The world's number one vapourware title (perhaps better known as "when-it's-done ware") gets bumped back even further...
No Duke Nukem Forever 'til 2005?

When 3D Realms decided on the title "Duke Nukem Forever," most gamers probably didn't realize they were actually describing its development time. First announced in 1997, the seven-year-old shooter franchise's next installment may now not be released until 2005.

This is pretty sad news; despite not being interested in the original Duke Nukem I've been really looking forward to this, as I've always thought it was going to be one of the few FPS games to really push the genre to new places. I've always been telling people that this is definitely one game to keep an eye out for.

Now though, the screenshots (while still impressive) are starting to look a little dated. So many other games have come out since they started working on it, you have to wonder how many new tricks they're going to be able to pull that haven't been covered already.

I guess the other thing is just how many people are actually going to even remember Duke Nukem by the time it comes out? I wonder what percentage of gamers that played the original Duke Nukem will still be avid game players 10 years (or whatever) later and will be lining up to get this game? How many of the new generation will be interested?

Don't worry trog, I'll tell my grandkids about the original, so they can tell their children when Duke Nukem Forever is released.

It says somewhere in that GameSpot article that 3dgamers are funding the development entirely themselves.

What the hell are they even doing with all this development time? They aren't even making their own engine so really, what are they spending all the time on?

first of all - there's a f***ing surprise!

second - first they were using the quake 2 engine, then they decided to use the unreal engine. no idea whatsoever if they plan on upgrading from that antiquated engine or not

Maybe they have made their own engine. Infact ten bucks says they have switched engines again, Doom, or HL2, or upgraded Unreal maybe. It just does not take this amount of time to finish PC FPS game. Unles they are bringing drastic new stuff to the table.

I feel sorry for them though, it could be the best game ever and that would still not live up to the expectations people have set for the game. Seriously, unless it takes the dog for a walk, washes the dishes and cures cancer, what could it bring that will satisfy peoples hunger that has built up for this game?

I would love to be a fly on the wall of their offices. Just to find out exactly why it has been taking so long.

Broussard has also been outspoken about his displeasure with Take Two's public announcements about the game. Most famously, he responded to Lapin's May statement with a post on Shacknews.com saying, "Take Two needs to STFU IMO."

heh :)

Sounds like one of the biggest causes of the delay has been corporate/finacial woes. I do hope they get this game done, even if the graphics are out-dated by the time they are finished it will still be a lot of fun.

I just watched the video of the game that was shown at E3 (on the Quake 2 engine) and it looked like a pretty complete game, and it looked like it would have been a lot of fun. Instead of switching engines I dont understand why they didn't just release that game, then start a whole new game on the Unreal engine, then they'd at least be making some money in between.

Duke Nukem will still get market share through T&A and foul language.

I thought I heard someone comment that the reason they chose the Unreal engine, was because of how easy it is to port to each new version of the engine as it comes out.. or something to that effect...

There was an article out earlier this year talking about how the staff turn over is massive at 3drealms, something like average time spent there is 6-7 months. And considering the game is now 7 years into its development that means they've gone through 10+ complete effective staff replacements.

Either there is no development happening at all, or the director has no clue, or both. Feature creep could not explain 7+ years of development.

Even an engine change wouldn't have added more than a year i doubt.

Man, I remeber watching the E3 video with the Unreal engine, it looks so compeleted it wasn't funny, this is going beyond a joke.

But yeah if they move to the Soruce engine it's going to look pretty smick :)

Hahaha I love it.

Obviously, 3D realms arent working on a game, games dont take that long silly.

My guess is that they're building a rocket ship to travel to the moon.

Maybe they'll pay the Evil Dead creators some royalties this time.

Must be difficult to find some original dialogue.

Those saying the video looked compelete. That really has nothing to do with it. There not going to show a video that looks half assed. They would have laboured for hours and hours to make that video look as schmick as they possibly can.

I used to have lan games of duke nukem with mates coz they all had s*** computers & couldn't run quake (yes that's right QUAKE). We also used to play shadow warrior, it was way better than duke nukem. They should remake that game.

The thing that made Daikatana truly the most suck game ever, wasn't the long development cycle, it wasn't the fact that John Romero said that he was going to make every gamer his bitch and then proceed to hype the living s*** out of it a billion years before release, it wasn't the fact that John Romero said that 'design is king', it wasn't the fact that Ion Storm hemeraged money like it was going out of style, it wasn't the fact that they had half a dozen development teams, each team had totaly different members in them when they all got fired as when that entire team got hired, it wasn't that they so poorly designed the product, or poorly engineered it, it wasn't that they badly marketed it, or even that made a s***ty game that made diakatana that bad ...

It was because all of that happened (and more).

With the exception of the long development time, Duke Nukem 3D doesn't seem to releate to anything else. So I don't know it can scream anything to you ... unless you have some sort of mental condition, which isn't publicly known, where stupid things just scream at you for no real apparent reason.

What a joke. 3D realms are fast becoming the industry jerk offs.

I said it before and I'll say it again...they should have released what they had done on the Unreal engine they had tweaked and then moved on. Talk about feature creep.

By the time they release it, it will still be old tech compared to the vid cards that will be around at that point in time. sheesh.

Daikatana > Duke Nukem : Forever Delayed

Me and Dan played it coop for atleast an hour once, and it was PROBABLY not the worst gaming experience.

The patching system was more annoying than the giant flys. And we spent atleast 15 minutes trying to get passed a retarded map bug. Yeah that kinda makes the game gay, but the fact we continued to jump and circle jump to our deaths for 15 minutes shows that it wasn't as hideously repugnant as most people would have you believe.

Crap game, crap programming, yes. But worst game ever, not a chance.
