you cant use DD internationally, unless the person in the other country owns an australian bank account

edit: debit visa is basically DD just on the visa/credit network

QTCU Visa cards can be linked to a DD account. I used mine in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand all with no dramas.

A friend of mine has a St George account, shes 18+....but it might still be ok.

Basically she has a normal band account, except there is a credit card number linked to it, so if she uses the credit card, it takes the money straight out.

I'm pretty sure that a minor can obtain a credit card with parental approval and/or as guarantor.
The reason I say that is because we would never accept a C/Card as Proof of Age (18+)where I work @ an Online Casino as a minor was able to obtain a C/CArd with parental permission

lots of naughty sites use CC as age verification so the chances of u getting one <18 are slim, in fact 0. you can get one if u co-sign with a parent.

The only way to get one is to have a join account with someone over 18 cause you still sign a contract with Visa. The reason being is like someone said they used a DD Visa Card overseas, these transaction can have a delay before debiting your account, also international balances are only updated periodically so there is a window of opportunity for fraudulent activity, hence the contract. Read the fine print as they will own your arse if you DD something without adequate funds being available.

What about the banks that "sell" you a disposible credit card number that has a agreed upon amount of money linked to it? I'm not sure if there are any Australian banks that do this so you might have to look overseas.

What about making a company and just getting a company credit card?

The 18 old limit is about getting credit. The QTCU Visa linked to a debit has no credit.

But yeah I got that card when I was 18, becuase I didn't need it before then.

I asked about getting a visa debit card a few years back at suncorp and qtcu and they said that there are some conditions imposed by the bank and other conditions imposed by Visa (these are the same conditions that Visa imposes on ALL card holders including credit cards).

The conditions imposed by the banks vary from bank to bank, the conditions imposed by Visa are the same wherever you go. I don't know who imposes the age limit criteria, but if it is Visa, then I suspect you won't find any bank that will give you a card.

might get my parents to make me an account then, account keeping fees shouldnt matter as the money going into it will allow it to pay itself off

i called st george b4 i made the thread, they said 18.. :(
might call suncorp and ask them if its possible todo with parent concent.. or have the account in a parent's name but have it linked to my account..

the ppl from st george explained that its just an 'addon' to your debit card, so it costs nothing to use/have, it just gives you visa/credit ability

You need to be 18 to sign a contract. Getting a cc is getting a contract to the bank.

On another topic. If your under 18 you legal dont have to pay for parking at a carpark. By entering a car park you are agreeing to their contract. By law, a minor cant enter a contract.

That is so completely wrong its not funny.

Minors can enter contracts for 'essentials' only, but in the instance which you pointed out - car parking (and as can be related to many others) - no proprieter in their right mind is going to accept your offer of $0 for their services. By having them not accept your offer, there is no contract.

^^ correct, but for legal reasons its easier for Visa to blanket everyone in the "not untill your old enough to sue" category.

When i got my visa debit card they still made me fill out details of my employer (i'm 24, full time employed) & major assets (houses/cars etc) since they said that in some circumstances you can run the card into credit. Of course i asked what was the point of calling it a debit card when you can overdraw it but the woman didn't really answer.
If you do get one and you're worried about getting ripped off/having your number stolen you might want to look into having it put on a separate account that you keep a minimal amount in (just enough to avoid fees - not sure if they let you though).
