Well I don't know how many other people have a membership here but apparently this place has gone uner and might close down for good. My mother was just telling me that she heard on ABC radio this morning that the gym was shut this morning, and that the owner has had payment problems for a while, and may have fled to Iraq to train merceneries. I am not joking. If it does close down I will luck out on about 10 months worth of a $450 membership there. Not happy. Anyone hear anything? Verify etc? |

wouldn't he have to refund monies? you should be able to get some money back, if they sieze the companies assets (gym equpiment etc...) and sell it, then you might be lucky

This has happened with lots of gym's, 3 times to me over the last decade, so I always pay by the month now, even if it ends up costing more. As for the refunds you are entitled but usually have 0% chance of getting any monies before the creditors are paid out as the reason for closing is usually lack of funds.

you my have inadvertently supported terrorism with your gym membership!! haha^ the website boasts the gym has more than 3500 members and which translates into a f***load of membership fees. A mate is trying to contact them now but having no luck. If you are interested I don't know if my mum heard it on ABC news or just local ABC radio. Not sure the name of the station she listens to but it's the one with Spencer Howsen or whoever. |

Ok. A mate has just spoken to one of his friends who works there. "Closed Until Further Notice". Very disappointing. |

Yep I wouldn't count on getting your money back. Everything will be sold for whatever they can get for it, then the creditors will take all the money. I really don't think there will be anything left to refund memberships, and if there is it'll all have to be split up amongst the members.
This probably explains why they were offering $300 annual memberships not long ago. Dodgey pricks. |

Members aren't priority creditors.
Also: Won't get much out of the equipment, they'll call in liquidators, and liquidators know how to rip the s*** out of a company, and charge for it. |

Yeah there was a letter under the door of our shop today (the fridge) which I assume they put under every door in the centre. Basically said that it had been coming for a while, but the real estate agent had been trying to avoid having to do it due to how many people it would inconvenience. It mentioned nothing about him fleeing overseas, just that it was unlikely to be sorted out anytime soon.
As for membership fees - I would doubt you would get those back. It would be something you would have to take the owner to court over. The rental bills/electricity etc and any unpaid wages would come first. |

I think it is, but the way the work it is like a mobile phone plan where you don't have to pay upfront but you get locked into a contract. Not a bad idea but from my experience people change gyms every 6 - 12 months so it can turn out bad with cancelation fees and what not. Anyone elaborate? Maybe you can transfer it to someoen else's name or something I am not entirely sure.

You can get it on a month by month basis, but I think it costs a bit more or something. I remember when I joined up there was an option between going month by month and paying a bit more, or signing a 12 month "agreement" (not a contract apparently, they made very sure to make the distinction to me) and getting a cheaper monthly rate.

Legally, nothing. If you've both agreed to something, such as exchanging money for a membership, it is a contract. Probably just their marketing speak for not being locked in for 12 months.

Clearly the answer is to move to Iraq, i'd imagine his training of militants would be better than what you'd get from a gym.

Yeah I go to Fitness First at Mt Gravatt. It is a great gym and if you do join up try the RPM classes as they are great for cardio. I find it is a great gym to do weights as there are not too many big angry men that might intimidate you.
I am on $55 a month as I joined up before they opened. Ahhh so that is you Bad .... Thought I remembered that face from the Quake 2 yeronga primary QGL days. last edited by fax0r at 21:34:49 28/Sep/04 |

They are $$$ pirates.
I signed while my student card worked, and only for the one gym. $50 p/month, which is ok. Got it down to $40 after referring a couple people. Student gym was like $22 a month but after fuel, time, it wasn't worth it. Normally I think it is like $90 per month and they do the whole $50 joining fee bulls*** but if you watch the promotions they usually run a freebie joining fee every three or four weeks. Also if you go monthly without contract/agreement then it's like $~110, but if you scour the uni flyer boards where you see all the accomodation adverts you can usually find one or two wanting to sell off the remainder of their contract (Wasn't there someone here wanting to bail recently?) Spoot is fantastic of course. Don't lose a locker key! $50!!! to get it replaced. Also don't expect any kind of personal training/schedule for free. $50 gets you in the door and that's it. Gym gear & facilities are among the best. |

good, i joined on monday actually, for trog its like $320 a yr (cause your a UQ stu) for me now that i'm an ex-student it cost 114membership + 320yr so 439 all up for 12 months gym/cardio/pool.
The gym has new machines since i last went to the uq gym (man i wasn't sitting down 8-10 hrs a day then either) and the weights section has been updated to thsoe rubber weights. I shopped around, and i go like 9:30-10 till closing (11pm) so less people there normally (but its holidays too, so who knows). My mate quit fitness first, it closes too early and is packed!! too small imo |

I joined Fitness First Indooroopilly 18 months ago. It's OK. Suits me well as work takes me to Sydney and Melbourne heaps and the membership allows me to continue my workout at the gyms there. Currently paying $50/month. I actually worked out that if I hired out 2-3 DVD's a week from FF (free) that alone pays off my membership :). I actually do go 3-4 times a week so for me it works out to be around $3-4 per entry.I tend to go to the classes more :/ (more chicks to perve on :) ) I jog to work from St Lucia to City (25mins) and then I go to gym to stretch, cool down and shower. The strectching machines they have are fantastic. It uses your own body weight to stretch yourself. I also use the weight equipment if I am early and feeling energetic enough. I take step and pump classes one after the other on Monday and Saturday and I work out with a mate on Wednesdays. The gym @ Indro can be quite crowded at times. However I tend to go to different Fitness First gyms in Brisbane depending on day and time. I have found the city and MT Gravatt to be not as busy. Lutwhyche has plenty of equipment but the studio classes (Step aerobics) can get quite full at times. I consider the equipment to be good. Fairly new stuff. But I am no expert. When you join you are usually asked for a joining fee and an admin fee. The joining fee is usually waivered. The admin fee can sometimes be waivered. Either way the way I look at it, the admin fee ($50) is what pays off for your freebie sports backpack, mini-towel, drink bottle, and headphones for the cardio machines. Fitness First also has promotions whereby when a member signs a mate up you the member gets $5 off his membership fee. Sooooo if anyone is interested in joining up give me a buzz =) maybe we can work out some mutual benefit. Edit: Lutwhyche has pool. Usage incl in membership last edited by Dragon Lee at 08:10:30 29/Sep/04 |

chopper is the guy that went overseas to train the iraquis.
he had nothing to do with owning or running of the gym, he just used it as a base for his PT business. He is that blonde guy with the flattop haircut that trains the bronco's and other assorted stars. this sux for me as I've been going there for 5 years or so, but luckily I only had just over a month left on my membership before my next renewel. I'd go to UQ but parking is a pain in the arse - for now i think I'll just go to my old college gym until I decide the best option. |

I just rang my mate who is also a PT there.
he said he rang the boss and the matter was being heard in court today. he reckons its very unlikely that the place has been closed permanently, and basically the centre management has locked them out of the premises over a lease dispute. They aren't behind in payments and it is in no way financially related apparently. having said that, he said he is owed about 1 months pay and the boss said a check would be in the mail - which sounds a tad dodgy. |

This is why when I started I chose Zest at carindale. My old gym closed under similar circumstances, so this time I was going to go for a franchise with a lot of money behind it.

fridays courier-mail said that TFC is closed for good and the only hope for outstanding memberships is if they reopen at another location.
I've also heard fitness first may take over the lease and rumour has it they will honour TFC memberships if people commit to another 12 months beyond their existing TFC contract. |
