I am sick of optus's 3gig cap. Thinking of changing to ADSL.
Im gonna wait around till August to see the new plans that WirlPool is going on about.

No Limits 256/64 kbps Unlimited Mb $68.95

My question is, how slow is 256/64? Is it unbarable?(sp)

For those who are interested in the plans...

Yes, but if you take a closer look, there is a cap with the 512/128 speeds. No cap with 256/64. Why would they give you 512 for an extra $1 =)

Would you still get your 13k/s through IRC?

I read that it's actually better to divide the Kbps by 9 to get more realistic value for KB/s...

Im on 256 adsl atm. I get 50kb/s off gamearena etc (60kb/s max). Off kazaa it also gets up to 60. Downloading p2p, uno like the usual 15 or so (obviously depending on the cap of the uploader).

Edit: ^^ Yeah, I forgot I upgraded from 256 the other month.

as if u do get 60kb/s on a 256 plan. In that case i get 280kb/s on my 512 plan... dude you will get about 27kb/s max on the 256 plan due to all the PPP overheads. 512 plan you will pull 52-57k max. kthnxby

Ping times are also noticeably better on 512kb...

sorry the link didn't work for me..

but i thought i'd explain something

adsl users (who are used to being capped at 256/64 and 512/128) will tell you that pings on 256 and 512 are exactly the same..

this is true outside a game.. but when you start playing there will be a noticeable difference.. mainly because of the asynchronous nature of their Adsl connection. (i'm not going to explain the whole thing..)

but if this is cable at those speeds then you shouldn't notice that much of a difference.. unless the game requires more upstream than you can provide.. (quite possible in the case of the 256/64 plans) in which case you might find that it won't be adequate in-game.

ADSL is asynchonous? Or did you mean asymmetric?
