Well, we all knew it was coming, it just took its sweet time. Shacknews posted the following moments ago:
The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific "in-store" date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date.

Here is the story. promoted (and slightly edited) forum item

They must have known for quite some time it was going to be delayed, why didn't they tell people sooner!

cause the techies told the managers yonks ago that no way in hell could they make that date, but the managers didn't believe 'em, and told the marketing guys it was a-okay. Then the poor techies worked their asses off, slept under their desks for weeks... and lo and behold! they didn't make it. So the managers run around telling the marketing guys how the techies have screwed up, when in reality it's poor management advertising unreasonable delivery dates...

oh wait... that sounds like my day.

EASTER!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

{pimped from another forum}
On Sept 24th a sound could be heard.
Listen closely to the wail of the nerd.
For Half-Life 2 will no longer appear.
The most horrible fate a gamer could fear.

BUT HALO FOR THE PC IS STILL COMING OUT.. IT WILL ROOOOOL.... :(

spose it was bound to happen, once id pushed back doom3, it gave valve a bit less pressure to actually get the game out...They've got a bit of breathing time now, plus they're prolly gonna fix steam up a bit

so much for the suspense

Does this effect the release of those new Radeon XTs that are supposed to be bundled with HL2?

I think and am hoping that the 'holidays' they are referring to is the Thanksgiving Holiday they have in November. You have to remember in the US they consider a long weekend 'holidays'

fingers crossed...still I suppose it give ATI and Nvidia time to get new hardware and newer drivers out the door.

But poo, I was so looking forward to playing this in October.

I'm not wallowing, I'm skipping. Skipping in despair... la la la la la sob sob la la la ...

Didn't really expect it to be out at the end of september anyway. And I'd much rather get a game that doesn't need a 150MB patch within the first two weeks of release - especially if the only way to get said patch is via friggin Steam... >:(

I heard the reason for the delay was that Valve considered the game too cutting edge, which might frighten a lot of the HL players, so they are holding it back for around about 5 years.

People still play HL? Lots of mods for it, but I doubt they would hold it for such a small userbase, as those who still dabble in it's DM.

cos they can do what ever the hell they want, usually when they delay a game its for a good reason some times just to perfect the game before it goes out... much like what blizzard did with war 3 how many delays happend there but the end product was exceptional

Usually a company isn't arrogant (or stupid enough) to point at a set date months in advance and say "we'll be done THEN".

It must put heinous pressure on the development team. Not to mention the local hospitality industry - the longer that game is delayed, the more of a workout Gabe Newell is giving local fast food outlets with all that ATI cash.

Sooo Team Fortess 2 in 2004 anyone? Has it reached the half decade late stage yet? It's knocked off Daikatana and Duke Nukem Forever as most vaporous game, ever.

Yes, has anyone heard about ATI's reaction to this? Whats going on with the new Radeons?

ALSO is getting a new RADEON 9800PRO 128 for $368 a good deal?

I'd rather wait longer for a game thats finished.

It's not like you dont automatically add a month or 4 to all release dates anyway.

Saw this comment over at VE;

Does anyone remember way back when Half-Life 2 was first announced? I remember them saying there'd be a small bit of Zen in the game. Then, the other day, I read an interview with Doug Lombardi in PC Zone UK, and he said that there was no Zen in the game... Could this be part of the reason for the delay?

Maybe they did have to pull a chunk out of the game late in the dev and it is the reason for the release slipping? All I know is that a three line email saying its been released is a bit piss poor to the fans, he (Lombardi) could have at least given some inkling of the reasons.

Punctuation - your friend and ours!

We've already raved about Stalker because it does indeed look awesome, as does Far Cry, Chrome and a couple other titles. The difference is Stalker wasn't slated for a Sept 30 release...

Has this still not been confirmed... jeez. I cant imagine that it is true if valve wont even confirm it.

Odd of them not to deny it either. Guess they are just riding it to create more suspense or maybe they are scared mobs of angry nerds will attack because they didnt get the game shipped in time.

Good call Tepid, he's really F'ing annoying. BTW stalker looks s***, if you wanna see a decent game other than HL2 and Doom III then take a look at Far Cry, now thats cool. Yay for Valve.... well no not really, gay bastards delayed HL2.... i sense some sort of pattern between valve and blizzard. Maybe it's the fact they're the leading businesses for an entire genre/style of pc gaming!

Is there a solid date for the release for HL2 from what i have heard i think not that is why valve gets the thumbs down from me first delaying the game which i can understand but by then not giving a solid date for its return is really annoying
