After several years of development, slipped release schedules, a leaked alpha, stunning screenshots and movies, and the biggest anticipation for any game, Activision and id Software have announced that Doom 3 has gone gold and we can expect to see it on shelves in early-to-mid August. In classical id style, Todd Hollenshead made the announcement via his .plan before the official press release came screaming down the wire and out to gamers across the world, drooling, slavering and no doubt acting like the hellish fiends that will be present in Doom 3 - the sequel to one of the games that changed the face of gaming and set the scene for how we play today.

If you're looking for a single player, action/adventure title with a strong horror theme and the absolute latest in cutting-edge PC graphics, Doom 3 is definitely going to be something you want to check out.

This represents the dawn of a new era in gaming.

As excited as I am for Doom 3, I am even more excited about the prospect of other games utilising and expanding on the D3 engine.

New MOHAA, COD, AvP etc games on the D3 engine..

Trog: the link to your Doom3 preview is incorrect - try this one: (you missed a p)

Does anyone have anything authoritative on the multiplayer side of things? I know it's primarily a single player game, but once that 24 hours is over, does anyone have anything authoritative on the state of the netcode etc?

I wonder how much the rights to the engine will cost for other companies to use and when it will become available. If D3 is meant to be an awesome single player game it will probably be longer than usual for any other games with the D3 engine to come out. I think I read somewhere that it costs $500 000 to use the Q3 engine, so I imagine D3 will be even more exy.
giririsss

when q3 originally came out, it was a million for the engine (or so i remember).

i wouldn't expect d3 to sell for much less than a mill for the engine.

Or, you could pay a few hundred dollars and license the torque engine which is now being upgraded with full support for specular lighting, enviroment mapping, bump mapping and all those other fancy things.

Out of that million dollars, $100k is probably the cost of the engine, and $900k is the cost of spending a day with John Carmack.

Well presumably the business ppl at id (who make up the majority of the company?) would be able to ask for as much as they wanted, and people would pay for it regardless, especially if they market it before other inferior engines like Hlaflivedtwo or whatever that s*** looking game coming soon is called.

Despite your sarcasm, that is a very good idea.

I've noticed that with the linux ports of previous ID titles, they run very fast. Much faster than their windows counter-parts.

Games are already out which look REALLY nice, without being cheesy.

You're a stupid f*** stain, PC Gamer have awarded a 94%. If you dont think that it could possibly be a remotely enjoyable game, you're a f***ing idiot.

And with that, Im off to empty my testicles at the new screen shots.

3 - 4 cd's

and it's not a stupid move at all.

id clearly stated (hollenshead) in his .plan that releasing it onto dvd is just not feasible, it's still cheaper to put out a 4 cd game, then a single dvd game.

fair enough in my view.

also, bugger waiting for the aus release, import the damn thing imo.

(on review of the .plan i can't find the dvd info, my bad, i'll continue looking for my source.)

Well, I think CNN directly quoting Todd Hollenshead proves that it's not a rumour.

I think you'd find it'd be Activision's stupid move, not id's.

I could be wrong but by the sounds of reading that article on CNN, the decision was made by id, not activision though activision probably were the ones that convinced id to make this decision.

no, it's I that suck, it wasn't in his .plan it was on the cnn money article.

I know some gamers are hoping to use the DVD players on their machines for something other than watching movies, but there are downsides," he said. "For us the cost of the goods and the cost of the replication and having to make two masters just isn't worth it."

It may even be the same but not worth spending double the amount to make both a cd version and a dvd version, and id probably aren't willing at this stage to cut off making a cd version completely...

i think if other big games are doing this like UT2k4 and Fry Cry and are seemingly doing well regardless, i can't understand why id can't do this since doom3 is probably going to be bigger than both games (the hype alone suggests that it'll far surpass them). It'll be interesting to see if Half Life 2 makes it to DVD.

My question would be though, if you have paid for a cd version of the game, is it legal to put all the cd's onto one DVD for personal use?

yeah, i knew that but that wasn't quite what i was refering to, i was talking about back as far as quake 3 days, i remember hearing a long time ago that quake3 was optimized for nvidia chipsets but i can't remember if this was confirmed or not.

Ultimately your probably not going to notice a huge difference between the nvidia and ati cards, nothing you'd physically see while playing the game anyway.

Is anyone here old enough to remember Quest For Glory 1 coming out on 10+ disks? Or Tie Fighter, UFO, Rise of the Dragon, Day of the Tentacle, X-Wing, Heart of China, Twilight 2000, or Space Quest 3?
Games were coming out on 6-12 disks all over the place. No big deal. How many times are people expecting to have to install this game?

And yeah, Windows 95 was 25 disks. I have it lying around somewhere with bad sectors on disk 8. :-/

The reason they dont want to make a cd and dvd version, as quoted on page 3 (i think) was because they dont want to have to pay A LOT OF MONEY for two masters.

Demo: our priority was finishing the game first and now we are turning our attention to the demo. I don't have any information to share regarding any specific content, but I don't believe that we have
ever disappointed in that regard in the past. We will release the demo as soon as it's done, but this probably won't happen until after the game has arrived on U.S. store shelves.

Looks like we might have a demo to play just after US release and before it actuallly gets down under (arround the 13-15th August)

Well at least if they put it on a DVD you could hit install and walk away and do something while it's installing. Having multiple cd's means you have to be keeping on eye on s***.

That's why God created HyperThreading. ;-)

BTW, I love the UAC active desktop.

From what I have researched both cards are kick arse pieces of hardware and any gamer could be proud to have either in their rig.

The issues most people tend to dwell on are the feature sets of both. The Nvidia card is defineately a rich in feature card and probably more 'future proof' than the ATI card purely because they support the Shader Model 3 specs. Now wether this is really relevant at this point in time is debatable. Only a few expected titles and some games currently receiving patches to support SM3 justify buying the card for that reason alone. SM3 will most probably not be the 'norm' for many games for some time yet. Also, looking at comparison pics between SM2 and SM3 you aint going to see a lot of IQ difference. Not unless your standing still admiring the scenery and thats generally not advisable in most FPS games. :) The Nvidia card does perform very very well, plus there is that recently added attraction of being able to SLI the cards down the track (in a suitable mobo of course) and doing a fairly cheap upgrade at that point in time. two SLI 6800 Ultras would probably handling any games coming out in the next couple of years I reckon.

The ATI card is also an extremely powerful piece of kit, more a revision of the r300 core but on steroids really. Generally across the broad spectrum of test the cards are pretty equal, but it seems the ATI card eclipses the NVidia card at higher res and with AA/Ansio cranked up.

bit long winded but really as I see it you would be a happy puppy with either card, providing you have the CPU to do them justice. Unless you have a 3ghz or above you are really wasting your time with these babies.

Here a recent 6800 Ultra review with an X800XT in the comparison.

And a review of the his x800xt Pro

Good luck, its a tough decision this time round.

I pre-ordered my copy of Doom 3 today and got an EB "promtional pack". Comes with a Pinky pewter figurine about the size of a 20c coin, and a decent sticker the size of a CD. It all came in a box large enough to hold three DVD cases, so the size of the official release box could be scarey. :-)

Hey, says here it should contain a poster too. I didn't get my poster! I want my poster! :-(

Also I hear the original Doom novel "Knee Deep in the Dead" is being sold again to get rid of remaining stocks around the world. I bought it many years ago and I have to say it's one of the crappest novels I've ever read. Utter trash. I ended up cutting out the inside to make one of those secret-compartment books (which I never used). I wish I hadn't now, might have ended up going for something on Ebay.

i like how at the end the guy says "please dont let that game suck" ...

i dunno. for some reason that didnt excite me at all. still looks like running backwards firing is what the gameplay conmsists of.

the first thing i want to do when i get the game, is replace the s***ty shotgun sound effect with the original one. THEN i'll probably have a lot more fun.

'We are pretending that the first 2 games didn't exist, and man have accidentally created a portal to hell and the demons are invading!'

Players will revisit the setting introduced in 1993's DOOM but with a more involved story line written by sci-fi scribe Matthew Costello (of 7th Guest and The 11th Hour fame).

It sounds like you are mixing up storyline with game progression. The storyline of 7th guest and 11th hour was rather good. I still rate 7th guest as an awesome game.

Well, I have played doom and doom2 you know, and this is a remake (apparently) so I experienced them in some way.

I guess it is possible that they are just releasing that vauge description but in actuality, they will have a decent story there with good characters and some nice twists and turns, but I'd be willing to bet money that they don't. My prediction is that it will just follow the usual pattern, kill the zombies, get through the door and kill the boss at the end. Do you think I am wrong in saying that?

What do you think it will be like? Just take a guess.

The next mail is from "labby@pokemon.com", he wrote:

"PIKACHU I CHOOSE YOU!!!"

At first I didn't understand what this email meant, so I decided to ask one of the children if they knew. I was told it is a Pokemon character, which is a cartoon on television. Upon doing furthur research, I've found that this Pokemon cartoon is negative for our nation's youth as well. I won't get into detail as to why I think this, but I think it causes our children to detach from reality. Our Heavenly Father would not permit us to commit such sins, so please keep children away from this cartoon.

Implementing a decent narritive isn't a 5 minute job. If it was, every single form of entertainment would be able to tell its narritive piece with style grace and nobody would get the wrong impression ... ever.

The sad truth is that many people think that implementing narritive is easy, and never develop during the process of whatever it is they are building. Which funnly enough explains why so many games are s***.

Fpot: when the time comes I think we will have to get a poll on the issue; I’m not loosing $5 just because u can’t admit you’re wrong.

Typo as a man who likes his literature (I’m assuming) I think at least u would appreciate that "put five mins aside for a story line" is not literal, I am aware it takes more then 300secs to write a half decent storyline.

The point I was trying to illustrate and you couldn't pick up on was the bet you proposed was impossible, because whether a storyline is good or not is totally subjective to opinion.

The reason I don't think doom3 will have a good storyline (and I've said this numerous times now :/) is because of the seven games preceding this that have had s*** storylines that didn't intruige me for one single second.

storyline is irrelevant in a game like this anyway, I'm sick of f***wits going on and on about half lifes story, WHAT f***ING STORY? it's story can be summed up in about a sentence, the one thing it did was apply that story well, with atmosphere and pacing.

And the description of doom 3's story is virtually identical to that of half lifes.

Scientists experiment, open portal to bad place, bad things come, fight bad things, go to bad place for big finale, the end.

Why is it 'irrelevant' in a game like this? It's a game that is solely focussing on single player, I'd say it is pretty f***ing relevant myself. And yeh, hl had a s*** story. I was always puzzled by people who said it was good because from the second I played it I thought to myself that it was exactly the same as doom or quake. The marines coming in to clean the situation up was a nice touch, though.

Examples of games that have a good storyline are System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, which was an absolute cracker worthy of a movie or novel with the sheer depth of character and world interaction.

the difference is HL incorporated realistic things into the game which people could relate to eg. Earth, scientists, cops (stuff like that) therefor giving another dimesion to the storyline in that respect. This leads to better gameplay (3rd party characters to interact with/co-operate with) and in the long run a better game.

Seeing as reports indicate that a lot of the info passsed onto you the player is via your PDA and that you pick up snippets of info, emails ect between people who were in the station I sort of hope it works like System Shock 1&2..let some plot elements and the 'real' story behind things evolve as you complete each objective ect.. Seeing as they had the 7th guest guy on board to write a story I am also hoping it has a bit of depth and a few twist. Either way it will be a huge cashcow for Id.

---Top Ten Reasons Why Doom 3 Isn't A Satanic Influence---

10. Doom 3 actively encourages the killing of demons. (do we really need another 9 reasons?)

9. Anyone running Windows has already sold their soul to Microsoft, which far outranks Satan.

8. Doom 3 will include an occult filter called "uninstall.exe".

7. All potentially influential young people of today have already been turned to Satanism by Harry Potter.

6. Repeatedly killing friends in deathmatch mode will take our minds of the occult symbols.

5. The delayed release of Doom 3 may indicate that we are, in fact, already in hell.

4. Due to a CD-only release, game installation is expected to finish well after the second coming of Jesus.

3. Gordon Freeman will save us in time for Christmas.

2. The risk of morbid obesity and vitamin D deficiency far outweigh any risk of damage to the soul.

1. 92% of beta testers are reported to have exclaimed "OH MY GOD!" while playing, whereas only 6% exclaimed "OH MY PRINCE OF DARKNESS!". The remaining 2% called upon various other god(s)/godess(ess).

I work at the AU office - we put out a press release saying it would be then (ie week of August 2) but I guess most places ignored it/thought it was just a reprint of the US release. Anyhow, we wanted to make sure that Australia got it at the same time as the US so we sent someone out to the US to pick up the masters and are already well into replication and on track for that week

I pre-ordered from Electronics Boutique and snuck a peek at their To Be Released schedule folder. Doom 3 for PC was down for around the 2nd or 3rd of August (can't remember exactly, early anyway). I assumed they'd just recorded a vague date based on the US release, but perhaps it is coming out here early after all.

How sad is this: Sometimes I stare at my Doom 3 Active Destktop countdown swflash like it's all I'm hanging out for in life. Still, you gotta laugh. :D

Let me guess - you then call work stating you have a 'nasty stomache bug' & don't see yourself coming in the next 2 days? :)

Since Quake 4 will be using the Doom 3 engine, I would expect the development cycle to be a little shorter. So that's one game that could be hyped up for the near future. Though I can't imagine what they're going to do with the Quake series. Bigger explosions, maybe? It never struck me as having much of a plot.

I think the exciting things coming up will be the non-hyped releases. After D3 and HL2 come out, it's gonna be mod heaven. The tools they're releasing to developers are like nothing seen before. But you do have a good point as far as this current excitement build-up goes. I think the delay of HL2 has left a lot of people salivating for the next big release. Doom 3 has incredible technology, incredible prequel popularity, and incredible release timing. The last thing I remember being this hotly anticipated was, um, Windows 95 I think (seriously).

I take it you don't approve of "Gay-Life2"?

ummm, im not sure i understand what you are asking.
if you are after specs, my current pc is an athlon 2400xp with 512mb ram and a ti4200.

I have an athlon64 3500 socket 939 box with 1gb corsair something or other very fast ram sitting in my room, but it has no video card yet and thats my problem.

I want the machine completed for when doom3 comes out, and it looks like having a 6800ultra for it in around a week is an impossibility

Either way, I take it no-one knows where a couple of 6800 Ultra cards would be available in brisbane? Even getting a GT is impossible by next week it would seem.

Anyone?

Work your way thru this thread over at OCAU. Lots of retailers expected arrivals dates and such in there. One guy who post is a Nvidia distributor and he pops in now and then to inform people of which stores he has just made or is about to make a shipment to. Good luck as pre-orders seem to snap them up in a few hours but you might get lucky.

anime is cool, so shove it dude, there was anime way before there was decent games on computer, so leave my sig alone, its only a temporary one anyway. and leave my spelling alone, its faster to type, so u can also shove it. oh, and i live in brisbane right now whoever asked...

Actually that Nvidia Dist. just made a post on the last page (page 29 at the moment) of that thread regarding avilability of Ultras and GT's. Not looking good if you are after an Ultra.

In other news, this just in from Planet DOOM. Doom3 wont run on win98/SE ect..

Well there have been rumours flying around lately that DOOM 3 would not be able to run on computers that have Windows 98 or Windows 98SE as their operating systems. Since we here at planetDOOM dislike rumours in all shapes and sizes, we went straight to the horses mouth so to speak and asked Activision themselves. The reply we got was that it is confirmed and indeed true that DOOM 3 will only run on Windows machines that have windows 2000 or XP and not lower. So there you have it, looks like some peoples upgrading woes just aren't quite over yet.

sif you would be using it anyways..

No i hate to say im not telling porkies i have seen it being played in perth at some netcafe's here. The owner of the cafe has paid for certain memberships to some warez forums in america and germany ect and they have had a fully gold version of doom3 for 3 days now mirrored.

The original mirror of the game came from a high up games distributor near the production level.

Some game store owners got their hands on it this week before anyone else in the US, here are some screenshots they took;

Cobz: neither of those sites are from game store owners. They are both from people that have bought the game in a store in the US that hadn't yet received word to not start selling it until the 3rd.

Thats why you have a torch. You cant see as far or as wide and it means that monsters can sneak up on you in your periphery and scare the living f*** out of you... it adds to the atmosphere.

I just got an email from Berlin Wall that Doom III has arrived and my copy can be collected from 8:00 am tomorrow at either of their King William Street (Adelaide) stores.

Me and a few mates are turning up early at the 45 King William St store (near corner of Hindley & King Willam St). I'll be there from about 7:40. I'll be the one in the shirt and tie (damn those work dress codes!) with a big toothy grin on his face.

PS: I do not work for Berlin Wall, nor am I related to the owner or staff.
