Topic: setting up shared internet...

Hi guys.

I have to set up shared internet access from our one USB ASDL modem which will be on a server and will share out internet to about 12 people. I was wondering what program I should use to do this to only allow those people to access the internet as they have paid for it, and not the other people on the larger network.

I do not want to use ICS. Any good programs or ideas you could recommend?

Thanks in advance, Mike

enough said

there's a difference between port mapping and routing programs

port mapping = much f***ing around and lots of s*** still doesn't work

routing = click a few things and leave it

thanks guys, just realised i got a router here and installed that but I still can't access the net.

I changed the routers IP to 192.168.2.1 (so it wouldnt conflict with the 192.168.1.1 router already on our network) and so in my tcp/ip properties i set:

ip: 192.168.2.2
sub: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.2.1

and DNSs as the info sheet said.

however it still wont access the net.

the light for power, lan and dsl are full on the router. no flashing so i assume the cables are all properly done..

any help would be great, thanks...

does the cable between the router and switch have to be a crossover cable?

it's usually straight. the only time you use crossover is for PC to PC direct connections (AFAIK)

edit: i think another place is connecting switches to switches when there isn't an uplink port. so in that case you may need crossover. just try pinging around the network and check that everything is actually connected before you rip your hair out

however, if either the router or switch is auto-sensing, you can use straight or crossover.

i use ics fine here, don't know why you don't want to use it (didn't read whole thread either)

my friend uses sygate, also works fine

as for connecting to the router, try making the client's DNS the 192.168.2.1 address, or if that doesn't work, try giving the router it a 192.168.0.x IP instead; something may have gayed up with the subnets (which i know nothing about)

beats the f*** out of me mr pedantic. You could easly put in a PCI card to give USB functionality. I am just trying to say, get a old computer, and use that if you dont have a hardware router.

If you have Cizzah $$ Just get a Netcomm NB1300 ($169) and plug it into a switch/ Hub. Or get a Dlink DSL504 for $292.

The idea of the low end PC with Linux is a good one if you are on a budget I have a few lying around. Might set one up and use it with my USB modem...
