And google will do it right too.
But it will take a lot more than just a gig of space to have me move from my current service though: http://fastmail.fm |

the idea of gmail sounds good, the only thing that didn't sit right with me was knowing the fact that it scans all your mail, picks up key words in your email then gives you advertisements based on those keys words... e.g. if you sent or recieved an email about gaming, your likely to end up with ads pimping various new games titles. i think thats the way it's meant to work.

So you get a gig of email for free? How the hell is that viable?

I have seen claims they can provide the storage at as low as 50c per gig, as high as $2 per gig.
If they were willing to sacrifice reliability they could do it sooo much cheaper. |

You have to keep in mind, how many people are actually going to use a gig of server space for their email? I'm thinking, not very many. So while they offer a gig per user, that doesn't actually mean they'll physically have a gig per user. With 10 gig of space you could cater for hundreds of accounts, if not thousands.

Bump: And if you know anyone with a blogger.com/blogspot account, there might be a chance they have the ability to invite two people to gmail!
I have the pleasure of an account with gmail (still in its beta stages), and I must say, simple is always the best. The interface is very VERY sexy, and incredibly fast loading. last edited by scuzzy at 09:57:00 30/Apr/04 |

So its like advertising or spam or those taglines you get in other free email services - but its actually useful? I can't get over all these self-proclaimed 'privacy advocates' that are blowing over Google scanning email. If you've got a problem with that, you simply don't use the service. What a solution! |

i cant see a register link just sign inits not public yet, but select people with blogger accounts (a google web log service, most likely automated user selection process) can "invite" two people to join the google beta. So it’s a matter of finding someone who can invite others to join. But I belive once registed, after a few days gmail users get the ability to invite two people aswell. last edited by scuzzy at 10:17:20 30/Apr/04 |

trog,
i think there were two prongs to privacy concerns. The scanning, which is bulls***, and the gmail not honouring deletes, which wasn't a bulls*** concern, but i believe has been addressed. |

surely hotmail doesn't delete all copies of your email when you hit delete unless they don't have backups. Google doesn't delete messages because their filesystem likes to append data rather than overwrite data.

The complaint is a bulls*** complaint. I'm not abreast of the delete issue, but initially the issue was that it wasn't that it would just take a little while for a delete to really occur, it was that a delete was just not going to be honoured, and your personal mail would sit on their servers forever, kind of like what happens to usenet posts if you don't have anti-archiving headers set - oh how i wish i'd set anti-archiving headers :( |
