Topic: What sort of gear is good for lanning?

I've just been put in charge of organising lans for my UQ student society, and I'm wondering what sort of gear we'd need to buy/hire for a lan of about 40-50 computers. I'm sure many of you know more than me about what is needed, and also where the best places to get this stuff are.
Obviously I realise we need switches, but what sort are good, what sort of config is best between switches etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated

the best thing to do is to borrow them from someone else. the major lans around brisbane should be happy to donate switches and stuff. Either that or talk to your uni. im sure that they will haev a spare 50 port 100 base switch lieing around. just use one of those

Personally, you can't go past a bit of New Guinian Gold. But its all personal preference i guess.

The best part about this thread: the part where it went off topic and got funny

Okay

Make sure your venue has 3 phase power, I think this is a must, then get a dizzy board, which is basicly 3 -phase to a heap of standard GPOs

You wont blow power that way.

Then ask local lans around the place, like nudgee, ggf , even qgl, if they can lend you a couple of switches.

Then get a couple of boxes of cat 5 a few crinpers and get some mates, a slap of beer and some cable making happening and a lot of powerboards and extension leads.

Again, ask local lans around the place, they might supplie you with all this.

I think he's asking what brands are good, like will netgear give lower pings & faster pr0n leeching than D-Link?
