I've actually just given one of my scratched CD's to a guy I work with who claims he can fix scratched CD's. It's $3 each and he claims it's a really good process. I'll be getting my CD back tomorrow so I can post then when I know if it works. You don't have to pay if it doesn't work, and apparently there is no risk of the quality getting worse.

Yeah you can fix up most lightly scratched CD's by using a special liquid which I believe fill in the scratches.
Try looking/asking for the stuff in JB Hi-Fi or something. |

you will become a better person if you stop listening to limp bizkit, only you have the power to change.

yes, they can be fixed to an extent.
goto your local video ezy and ask them if they have a "disc wiz" machine, this machine will sand/buff the underside of the disc etc... anyway it makes the disc look new again. I've had it done to my cd's and it works a treat. also the cost: its about 5 dollars per disc or something. i know Video Ezy at Wynnum have one because i've been there before. |

seriously, try rubbing toothpaste into the cd and cleaning it off
we did it with a data cd and were able to recover everything off it we needed (by reburning it) or u could just do what everyone else is saying and take it to a video store |

Just make sure that when you use the toothpaste, its not the gel stuff, it needs to be the white sort of toothpaste as it has little granuals that will be pushed into the gaps of the scratches

Yep, toothpaste works. Like already mentioned it has to be a paste toothpaste, not a gel one. I did it about 8 years ago to a music CD and it worked for a couple goes and then I would have to do it again (I didn't have a CD burner to make a good copy of it). I think that the toothpaste leaves a glitch in the audio though (very small one) just where the paste is.
Best bet would be to get the disk buffed at a video shop however. What I want to know is though, why is it that I always seem to rent scratched up DVD's when they could just buff them up themselves... |

^^ I concur, toothpaste does actually work, had a slightly scratched DVD that kept skipping/freezing when trying to watch in the DVD player, did the toothpaste trick not caring if it screwed the CD since it was already boned, and whaddya know, it actually worked and worked flawlessly.

you bitch & moan cd's cost too much, then you just throw them around & leave them on tables, the floor, etc. Because they get treated like this is why they are too expensive. If they were to be immortalised and forever reveared as gods obviously 30 bucks for a cd wouldn't be a big deal, but they are not, and so it is. A average walkman with skip protection will probably play the cd "flawlessly" because they are very innacurate, whereas a better cd player might try and reproduce the errors. Toothpaste works not because it fixes the cd, but because the laser doesn't try too hard to read the errors made obvious by the toothpaste. last edited by clipto at 11:02:35 31/Aug/04 |

What I want to know is though, why is it that I always seem to rent scratched up DVD's when they could just buff them up themselves... because some video shops don't have the buffing machine, because the one that my parents bought when they had a video ezy cost about $2500.00 2.5 years ago. also, the fact that everybody who rents DVD's scratches the crap out of them. like little kiddies.... sort of makes you wonder are DVD's really better than VHS in terms of durability. |

$2500 isn't that much... cos evrytime I get a scratched DVD that dun work I get a refund... and I am sure I am not the only one. A $2500 investment would soon pay off.

sort of makes you wonder are DVD's really better than VHS in terms of durability. You can argue durability but theres little question they are more disposable/replaceable. cos evrytime I get a scratched DVD that dun work I get a refund... You don't get it replaced? last edited by clipto at 11:19:25 31/Aug/04 |

I get a replacement if I want to see the movie, but if the DVD works for part of it and it was a s*** movie to that point I get a refund eheh |

I get a replacement if I want to see the movie, but if the DVD works for part of it and it was a s*** movie to that point I get a refund eheh not all video shops will give you a full refund.... if they have a replacement they will give you that regardless if you don't want to see it anymore. so atm you're lucky or they may offer you an exchange for another movie of your choosing. if they don't have another copy of the same title. |

you bitch & moan cd's cost too much, then you just throw them around & leave them on tables, the floor, etc. I say the same thing about people who say they need "backups" of their CDs (both games and audio CDs). It's no excuse if you don't want to look after your s*** in the first place. |

It's no excuse if you don't want to look after your s*** in the first place. Yes it is. It's called fair use and its a pretty common widely accepted excuse actually. last edited by clipto at 12:29:59 31/Aug/04 |

Video Sleazy at Coorparoo has a cd buffing machine and I'm pretty sure Civic at Wishart/Mt Gravatt does too.
also, the fact that everybody who rents DVD's scratches the crap out of them. like little kiddies.... sort of makes you wonder are DVD's really better than VHS in terms of durability This is the only down fall about renting DVD's. There are so many tards out there that have no respect for other peoples property and then they whinge and whine when a scratched movie wont play on their machine. Had a guy come in the other day and returned a DVD snapped in half and claims it was like that when he got it. Um, yeah right. Either pay a replacement or don't come back here anymore. 8-/ |

Like that when he got it, haha aren't the CDs kept in little CD wallet type things and the staff physically put them into the little rental cases when someone gets it out? So I think staff would have noticed if it was snapped when theywere putting it in =)
Besides, if you've ever snapped a CD you'd know they practically bend over on themselves completely before they break in two. |

I read an article ages ago about fixing CD like this. They used Mr. SHEEN or any other silicon based spray. Place the CD on paper and give it a liberal spraying of Mr Sheen, let it dry completely..overnight or longer and apparently it willl make the CD useable/copyable again. Apparently the silicon spray does the similar 'fill in the grooves' thing that toothpaste is reported to do. My local Video shop told me they used toothpast all the time to fix scrathed CD and apparently it works.
