Topic: Put together band for band comp?

Would anyone be interested in putting together a band purely to compete in this year's UQ Band Comp? I think it's usually in October. I'm lookin for a bassy, drummer and lead guitarist. I'll sing and play rythm and keys. I really kinda only wanna do this though if we can play my music and maybe 1 Pearl Jam or Muse cover!

Anyone interested? You have to be hot at whatever instrument you play - cause that we won't have to practice more than a couple of times!

Here are 2 originals to give you a feel. I'd wanna be able to play heavier rock as well as acoustic rock all in one set!

Yeh I didnt actually write the chord progression - mates from my old band did, then I just lay the singing down (and re-wrote the bridge). It's a very standard chord progression used in most rock songs.

Nice voice, I was half expecting a high pitched girly wail :P

I'd say that I could do lead but I'm not sure if I'm upto the standard/have the equipment/could be f***ed, but good luck though.

Well I think we only get 20 mins... so tahts only like 5 songs... so I was thinking 4 of mine, and then something f***ing hardcore by Pearl Jam like "Go", or something by Muse like "New Born", just to get the crowd really into it;)

Well I wanna know how good everyone is at what they do and what sort of gear they have, and if they can also sing harmonies or not. Any recordings, no matter how poor quality would be good!

When I say, what sort of gear, I mean, you have to have good enough equitpment to play live and sound decent;) I assume that the ppl with enough skill will have the goods to go with it!

LOL! Get out of the thread! I find that with electrics it's pretty much all about the FX and amp you are using. The guitar itself is more about the feel.

There is an old guy in the city that plays a pretty mean tambourine. His sign says "Thirsty alcoholic - Need money for beer".

I'm sure he'd do anything for a 6 pack :)

Just got back from the David Eden Bass demo @ Guitar Central - some crazy Brisbane bass talent there :)

As for me -

Equipment:
* Warwick FNA Jazzman 5
* SWR SM-400S head + 4x10 Warwick Cab
* Jim Dunlop Bass Wah

Sounds:
I only have live recordings of the band playing covers -
Black Sunshine - Antigravity
Black Sunshine - Steal My Kisses

very professional feel.. nicely recorded..

Personally i think its a bit slow though, not enough euuf or wow facter.. but thats the style you've gone for and it works really well, sorta tunes you wanna hear after a hard days work, or to chil with a few beers :)

But ive found if you want to win these comps, a simple catchy riff and a good beat; get a good feel on stage - look like ur enjoying yourself - (crack jokes / jump around / do what ever makes u feel good or makes u smile)

Generally speaking i enjoy myself when im playing fast up beat stuff or funky shiate cause it creates a great vibe - and u pass the vibe onto the audience and the judges; makes a connection with them and they'l rate u highly. Regardless of the complexity of your tunes.

But yeah, well done, great recording.

steal my kisses recording; drums are played pretty standard in comparison with antigravity, not bad or anything but it sounded like he just wanted to get the set over with - just did what was required without any extra effort.

ahh yeah on second listening he was just wayyy to 'on beat'. Their wasnt any swingy feel (that stuff that makes u head bob :P)

U can play the same beat just a fraction off the 'correct' (textbook) beat and creates a bit of a swing to it.. the bass is doing all the 'head bob' work. :P

nice bass dude.

hey sticky - just registered my band for the comp today, registration closes on the 10th August and the comp begins on the following monday (16th) and goes all week with the finals on the friday night i think. to register you need a photo of the band and at least 2 people (i think) who are currently studying at either a uni or tafe in queensland.

good luck everybody!

Rofl... they are so gay. Last time I went in it the people judging were the lesbos from the Union who clearly had never picked up an instrument in their lives. Why woudl they want a photo? Thanks for the info though dude!

All we need now is a s*** hot drummer.

Go out with a bang and do Lukin from pearl jam as your cover, that would rock.

I can play the saucepans as well if you need a drummer :D

So JMR, you won't wanna play with the Fasttracks? For lead guitarist I'm kinda looking for a Mike McCready style. If you can nail the solo in "Go"... you're in like Flinn, especially if you have a wah pedal (as if you would play lead and not have one)!!!

So it's looking like it'll be me, Squark, Bassman and Squark's lady friend on drums. I was at Revitalise last night at UQ and the Grates were playing and they had a pretty fkn good chick drummer, so it's given me some faith.

What time are you guys free to jam. Bassman whats the easiest way to contact you? I only use messenger...:/
