gravity gun to supercharge and pick it up then type in the console map [any map] and also enter impulse 101 and you should have the super gravity gun to play with on any level!
also the combine soldiers dont cut in half. i carried one to a combine level and all they do is get thrown back.

for example the hovercraft scene and Ravenholm.
The hovercraft scene was just a touch long, but it was tense and incredibly fun; it shouldn't have been much shorter. Ravenholm on the otherhand was SHORT -- How could you think that was too long? It was more enjoyable than all of Doom3's better bits put together and actually challenged you to conserve ammo for a change of pace.

People continue to focus on the disappointments that fringed from the e3 videos and forget this is really one of the best FPSs out there. It made a few pretty epic strides, but for the most part it honed in on everything that made HL1 so great and refined it down. It had less aliens than HL1, but half of those 'aliens' were just fought in the exact same way as each of the other aliens and the other half were seen once, and involved a scripted death - such as flipping a switch or shooting crystals.

HL2 remains my favourite FPS of all time.

I haven't got far in the game yet (makes me sick) but I'm pissed that the hydra is cut out. Fair enough they've removed it for pacing but it was one of the selling points for the game. Like a movie trailer with bits that aren't in the movie :(

Be nice if they did a "HL2:Deleted Scenes"

Don't worry, it'll probably be an expansion pack that you'll pay full price for.

Hmm, another person this game messes with. Valve have done something weird here - word around the street is that CS:S doesn't do this to most people who get sick from playing HL2. What's the difference between them?

Also, remember the Half-life 1 demo? The demo were completely different levels designed to show the player the selling points of the game without making them play through bits twice if they bought the game. This was a great concept, but it can be taken the same way.

Its the FOV thats different isn't it? Doesnt HL2 run with a fov of 75 or something like that?

Some people have said that turning on vsync can help too.

Yep the FOV is 75 and its a bitch.

Fov XXX

and as Khel said some have reported that turning vsycn on helsp also.

BUT in other interesting news check out this thread over at Steam. Have a little read about what a guy discovered in another part of a map using noclip ect..its interesting to see what kind of other stuff is happening elsewhere while you go your merry way in the game. Also interesting to see the amount of voice acting recordings they must have done to have so much left out. There are some screenies in a few posts down the thread.

It's neither:

Field of View
Vsync
Mouse Smoothing
or Refresh rate

those have been reducing some people's issues but most report that none of them help very much - even those who regularly play other FPSs and have no problem with extended bouts of CS:S (personally that makes me pretty sick, but in a different, more anger-filled way)

Those quotes aren't left out, theres a couple of vortigaunts you can interact with during the actual game that do that. The one I did it on was the one that rigs up your hovercraft with the gun. When it was time to leave, instead of leaving I went over the vortigaunt and pressed E and he said something. So I thought cool, and pressed it again, and he said something else. And then I kept pressing it for absolute AGES and he just kept saying new stuff and unique quotes. Eventually it looped back to the start but it took a very, very, VERY long time.

agreed but what I was really referring to was after the cave in there is a battle going on between them and the combine somewhere else in the lab..did you see the screenies of the vort dude fragging some combine guys?

Yeah, I saw those, those were very cool :) Makes you wonder how much of that sort of thing is going on throughout the game in other places...

I found this site the other day as well. Its an attempt to try and piece together the storylines of HL and HL2 and work out whats actually going on. Some of it seems to be conjecture on the author's behalf, but some of it is backed up by ingame stuff and if nothing else, its an interesting read.

Yeah I tried the FOV thing and it helped a little - maybe 45 minutes before I wanted to puke not 30. Refresh rates and vsync aren't an issue since I've tried it with my CRT with a 90Hz refresh and my 12ms LCD. I've got mouse smoothing on and it doesn't help. Tried it in natural light, standard lights, flouro lights. None of them made much difference either. I've tried it both after work and on a relaxed sunday morning, so it's not like fatigue should have anything to do with it.

CS:S doesn't bother me so it's definitely something they done in HL2 that's different. Devestation and Will Rock both have the same nauseating effect but UT2004, Doom3 and Far Cry don't. *shrugs* I'm resigned to playing in 20-30 minute bursts. Although I do have some maxolon so I'm tempted to try that...

I never saw a HL1 demo. The first thing I knew about it was when I saw it on the shelf and read a review raving about it. What was in the demo?

Exactly why I'm starting to hate trailers. They have things in them that you don't see in the game. This is also even more prevalent in movies.

At least with the movies they usually throw the missing bits into the DVD as alternate or deleted scenes.

it wasnt a trailer. its was just movies showing off what the hl2 engine can do. people just assumed it was footage from the game.

heaps of cool but probably pointless stuff from the beta didnt make it into the game e.g. skinny guys with red lasers and that other gravity gun.
