Yes I would have to say that given what it does achieve, BF1942 is probably the best title for 2003.

With the DC mod as mod of the year as well.

I just wish there was a system of maintaining better cor-ordination of troops ect.. on a team. The idea that Eidos had years ago for the then work in progress 'Flying Nightmares' where a team member was a Commander and could see the entire battle map and direct troops accordingly to key positions would have serioulsy rocked in BF1942. But hey ya cant have everything.

i dunno about that . . . .

i prefer the realism approach that they have gone with;

communication works well with bf/dc when using voice com through rogerwilco/vermillio/whatever

The idea proposed in Flying Nightmares was that each commander could only see the parts of the map that had been reconned (either by ground or air troops)by his team. I should have been more specific. I reckon the ability to get intelligence from men in the field and then act on that info (even if it was slightly inaccurate as in real world conflicts) would have added another dimension to BF.

I have to agree with KOTOR actually, I can't go past that for best game of the year. Hell, so far I'd say best game of the millenium. Keep in mind I'm talking about XBox though, I've heard all sorts of horror stories with the problems encountered with the PC version, but on XBox it was beautiful and never skipped a beat for me.

BF1942 is probably the best title for 2003

Didn't BF1942 come out last year though?

  • Star Wars: KOTOR
  • Call of Duty
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Half-Li.....oh...still waiting for it
:P

they would go on my list of games of the year, so it'd be a toss up between those

i've had no issues with Kotor myself

that game with the commander sounds a lot like savage - cept savage is more fantasy rather than ww2

but yeah, game of the year would have to go to kotor or mp2 or cod - only games ive actually managed to play right through in single player, and for cod also have a blast with mp, and DC for mod of the year for sure - a mod that imo is better than the original

but yeah , next year looks to be a cracker as well for games :D

Well for that flying nightmares thing, you could always just download the map hack and then you can see everyone on map plus ESP in game. Aswell as no recoil etc

Enemy Territory.

a) its free
b) its built on rock-solid technology
c) it has anti-cheat
d) it has a fun, well-developed class dependecy system
e) it has awesome maps
f) its free
g) there are two great mods for it that extend the base functionality and gameplay options (etpro and shrub)
h) it is an awesome game for public servers
i) it is an awesome game for competitive play (stop whining, RTCW players, it rocks you)
j) it is well supported with servers just about everywhere in the world
k) it is the fifth most popular online action game (http://www.gamespy.com/stats) so you're almost always going to get a game
l) its free
m) map editor is out there and new maps are coming out, so (hopefully) it will have legs
n) the gameplay is just good fun

I dont really play games anymore... Got an old p3 600 mhz & Dial-up. I'm pov and have a mortgage :(

BUT... I have alot of friends that do have good comp's. And I used to play Natural-Selection 1.0 to the point of sickening addiction :/.

I did, for the record try to play NS 2.0. But as u all know, The 3rd Reich re-incarnated as The Nazi Game company known as Valve introduced the absurd 'STEAM' thingo.

So as a retired game Veteran I'd have to say NS is still my personal N0.1 even though I dont play it anymore.

Then from what I've seen on my friends machines I'd agree that BF 1942 and all it's mods comes 2nd and ET a close 3rd.

My $0.02

Spook you should never ever use the word realism and DC/BF in the same sentence. Not unless it is to point out that those games have no basis in reality.

My number one game of the year I guess goes to COD.

It has the best SP I have seen in awhile and the MP isn't all bad either.

Best

FPS
1) COD
2) BF

Mod
1) EOD
2) Forgotten Hope (both modes for BF)

RTS
1) Empires dawn of the modern world

MMORPG
1) AC2 (although the PvP really sucked)
2) Shadowbane

Worst games/Mods of the year
1) DC
2) Eve online
DC is just a lame spam fest thus it's popularity with the children.

Eve online is by far the single most mind numbingly boring piece of rubish I have had the misfortune of installing on my pc.

ET probably has the largest slice of my playing time this year. I'm not really SICK of the same old 6 maps but i wouldn't mind something different (guess i'll have to look around more) :)

It's a good step in the evolutionary ladder for such games whereas something like BF just ignored most of the lessons learnt (from other games) regarding basic game features. I even introduced a friend to online gaming with ET and he's picked it up without problems and can hold his own now. Before he used to not be able to do that jump onto the ladder in the lift shaft in halflife if you want an idea of where he started from :)

DC is getting better but i still don't think much of it although admittedly i haven't played that much of it in the last 2 versions. Full marks for effort but it has... issues.

Spook how about you tell me what makes it even close to realistic? Then tell me what experience you have to back the claims of realism.

The list of crap is to long for me to even make a start without knowning exactly what bits you believe have some basis in reality. Although the game having a hit indicator may go alittle way to showing how hard it'll be to back your beliefs is.

DC is and always was a noob spam fest.

As far as naming other games that more like the real thing I can think of 2 right off the top of my head. Americas Army and Ghost recon hell even CS is closer to the real thing than bloody BF or DC. Oh and WW2 online is miles ahead of BF/DC aswell.

There is never likely to be many games that mirror reality very well. The simple fact that kiddies just like to spam and get easy Points is enough to make sure of that.

Hopefully in 2004, developers will finally get over this whole "realism" thing and start going back to making games fast paced and fun. Call of Duty was a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned, I wanna see more like that. Something class based, with the feel of the early DOD releases (like around the time of 1.3), maybe with vehicles, but its not a necessity.

Yeah Khel COD rocks when a bunny hoping moron can take out a prone player thus defeating the point of even having prone in the game.

Oh and the bunny hoping fag does this mind you with an unscoped sniper rifle.

Fantstic fun for the people that just like a rush spam fest with little to no brain work.

I'm totaly sick of games that don't reward ppl that use their brains. I want to see games that require stealth, brains and a degree of marksmanship( as close as the games can get it).

IMO all the fps games over the past couple of years are just the same old s*** that has been done to death. They just wrap it in some new textures.

Am I cynical? Well I guess I am but it's no suprise when you consider that PC's are getting better but we are still stuck with games that are nothing new.
