get a really decent power supply, don't get a cheapass one if that's what comes with the case, better to get a case without a PSU and buy a good PSU seperage.

I brought a cheap $45 case and power supply 18 months ago 300watt it runs a duron system with stock fan, 1 hdd and 1 cd without a problem, most problems will only occur if you run heaps of devices off the power supply and say the monitor as well.
As for your system, do you get a graphics card with that? |

tomshardware (yes, i know they can be bought) had imo a good article about choices when buying a new chip.
the question - is intels price difference worth the performance difference. In all, no - not at all!! They recommend a 2600+ which easily pumps to a 3200+ with a 200fsb which would really squeeze that extra juice for performance. Recently I've been wanting to get a p4 for the HT thingo, but the price is just such a turn off. Also the 'relatively new' (or as new can be in today's world) VIA KT600 chipset is pretty schmiko too, most with onboard sound, nic, sata and ect. A dual mem controller means little unless your gonna get two sticks of memory. So just for the sake of it, check out the prices of a 2600 and a good motherboard for overclocking (i think ASUS A7n8x was a fav, but gigabyte kt600IEEE one is good too, and no onboard vid so you can chuck a vid card in, an if $$ is no thing, then pay 30 more and get epox which i hear is the bee's knees of the kt600 boards) oh, and yes - umart, cheapest in almost everything and very good service (thou i'm sure some of you have had bad experiences) |

ill have a look at umart, its just computer alliance had that thing on the site where u select the parts and it adds it up for you but then if i said GAMEDUDE you would probably all rape me and turn this into a tech shop war/gamedude flame thread :P |

most problems will only occur if you run heaps of devices off the power supply and say the monitor as well Monitor sockets on the back of a power supply are pass through. I second the recommendation of a quality power supply for a powerful PC like the one you are going to get. Antec and Enermax are high quality brands. |

A P4 2.8 is nowhere near a duron system I would third a decent PSU, especially as a p4 system would be a lot more exxy than an AMD system to replace if the PSU decided to eat it all :) |

300W is enough. i ran a yumcha 300w power supply that had
a 300w antec should be fine. because there's 300w, then there's 300w antec/enermax |

Same as others have suggested , get a good PSU. I recently bought an Enermax 550w jobbie to supply heaps of juice for the 9800XT and my god its rock solid, you could power a small town with it. $$ but very much worth it. Antec tru blue 480w are cheaper and reportedly also excellent psu's.

heh, 550W is sufficient to run a high-powered 12V compressor (ala Vapochill) as well as a fully kitted out PC :P
A quality 300W should be enough, otherwise 350W or 400W would provide a bit of headroom. |

Why spend more when those are perfectly good mobos?
I don't subscribe myself to the philosophy of spend spend spend. I subscribe myself to the philosophy of spending only as much as little as possible as long as what I buy meets my requirements. Those motherboards will do absolutely everything that guy needs. PS I hate asus (Quality that is overpriced) Gigabyte Quality and Performance that is well priced. |
