telstra is less reliable but has more free content and generally doesn't cap as early as optus.

My 12 gig optus is sweet never drop outs or whateva. Though the 28k cap speed is very s*** (what im on atm) i dunno what Telstra's is but that is the only down side of Optus i can see.

hmm Scuzzy i'd much rather go cable then adsl. better pings and faster downloads, also cheaper.
however if all hell broke lose and cable couldnt be installed then i'd deff go internode since you posted it :) |

Pete, i think it'd just depend on the area really, see if you know anyone around that area mainly and see what they say. Ive got Bigpond but i live in the valley/city and ive had no problems at all, connection wise, occasionally the mail server will not work, but other then that its fine

12gb is okay, but i think id prefer 64k capping over 28k... after being on 28k for like a week or 2 straight... 56k is a dream
optus 28k, just isn't 28k, it chokes even loading txt sites |

Optus = 12gb downloads...does not count for uploads, after 12gb capped to 28.8k
Telstra = 10gb both upload and download, you "MAY" be capped when over the download limit and your cap speed is 6.4kb more reliable = optus |

I'm on telstra, pretty much no problems, and its easy to stay under the cap for most of the month, then do all your major downloading at the end of the month and not worry about the cap.
Also free content is great, especially seeing as demos are starting to hit 400-500meg. And I think its cheaper than optus as well. |

its the free content that makes telstra the win.
if I had my time again I'd go Telstra for sure. |

Consider that if you move it will be far more difficult to get optus than it will be to get telstra in your next place, and paying out contracts is bad.
The telstra modem can be used on the Optus network for a discount on installation but not vice versa. Telstra will let you do a self install for cable if possible, Optus wont. Everything else has been said, only thing worth repeating is GET ADSL YOU FOOL. They will be bringing the price down for adsl soon too as telstra are getting raked over their pricing. Oh, also Telstra f***ed this country's broadband for years, and are still doing it, the ACCC has complained about them constantly, theres reliability issues, why don't you take the moral high ground and go with someone else (who is arguably better). Telstra still charge $140 for 1 excess gigabyte, you obviously wouldn't go with this plan but billing errors or some malicious bastard could still get you stuck with a bill of tens of thousands of dollars. just for arguments sake, what sortta pings do you get on adsl? Anything from 0ms to 100 ms. A 512/512 plan typically offers you the best latency, but if your close to the exchange on new/decent copper you can expect a brilliant ping regardless. I would bet Optus' cable latency would beat any ADSL at least 9 times out of 10, but thats mainly speculation, who knows with Telstra, if you go with them you take your chances as far as I'm concerned. Don't want to get into ADSL providers but I wouldn't reccommend Internode without fail every time, you should shop around on Whirlpool if you decide to go with ADSL. last edited by clipto at 22:59:05 27/Jun/04 |

depends on the adsl speed.
1500/256 gives you pretty much comparable ping to cable |

I would definatly go telstra, as much as I dont like their policys, but after a lot of testing, a friend and I discovered you get capped on telstra when your downloads hit around 14 gigs ( NOT uploads ) free content, games servers, and way cheaper than optus.
I have a problem which turned out to be a faulty modem, got it replaced and its sweet. Oh, and latley, its been, next day or two for techs to come out, not next month or two. They are definatly picking up. Reliability, well, iv had one outage since january, and it lasted 2 hours, which I got a free month for. two hours for $59, i can deal with that. |

me and defi both had the heartbeat problem start today for absolutely no f***ing reason at all. i have been on the identical setup for 2 years, and ever since the ozcableguy guy (loloneoneone) came out and set it all up the heartbeat wasn't a problem. im running an fm114p, and a simple firmwear upgrade fixed absolutely everything ! same for defi telstra give awesome pings for me all the time, quick as hell downloads.. im happy with them except when you get f***ed around by their f***ing moronic tech support gooks who can't speak english |

I don't know anything about cable, since Canberra is too s*** to have it. We do, its called TransACT. But it s***. In theory, its better than cable. But apart from running out of money you have to pay stupidly expensive amounts just for a below par internet account. |

Having been on both within the last 12 months, we had the choice when we got into our new place, and I took Telstra, no questions about it.
The thing with Telstra, is with the massive uptake of their broadband lately some areas have been flooded with cable customers, and speeds have suffered accordingly. We're in Camp Hill and it's pretty good, slows down a reasonably amount in peak times, but stil beats ADSL speeds hands down, and during off-peak hours, picks up nicely :p With the charging of uploads, unless your doing alot of bittorrent, or blatently breaking your AUP (i.e, running a web/ftp server with alot of traffic) then you'll have a hard time breaking 1gb a month of uploads. And if you are doing alot of uploads, of you're a warez kiddy, and that extra gig means alot to you, then you should be on ADSL anyway :p Gamearena is definately the big win for Telstra, all the latest game patches, movie trailer, E3 demos, linux distro's, just about whatever you could need in relation to gaming downloads is there. Plus they host a whole load of game servers, for the latest and greatest games, with the big classics still there, not to mention the kickass pings :p And then on top of that, you've got things like the V8 Supercars hosted there, and you can go back and watch highlights of the latest races and interview all without using any of your limit. They aren't quite so reliable as optus perhaps, I can't recall Optus ever having an outage in the time I was with them, but in the last month or so since we've been back on telstra we've had two. One lasted an hour or two in the morning, and the other lasted a whole 5mins. Bigpond are generally (in my experience, I had BPA cable at my parents place for about 3yrs) pretty quick and good in repairing the faults that come up, and we used to get rebates on our monthly bill too, sometimes for outages we'd never even noticed. Anyway, my vote is definately for telstra, Optus is 2gb more, slower cap speeds, $5 more (IF you take telephone with them too) and a bit more reliable. People will say Telsluts customer service isn't up to scratch either, but in my recent dealing with optus, neither is theirs. |

Firefrog : Last time I checked Optus Cable was exceptionally good in Camp Hill, this was back when Netstats was still being honored as well (but not offered). Always capable of getting >7mbps no matter the time, always close to 0 ping to first hop (I think it sat on 3 ms or something), not once did we have an outage. It was truly as solid as a f***ing rock, there was never any variance what so ever. I could get a excellent ping to uswest even when downloading at >7mbps.
Just thought you might be interested to know... |

Yeah I know about TransACT, and AHAHAHAA I because of that I didn't bother mentioning it! :P But true, we do have it...But sooo pathetic it's not worthwhile noting it! :/ Edit: Oh and by 'not knowing anything about it' was in reference to expirence more than anything else. last edited by Ecstasy at 01:03:49 28/Jun/04 |

hmm reverse psyhcology, .. or is it reverse reverse psyhcology? or not even reverse psyhcology...
hmm seriously what about package wise we were going to go cable tv as well, foxtel digital sounds good, getting them all will be great but that means no optus since they dont do digital or do they?? also digital is fukin stupid aparently, simply because they use a normal dialup modem for the user imput. you get CHARGED everytime it dials up.... also you have to wait for it to dial up before things will happen. why use a dialup modem on a telephone line when theres a fukload of bandwidth RIGHT THERE on the cable!! how does cable internet work???????!!!! cable internet uses 1/8th of the bandwidth availible through the black coax cable poking out your very wall. how can the bandwidth be availible via dialup not be availible via the very cable that handles both oneway-TV and 2way-data. last edited by Fuknukle at 21:49:48 29/Jun/04 |

im an old fan of optus and loved the old 'netstats' i dono if alot of people relise this, but (i was on netstats until september 2003, had 3gb for about 2 months then got 12gb) anyway - what happened was, optus sent out an email announcing that all customers remaining on netstat system will have a new dl allowance, where they made 1 stat = 1.2gb therefore allowing 12gb, which is what we get now, but insted of getting capped, you got suspended, so im fine with the setup now. last edited by Jerry at 12:24:28 30/Jun/04 |

ive had optus for 2 years and its only gorn down twice. and only for like an hour in total down time for me. Optus and telstra are both good. but with optus you dont have to install any programs. so your internet can be used by any OS with tcp/ip protocol. nun to that heart beat crap and installing the login. and if you still that telstras good, look at there other services and customer service. they think 250,000 conplaints a day is ok. Do you?

Oh yeah you can only get login software for windows, linux and macintosh, so if you don't have one of those operating systems you are s.o.l.

just use a standalone home router such as belkins, dlink, netgear etc. problem solvered.
i dont have any pcs with telstra login software at all. it used to work fine but since they dropped the heartbeat ive had trouble. :$ ive since updated the firmware and still nogo. (the firmware was said to solve alll trouble.) but when we move this weekend i'll have the space to setup a proper server2003 box(login software/script) and use the belkin router as an wireless access point for the rest of the house. |
